        Beyond the BBFC

        Local and regional film censorship in the UK

        by Sian Barber

        This work scrutinises British film censorship from a local perspective. Examining different regions and areas, the work of individual councils and their relations with one another and with the BBFC, it offers a broad historical exploration of the intricacies of film censorship in action. Drawing on local archival material and considering the activities of local government in enforcing Cinematograph legislation, this work considers the significance of film censorship apparatus and processes in shaping and informing responses to and control of film culture in different locations across the twentieth century.

        Secret Records of Huanggang County

        by He Dun

        The novel has portrayed the images of Liu Shengzhi, a grass-roots cadre of Chinese Communist Party with strong faith, and many other people via the fate of the Lius in Huanggang County of Hubei Province over the century since the Republican period. Through the description of these characters and the development of the plot, the novel has dug deep into the cultural customs and historical profundity of Huanggang County, and interpreted the patriotic and cultural reasons for Huanggang County being the hometown of many generals and top scorers of college entrance examination. Liu Shengzhi, Brother Shi, is stubborn and unwavering. He has hardly contacted with Brother Shiyi, the best friend in his teenage days, just because he believes that Shiyi has betrayed him. He regularlyremits money to his wife who is retired and gets no more salaries, but tells nothing to her, so as to keep his faith. In face of the storm, he risks his life to dive into water and open the valve of the reservoir. He is also the first to move without any conditions to make room for the construction of Nanmen Bridge. Besides, the novel has also attentively described many other characters such as Uncle Wang Lang. As a brave soldier who had once carried the explosive package to blow up the city gate, Uncle Wang indignantly blocks the car of some greedy official at the street corner of the cross street during the Spring Festival. All these vividly-depicted characters have fully demonstrated the firm faith and integrity of the revolutionists of the older generation.

        Sunningdale, the Ulster Workers' Council strike and the struggle for democracy in Northern Ireland

        by Edited by David McCann, Cillian McGrattan

        The 'Sunningdale experiment' of 1973-4 witnessed the first attempt to establish peace in Northern Ireland through power-sharing. However, its provisions, particularly the cross-border 'Council of Ireland', proved to be a step too far. The experiment floundered amid ongoing paramilitary-led violence, finally collapsing in May 1974 as a result of the Ulster Workers' Council strike. Drawing on new scholarship from some of the top political historians working on the period, this book presents a series of reflections on how key protagonists struggled with notions of power-sharing and the 'Irish dimension', and how those struggles inhibited a deepening of democracy and the ending of violence for so long.

        An Historical Atlas of Staffordshire

        by A. D. M. Phillips, C. B. Phillips

        Within its ancient boundaries, Staffordshire is a county of diverse and contrasting historic landscapes. World-renowned industrial complexes sit alongside agricultural systems; castles rub shoulders with urban-industrial housing; the cathedral centre of a vast diocese lies close to the birthplace of primitive Methodism; overtly planned landscapes mingle with the uplands of the Moorlands and the heathlands of Cannock Chase. These many and varied landscapes are both products and reflections of a multiplicity of histories, and students of the county have been keen to explore and relate these pasts. However, no systematic attempt has previously been made to express these accounts in spatial form. This book seeks to demonstrate by maps the various histories that contribute to the diversity of Staffordshire. With its succinct discussions and detailed map presentations of these themes, incorporating new thinking and recent research, the atlas provides an innovative and major contribution to the study of the history of Staffordshire. ;

        Lancashire

        by John K. Walton

        If England was 'the first industrial nation', Lancashire was emphatically the first industrial county the first to develop, over a wide area, the combination of steam-powered factory industry and urban sprawl which says 'Industrial Revolution' to most people. It was also one the first fully industrialised areas to experience catastrophic economic decline in the inter-war years. Much has been written about particular aspects of the Lancashire industrial experience, and the social causes and consequences of the changes that took place, but there is not full-length social history of the county as a whole, looking at developments in the long run and comparing and contrasting the patterns of change in the south-eastern textile district, on Merseyside and north of the Ribble. An explanation of Lancashire's unique social history since Elizabethan times is long overdue, and Lancashire a social history, 1558-1939 puts forward a distinctive point of view on the many areas of controversy. How did the 'Industrial Revolution' affect working-class living standards? Why did Lancashire become a stronghold both of Puritan activism and Roman Catholic survival, and what were the long-term consequences of this? Was the 'Industrial Revolution' really funded by the profits of the slave trade? Why was working-class Lancashire in the nineteenth century apparently first Chartist, then Conservative? Was Lancashire the original centre and true home of 'Victorian values', of a culture of thrift, enterprise and self-reliance? This is the first social history of an English county to span the centuries from the sixteenth to the twentieth, looking at all levels of society and analysing politics and the power structures as well as technological innovation and material wealth. More importantly, it studies a particular vital and controversial place and period, and takes account of continuities as well as changes. Aimed at the sixth former and general reader as well as the academic market, it should become essential reading for historians, and historical geographers, sociologists and economists. ;

        The Yellow Earth against the Blue Sky

Baipo Town, known as “the shabby Town”, is inundated with lawsuits, bully, poverty and outdated thinking. Both the Town secretary of the Party Committee and the township head were caught because of peeping at women peeing and getting caught adultery in the act by his wife, respectively. In order to thoroughly alter the mess, Wang Tiansheng, the legendary rural cadre with both skill and dash, was designated by the county Party committee as both the Town secretary of the Party Committee and the township head of Baipo Town. Appointed under such difficult circumstance, Wang Tiansheng carried out drastic reforms to combat corruption and deal with the chaos. However, local pressure groups and corrupt officials crazily pounced on Wang, and rumors were swirling. The Joint Investigation Group from both the provincial and municipal level came to Baipo Town. Secretary of provincial Party Committee tried to rehabilitate Wang, while the municipal party secretary, together with members from relevant departments from the municipal and county level, came to persuade Wang in person......

        Eleventh-century Germany

        The Swabian chronicles

        by I. Robinson

        Three of the most important chronicles of eleventh-century Germany were composed in the south-western duchy of Swabia. The chronicles reveal how between 1049 and 1100 the centripetal attraction of the reform papacy became the dominant fact of intellectual life in German reformed monastic circles. In the abbey of Reichenau Herman 'the Lame' composed a chronicle of the reign of Emperor Henry III (1039-56). His pupil, Berthold of Reichenau, continued his master's work, composing a detailed account of 1076-1079 in Germany. Bernold, a clergyman of Constance, continued the work of Herman and Berthold in a text containing the fullest extant account of 1080-1100. Herman's waning enthusiasm for the monarchy and growing interest in the newly reformed papacy were intensified in Berthold's chronicle, and writing in the new context of the reformed monasteries of south-western Germany, Bernold preached total obedience to the Gregorian papacy. The Swabian chronicles are an indispensable resource to the student of the changing loyalties and conflicts of eleventh-century Germany.

        Cricket and Broadcasting

        by Jack Williams, Jeffrey Richards

        Cricket and broadcasting explores how the significance of radio and television to cricket in England has grown since the beginnings of broadcasting. Since the Second World War cricket has been increasingly shaped by its relationship with broadcasting which has been a force for conservatism and change. Representations of cricket on radio and television have done much to determine levels of interest and participation in the sport. Major changes such as the growth of the limited-overs game, the expansion of international cricket, reforms to County Championship and the rise of sponsorship were dependent on support from television, and income from television has enabled county cricket to survive as the highest form of domestic cricket in England. This accessibly written book will be essential reading for scholars and students of sports history, social and cultural history, and media studies. ;

        Leading the localities

        Executive mayors in English local governance

        by Colin Copus, Martin Hargreaves

        This book, now available in paperback, is the result of national research conducted amongst England's directly elected mayors and the councillors that serve alongside them. It is the first such major publication to assess the impact on local politics of this new office and fills a gap in our understanding of how the Local Government Act 2000 has influenced local governance. The book also draws from a range of research that has focused on elected mayors - in England and overseas - to set out how the powers, roles and responsibilities of mayors and mayoral councils would need to change if English local politics is to fundamentally reconnect with citizens. It not only explores how English elected mayors are currently operating, but how the office could develop and, as such, is a major contribution to the debate about the governance of the English localities. ;

        The political marketing revolution

        Transforming the government of the UK

        by Jennifer Lees-Marshment

        This book shows how British politics is being transformed from a leadership-run system to one dictated by public needs and demands. No longer confined to party politics, organisations including the monarchy, the BBC, universities, local councils, charities and the Scottish Parliament are adopting the tools of market intelligence to understand their market needs and demands. The political marketing revolution raises many questions, such as whether the student or patient really does know best and can decide their own education and health care. The book calls for a debate about the movement of the British political system towards a market-orientation and a re-negotiation of the relationship between leaders and the market. Whilst recognising the need for political leaders to listen, this debate places some responsibilities on the political consumer, looking to create a new relationship that might work more effectively for both sides.

        Competition of Local Governments

        by FENG Xingyuan

        This book discusses the theoretical paradigm and analytical framework of local government competition. It carries out empirical analysis from several perspectives - local development mode, local protectionism, division of public service duties between different government levels, urban government competition, county and township level financial and fiscal system, and villager self-governance etc. The book expands the application of the paradigm of “competition-oriented government” in the analysis of economy, finance, and political behavior of local governments and explores the possibility of using fiscal federalism as a framework of order for local government competition.

        Women's work in the Civil Service and the London County Council, 1900–55

        by Helen Glew

        The Civil Service and the London County Council employed tens of thousands of women in Britain in the early twentieth century. As public employers these institutions influenced both each other and private organisations, thereby serving as a barometer or benchmark for the conditions of women's white-collar employment. Drawing on a wide range of archival sources - including policy documents, trade union records, women's movement campaign literature and employees' personal testimony - this is the first book-length study of women's public service employment in this period. It examines three aspects of their working lives - inequality of pay, the marriage bar and inequality of opportunity - and demonstrates how far wider cultural assumptions about womanhood shaped policies towards women's employment and experiences. Scholars and students with interests in gender, British social and cultural history and labour history will find this an invaluable text.
