        Critical theory and feeling

The affective politics of the early Frankfurt School

        by Simon Mussell

This book offers a unique and timely reading of the early Frankfurt School in response to the recent 'affective turn' within the arts and humanities. Resisting the overly rationalist tendencies of political philosophy, it argues that critical theory actively cultivates a powerful connection between thinking and feeling, and rediscovers a range of often neglected concepts that were of vital importance to the first generation of critical theorists, including melancholia, hope, (un)happiness, objects and mimesis. In doing so, it brings the dynamic work of Walter Benjamin, Theodor Adorno, Ernst Bloch and Siegfried Kracauer into conversation with more recent debates around politics and affect. An important intervention in the fields of affect studies and social and political thought, Critical theory and feeling shows that sensuous experience is at the heart of the Frankfurt School's affective politics.

        Saturn und Melancholie

Studien zur Geschichte der Naturphilosophie und Medizin, der Religion und der Kunst

by Raymond Klibansky, Erwin Panofsky, Fritz Saxl, Christa Buschendorf

        by Karl Dedecius

        Art history

A critical introduction to its methods

        by Michael Hatt, Charlotte Klonk

        Art History: A critical introduction to its methods provides a lively and stimulating introduction to methodological debates within art history. Offering a lucid account of approaches from Hegel to post-colonialism, the book provides a sense of art history's own history as a discipline from its emergence in the late-eighteenth century to contemporary debates. By explaining the underlying philosophical and political assumptions behind each method, along with clear examples of how these are brought to bear on visual and historical analysis, the authors show that an adherence to a certain method is, in effect, a commitment to a set of beliefs and values. The book makes a strong case for the vitality of the discipline and its methodological centrality to new fields such as visual culture. This book will be of enormous value to undergraduate and graduate students, and also makes its own contributions to ongoing scholarly debates about theory and method. ;

The ethics of researching the far right

        Critical approaches and reflections

by Antonia Vaughan, Joan Braune, Meghan Tinsley, Aurelien Mondon

At a time when far, radical, and extreme-right politics are becoming increasingly mainstream globally - sometimes with deadly consequences - research in these fields is essential to understand the most effective ways to combat these dangerous ideologies. Yet engaging with texts and movements that do physical and verbal violence raises a number of urgent ethical issues. Until recently, this has remained understudied, as scholarship on the far right rarely delves explicitly and critically into the ethics of research. This book seeks to remedy this significant gap in an otherwise extensive and growing literature. Originating from a workshop series in 2020, in which an international group of academics at various career stages shared the ethical challenges and best practices they had developed in their research, this edited collection draws together insights from these ongoing conversations, offering urgent critical reflections on key ethical issues.

        In the Permanent Collection

        by Stefanie Wortman

Trying to make sense of a disordered world, Stefanie Wortman's debut collection examines works of art as varied as casts of antique sculpture, 19th-century novels, and even scenes from reality television to investigate the versions of order that they offer. These deft poems yield moments of surprising levity even as they mount a sharp critique of human folly.  "These poems seem haunted by a mostly nameless melancholia. In The Permanent Collection, however, turns its grim geography of prisons, mortuaries, and tawdry suburbs into something close to classical elegy. 'In sunken rooms,' Wortman writes, 'on scratchy rugs, maybe we’ve never known happiness.' It’s that 'maybe'—the smart hedge—that renders her poems complex, often beguiling, but never without a gesture of redemption. This should be part of any serious poet’s permanent collection."— Chad Davidson, author of The Last Predicta and judge

        Natural Antidepressants

Gentle remedies to help you beat the blues

by Dr. med. Eberhard J. Wormer

The term "melancholia” goes back to ancient times and is used to describe an emotional state characterized by dark moods and gloom which inspired poets and philosophers to gloomy self-reflections. The clinical picture today is referred to as "depression”, and there seems to be a worldwide trend: Besides an alarming rise in depression related to various social factors, the consequential costs are also rising drastically – owing to unemployment, hospital treatment and early retirement, for example. Unfortunately, the health and quality of life of those affected are often carelessly jeopardized because strong psychiatric medicines are hastily prescribed. However, where undiagnosed deficiencies are what causes these mental ailments, chemical antidepressants usually do not have an effect, and their side effects add to the suffering of a patient already struggling with their depression. This compact guide explains both the symptom "depressive disorder" and the psychological illness "depression”, its focus is above all on numerous non-pharmacological antidepressants which are tolerated well, and on alternative therapeutic approaches: -symptoms, diagnoses and causes of depression -opportunities and risks of a pharmacological treatment -the body’s own antidepressants and those derived from plants -useful nutrients and measures to fight depression

      • Shadows & Light, The Life of James McBey

        by Alasdair Soussi

Creative genius, war artist, adventurer, lover. These are just some of the words that can be used to describe Aberdeenshire-born painter and printmaker James McBey (1883– 1959). This illegitimate son of a blacksmiths’ daughter was the acknowledged heir to Whistler and Rembrandt. But after his death in 1959, his renown as one of Britain’s most accomplished artists faded. At the heart of this biography is his time as a war artist in the Middle East during the Great War, his love affairs, marriage to a beautiful American and his enduring passion for Morocco. This biography reinstates a great 20th century artist whose respectful focus brought the Arab world into the British consciousness.
