        Because of the long-standing Canada-U.S. lumber trade dispute and the current pressure on the world's forests as a renewable energy source, much attention has been directed toward the modelling of international trade in wood products. Two types of trade models are described in this book: one is rooted in economic theory and mathematical programming, and the other consists of two econometric/statistical models--a gravity model rooted in theory and an approach known as GVAR that relies on time series analyses. The purpose of the book is to provide the background theory behind models and facilitate readers in easily constructing their own models to analyse policy questions that they wish to address, whether in forestry or some other sector. Examples in the book are meant to illustrate how models can be used to say something about a variety of issues, including identification of the gains and losses to various players in the North American softwood lumber business, and the potential for redirecting sales of lumber to countries outside the United States. The discussion is expanded to include other products besides lumber, and used to examine, for example, the effects of log export restrictions by one nation on all other forestry jurisdictions, the impacts of climate policies as they relate to the global forest sector, and the impact of oil prices on forest product markets throughout the world. This book will appeal to practising economists and researchers who wish to examine various policies that affect international trade, whether their interest is local or international in scope.         Commodity futures prices exploded in 2007-08 and concerns about a new type of participant in commodity futures markets began to emerge. Market participants, regulators, and civic organizations began raising concerns that inflows from new "commodity index" investments were driving the increases in commodity prices instead of economic fundamentals. The main argument was that unprecedented buying pressure from these speculative long-only futures traders created massive bubbles that resulted in prices substantially exceeding fundamental value. At the time, it was not uncommon to link concerns about speculation and high prices to world hunger, food crises, and civil unrest. Naturally, this outcry resulted in numerous regulatory proposals to restrict speculation in commodity futures markets through transaction taxes, speculative position limits, and even the bizarre idea of a "virtual reserve" whereby a public agency would take futures positions opposite speculators. At the core, these assertions raised major economic questions about the efficiency of price discovery in commodity futures markets. Moreover, these so-called remedies did not come without a potential cost. Burdensome regulations would increase compliance and risk sharing costs across the global food system-lowering prices for producers and increasing costs to consumers. To guide this debate, a rigorous approach was needed to understand the dynamics between prices and commodity index activity. This book documents a curated selection of papers on the impact of index investment on commodity futures prices. The chronology of the papers roughly follows the timeline of our involvement in the world-wide debate about commodity speculation as it evolved after 2007. The 10 papers follow the evolving speculation debate with new author forwards highlighting the contribution and impact. Policy-makers, researchers, and market participants will find this not only as useful documentation of the debate; but, also a natural starting point when high commodity prices inevitably create the next speculation backlash.

Information is provided on how to propagate and cultivate about 80 of the most valuable species. Indigenous trees provide numerous resources useful for welfare and development. They include many types of timber and non-timber forest products, such as craft materials, foods and medicines. The proximity of indigenous forest helps to moderate the local climate, making it more suitable for agriculture. Indigenous forests protect springs, therefore safeguarding water supplies more effectively than exotic trees such as pines and eucalyptus. All 450 known indigenous tree species from the forests are included. Both scientific and local names are provided, the latter in 21 languages. Local names facilitate access to knowledge and values traditionally attached to the species, useful when planning pathways of development firmly rooted in local culture. The book will be invaluable for botanists, foresters, rural development workers and members of the general public concerned about contributing to conservation and sustainable development in Uganda. Many of the species grow in neighbouring countries, so the book has relevance there too.

        This is a manuscript that focuses on the survival and inheritance of traditional craftsmen in Hunan. From February 2016 to December 2018, which lasted 3 years, the author searched for 40 folk craftsmen in Hunan, and conducted personal interviews with these craftsmen who insisted on traditional craftsmanship, and recorded the inheritance and adherence to traditions with text and photos. Huxiang craftsman spirit of craftsmanship. The interviewees are roughly divided into two categories, one is with a family history, the longest being up to 9 generations; the other is a lifelong apprenticeship. They are all handmade and do not rely on large-scale machinery and equipment at all. Among the interviewees, 20 have entered the “intangible cultural heritage” list at the national, provincial, municipal, and district levels, and have a certain social reputation and status, such as Long Jitang, a silverware maker in Xiangxi, and a ceramic smelter in Changsha Tongguan. Liu Zhiguang; The remaining 20 are folk traditional craftsmen, pure craft earners scattered in the streets and lanes, such as the incense maker who follows the traditional manufacturing method and the last knifeman in the river. Among them are the elderly, the middle-aged, and those born in the 1980s who are dedicated to traditional craftsmanship. Some of the projects interviewed have developed prosperously, some have few successors, and some are in jeopardy. The manuscript is recorded with a combination of text and pictures. The text is mainly traced from the profound family production background and inheritance of several generations. The family history and inheritance history of the craftsman is described in a literary way. The text is concise and exquisite; the pictures are true and true. Accurately conduct a large number of samples during the crafting process to give readers a sense of appreciation and presence. The manuscript not only truly reflects the current status of Hunan handicraft practitioners, but also a record of traditional handicraft culture. It is a clear evidence of the spiritual inheritance of Hunan craftsmen and the preservation of the beauty of daily life that we once possessed.

        RNA interference (RNAi) has the potential to make major contributions towards sustainable crop production and protection with minimal environmental impacts compared to other technologies.
