This book comprehensively reviews current pest management practices and explores novel integrated pest management strategies in Brassica oilseed crops. It is essential reading for pest management practitioners and researchers working on pest management in canola and other Brassica crops worldwide. Canola, mustard, camelina and crambe are the most important oilseed crops in the world. Canola is the second largest oilseed crop in the world providing 13% of the world's supply. Seeds of these species commonly contain 40% or more oil and produce meals with 35 to 40% protein. However, its production has declined significantly in recent years due to insect pest problems. The canola pest complexes are responsible for high insecticide applications on canola. Many growers rely on calendar-based spraying schedules for insecticide applications. The diamondback moth Plutella xylostella and flea beetles Phyllotreta spp. (P. cruciferae and P. striolata)cause serious damage to canola. In the Northern Great Plains, USA, for instance, P. xylostella is now recorded everywhere that canola is grown. Severe damage to canola plants can be caused by overwintering populations of flea beetles feeding on newly emerged seedlings. Cabbage seed pod weevil (Ceutorhynchus obstrictus), swede midge (Contarinia nasturtii), and tarnished plant bug (Lygus lineolaris) are also severe pests on canola. Minor pests include aphids (cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae and turnip aphid, Hyadaphis erysimi) and grasshopper, Melanoplus sanguinipes. This book: · is the only single compiled source of information on integrated management of canola and other Brassica oilseed pests · presents the biology and management of all the major and minor pests of Brassica oilseed crops · is an essential source of information for applied entomologists, crop protection researchers, extension agents and stakeholders ; This book reviews current pest management practices and explores new biological and chemical control methods, and integrated pest management strategies in this important crop. Natural Antimicrobials in Food Safety and Quality

by Wolf-Rainer Abraham, Maria do Carmo de Freire Bastos, Nicoletta Belletti, Patrick J Cullen, Isabel M P L V O Ferreira, Mendel Friedman, Antonio Gálvez, Pilar García Suárez, Gustavo Gonzàlez, Riadh Hammami, El Akrem Hayouni, Vijay K Juneja, Khaoula Khwaldia, Ching-Hsing Liao, Marta Mari, Faid Mohamed, Caterina Morcia, Victor O Oyetayo, Mehdi Razzaghi-Abyaneh, Claudia Ruiz-Capillas, Yuanxia Sun, Ljubisa Topisirovic. Edited by Mahendra Rai, Michael Chikindas.

The demands of producing high quality, pathogen-free food rely increasingly on natural sources of antimicrobials to inhibit food spoilage organisms, foodborne pathogens and toxins. Discovery and development of new antimicrobials from natural sources for a wide range of applications requires that knowledge of traditional sources for food antimicrobials is combined with the latest technologies in identification, characterization and application. This book explores some novel, natural sources of antimicrobials as well as the latest developments in using well-known antimicrobials in food. Covering antimicrobials derived from microbial sources (bacteriophages, bacteria, algae, fungi), animal-derived products (milk proteins, chitosan, reduction of biogenic amines), plants and plant-products (essential oils, phytochemicals, bioactive compounds), this book includes the development and use of natural antimicrobials for processed and fresh food products. New and emerging technologies concerning antimicrobials are also discussed.

Natural Products in Plant Pest Management

by Nawal Kishore Dubey, Santos Mila, Sanath Hettiarachi, R N Kharwar, Moshe Kostyukovsky, Sonia Marín, D B Olufolaji, Roman Pavela, Maria Porras, J C Pretorius, Larisa Sheherbakova, K A Raveesha, H N Verma. Edited by Nawal Kishore Dubey.

Overzealous and indiscriminate use of many synthetic pesticides during recent decades in the control of plant pests has resulted in a number of environmental and toxicological problems. Reducing the release of synthetic chemicals into the environment requires that alternative sources of chemicals are developed that can be used safely in the management of plant pests. Botanical antimicrobials derived from plants are currently recognised as biodegradable, systemic, eco-friendly and non-toxic to mammals and are thus considered safe. Their modes of action against pests are diverse. Natural compounds are well suited to organic food production in industrialised countries and can play greater roles in the protection of food crops in developing countries Some plant based antimicrobials (e.g. neem products, pyrethoids and essential oils) are already used to manage pest populations on a large scale. Plant scientists and agriculturists now devote significant attention to discovery and further development and formulation of novel plant products with antimicrobial activity. This book is the first to bring together relevant aspects of the basic and applied sciences of natural pesticides and discussed modern trends in the use of natural products in pest management.

Ogham and The Wood Wide Web

        by Wendy Trevennor

Like the Norse runes, the ogham is a system designed to help practitioners learn and remember them and their meanings. Where the Norse runes had the three Rune Poems, each version with a verse for each stave, ogham is set out in three ancient Briartharogams, word-lists, which are reproduced at the end of this book. These lists contain many kennings, little puns to add meaning, which often confuse rather than enlighten.

        Olive Oil and Health

by Edited by Jose L Quiles, Carmen Ramirez-Tortosa, Parveen Yaqoob

Nutritional aspects of dietary fats, in general, and of olive oil in particular, are of great interest in many nutrition-related pathologies in which they are implicated. Olive oil plays an important role in the reduction of blood cholesterol levels, hence reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke. It is a good source of antioxidants in the form of polyphenols and vitamin E and there is also emerging evidence that olive oil has a role in reducing the incidence of certain types of cancer. This book discusses and summarizes current research and knowledge on olive oil.
