        Other things

        by Yurko Izdryk

Yurko Izdryk’s poetry has an extraordinary optical effect as if he talks to you eye to eye reaching deep into your soul. The poems touch on such a level that you can find yourself inside them, and after all, inside the poet’s or lyrical hero’s life, living it as your own because it is so real. This personal touch is known in Ukraine as the phenomenon of Izdryk. Regardless of the phenomenon’s variating tonality – sometimes softly lyrical or harshly ironic, it remains native, yours, reflected by you. In addition to poems, there are also poet’s collages, “other things” that appear in words and pictures, thereby creating the body of one single object - the book as an artifact of life.

        The Same Thing Ever

        by Taras Prokhasko

Taras Prokhasko's book attempts to explain, above all to himself, what is going on beyond oneself. It is a kind of para-essays and para-journalism. Whereas there are few topics that would really interest the author, since one has to repeat the things that seem important in many ways and on the daily basis, the title is "Odnoi I Toi Samoi", i.e. – The Same Thing Ever..."This book was in the long list of the BBC Ukraine Book of the Year 2013 Award.

        Pines of Silvicultural Importance

by Edited by The Forestry Compendium, CABI

The genus Pinus is of great ecological and commercial importance and it is notable for its vast geographic range and the sheer area that its various species occupy. Its natural range is almost exclusively in the northern hemisphere, where it often forms the dominant vegetation cover. However, it is also of silvicultural significance in many countries in the southern hemisphere.Pines play an important role in the ecosystems of which they form part, and provide a valuable source of fibre, timber and other secondary products for human use. Worldwide, pines form a large part of the annual wood harvest and the immature plantation forests of the future. This reflects their amenability to cultivation, their broad site tolerances, and the ease of processing their wood for a multitude of end-uses.This book is compiled from 65 datasheets on pine from the Forestry Compendium Global Module (published by CABI on CD-ROM). For each species, there is information on common names, taxonomy, botanical features, natural distribution, latitude range, climate, soil properties, silvicultural characteristics, pests, wood and non-wood products.

The Ideal Landscapes: The Meaning of Feng-shui

        by YU Kongjian

It is a valuable work written by YU Kongjian on landscape design and the meaning of Feng-shui. It analyzes the structural characteristics of Feng-shui and landscape patterns, as well as the profound relationship between the two notions. The book follows the experience of human evolution and cultural ecology and provides abundant field research material, revealing the common patterns between an ideal Feng-shui design, other ideal landscape designs in Chinese culture, as well as ideal landscape design in the psychology and statistic sense. The work demonstrates China’s Feng-shui theory with cultural, geographical, biological and philosophical significance. The author, with amply practical experience in urban design and landscape design, reveals the cultural significance of Feng-shui with respect and understanding towards culture, belief, local development, as well as an objective attitude towards this theory.

        Style and Meaning

Studies in the Detailed Analysis of Film

        by Susan Williams

The first edition of New challenges for documentary provided a major stimulus for teaching about documentary film and television and fresh encouragement for critical thinking about practice. This second edition brings together many new contributions both from academics and filmmakers, reflecting shifts both in documentary production itself, and in ways of discussing it. Once again, the emphasis has been on clear and provocative writing, sympathetic to the practical challenges of documentary film-making but making connections with a range of work in media and communications analysis. With its wide range of contributors and the international scope of its agenda, New challenges for documentary will be essential reading for general filmmakers and documentary students both of academic and practical inclinations.

        The matter of art

        Materials, practices, cultural logics, c.1250–1750

by Edited by Christy Anderson, Anne Dunlop and Pamela H. Smith

Materials carried the meaning of early modern art. Transformed and crafted from the matter of nature, art objects were the physical embodiment of both the inherent qualities of materials and the forces of culture that used, refined and produced them. The study of materials offers a new approach to this important period in the history of art, science and culture, linking the close study of painting, sculpture and architecture to much wider categories of the everyday and the exotic. Drawing on new research and models from anthropology, material culture and the history of art, scholars in The matter of art explore topics as diverse as Inka stonework, gold in panel painting, cork platforms for shoes, and the Christian Eucharist.

        Moment Précieux

        by Prof. Haïm Granot
