        Ticks and Tick-borne Diseases

Geographical Distribution and Control Strategies in the Euro-Asia Region

by Edited by Mo Salman, Jordi Tarrés-Call.

The continuing emergence and evolution of tick-borne diseases has significant implications for animal and human health, and the profitability of food animal production. These problems are enhanced by the spread of ticks to new regions, and many tick-borne diseases having zoonotic capability. This book is an expansion of the EFSA report on the subject, and details the significance of tick-borne diseases, identification of tick species, emerging tick-borne infections, factors influencing the spread and distribution of ticks and surveillance and control measures.

Practical Control of Mosquitoes as Disease Vectors

by Jacques Derek Charlwood, Carla A Sousa, Perran Ross, Marta Maia, Gabriel Carrasco-Escobar, Amir Galili, Lucy Tusting, Annold Mbando, Kevin Kobylinski, Carlos Chaccour, Jan E. Conn, Manuela Herrera-Varela, Robert T. Jones, Emmanuel Kaindoa, Kimberly Fornace, Edgar Manrique, Louisa A. Messenger, Meir Morag, Marta Moreno, Fredros Okumu, Joao Pinto

Disease vector control is rapidly changing, both because of the emergence of resistance to conventional methods and the development of new and potentially game-changing techniques. This book reviews several current and future measures for controlling mosquito vectors of disease, with an emphasis on malaria vectors. Beginning with an introduction to the topic of mosquito ecology and sampling methods, the book then covers several vector-borne disease control methods. The emphasis in many of these methods is for the sufferers of the diseases to take charge of their monitoring and control. Tackling the problems facing mosquito control, the authors review the important issues of education, economic considerations and climate change before concluding with a consideration of the politics and practicalities of method choice and implementation. This book is a thought-provoking concise and practical resource for anyone interested in primary healthcare and tackling or studying mosquito disease vectors.

Infectious and Parasitic Diseases of Livestock (2 volume set)

        by P Lefèvre, J Blancou, R Chermette, G Uilenberg

Translated from the French original published by Lavoisier In this new English language edition all the chapters have been updated with new references and additional chapters written by authors in the UK, USA, Australia and Canada. In recent years infectious livestock diseases have swept across many countries, often with dramatic consequences for animal and public health. With climatic changes modifying the distribution of vector-borne diseases, emerging novel pathogens can spread rapidly in new areas, at the same time as resistance spreads in places where they are established. This calls for new approaches for the control of parasitic diseases. This book presents in detail over 130 viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic diseases of large livestock species from all over the world, accompanied by very valuable and informative illustrations and photographs. Particular attention is also paid to the role of wildlife in their epidemiology, stressing the potential zoonotic characteristics of diseases where applicable and their effects on humans. Handbook of Diseases of Banana, Abacá and Enset

        by David R Jones

This book provides a comprehensive guide to the large number of diseases, disorders and injuries that can cause severe economic losses to banana, abacá and enset crops, and the fungi, bacteria, phytoplasmas, viruses, nematodes and abiotic factors involved. The monoculture of certain banana cultivars in large plantations make the crop particularly susceptible to catastrophic losses from disease and smallholders can also experience major problems. New approaches to breeding, crop management and handling are being developed to meet challenges posed by emerging threats. Handbook of Diseases of Banana, Abacá and Enset both describes and illustrates diseases and is printed in full colour throughout, creating a valuable diagnostic tool. It covers: - The origin and classification of banana, the safe movement of Musa germplasm and banana breeding for disease resistance. - Recent areas of growing research on the most important diseases of banana, such as black leaf streak, Fusarium wilt, Xanthomonas bacterial wilt and bunchy top. - Significant advances relating to pathogens causing less serious and widespread diseases. Authored by an international team of experts, this is an essential reference for all 'banana doctors' around the world. It serves as a useful field and laboratory guide, as well as a source of information for all those investigating diseases of banana, abacá and enset crops.

        Ganoderma Diseases of Perennial Crops

by Edited by Julie Flood, Paul Dennis Bridge, Mark Holderness

Diseases caused by Ganoderma species cause major losses of palms and other perennial crops throughout the world, and these are particularly significant in Asia. Successive replanting of crop monocultures can be rapidly exploited by soil borne fungi such as Ganoderma, and the problem will become more serious in the 21st century, as more areas become due for second or even third replanting. Environmental considerations will reduce exploitation of new forest areas, making further replanting of these crops inevitable. Thus, appropriate, integrated management systems for these diseases are vital. However, the development of such control measures has been hampered in the past by a limited knowledge of the nature and inter-relationships of populations of different hosts and the mechanisms of disease establishment and spread. This book aims to address these limitations through enhanced knowledge of the biology and taxonomy of Ganoderma species. The use of molecular and biochemical methods can be used to provide a greater understanding of the spread of the pathogen, and consequently, the improved management of disease.

Earth Observation, Public Health and One Health

        Activities, Challenges and Opportunities

by Stéphanie Brazeau, Nicholas H. Ogden

This book focuses on the potential for Earth Observation (EO) to contribute to public health practice. Remote sensing experts from the EO community together with epidemiologists, modelling experts, policy makers, managers and public health researchers gathered at the One Earth-One Health workshop held at the Canadian Earth Observation Summit in Montreal in 2017. They shared how EO is being used to understand, track, predict, and manage infectious diseases and discussed the challenges and significant potential of using and developing EO data for public health purposes. The information provided by the workshop participants and members of the international community, has been compiled and substantially updated to reach EO community members and public health professionals interested in developing and applying EO and other geospatial applications in the risk assessment and management of public health issues. Major foci are mosquito-borne diseases, tick-borne diseases, air quality and heat, water-borne diseases, vulnerable populations and pandemics (including COVID-19).
