        About the Dead

        by Travis Mossotti

Travis Mossotti writes with humor, gravity, and humility about subjects grounded in a world of grit, where the quiet mortality of working folk is weighed. To Mossotti, the love of a bricklayer for his wife is as complex and simple as life itself: "ask him to put into words what that sinking is, / that shudder in his chest, as he notices / the wrinkles gathering at the corners of her mouth." But not a whiff of sentiment enters these poems, for Mossotti has little patience for ideas of the noble or for sympathetic portraits of hard-used saints. His vision is clear, as clear as the memory of how scarecrows in the rearview, "each of them, stuffed / into a body they didn't choose, resembled / your own plight." His poetry embraces unsanctimonious life with all its wonder, its levity, and clumsiness.  About the Dead is an accomplished collection by a writer in control of a wide range of experience, and it speaks to the heart of any reader willing to catch his "drift, and ride it like the billowed / end of some cockamamie parachute all the way / back to the soft, dysfunctional, waiting earth."

      • The Wolf’s Son

        by Romana Petri

The sumptuously imagined novel of Jack London Romana Petri seized one of the most fascinating challenges that an author could undertake: writing the fury of living of a man who was a boxer, a seal hunter, an insurance agent, a gold prospector; a man who loved the blue shade of the forest and the dazzling radiance of the sea, who looked at the soul of populations fighting and at the heart of women. And women are the true engine of the story: the petty-bourgeois fragrance of Mabel, the concreteness of Bessie, the intellectual charm of Anna Strunsky, the determination of Charmain (“to be many women in one”), the irreplaceability of his sister Eliza. Then again, what Romana Petri wrote is not a biography. Figlio del lupo (lit. “The Wolf’s Son”) is a novel based on a true story. It’s the story of the characters whom we loved; the story of a man suspended between the great narrator and the socialist who wants to talk like a revolutionary to seven million workers, but who also can’t resist having his shoe laces tied for him because he has no time to lose; the story of a man suspended between the game of love promised, experienced, betrayed, always at high temperatures, and the torment of an impending failure.

        The Universe of Berlin, 1930-1933

        by Peter Walther

Berlin in 1930 is the glittering metropolis of the new Europe, faster and freer than the continent’s other capitals. Nowhere else do wastefulness and misery live in such close proximity. While Communists and Nazis fight their bloody brawls and Dorothy Thompson interviews Hitler, the Jewish clairvoyant Erik Jan Hanussen invites the leadership of the Berlin SA onto his luxury yacht, the »Ursel IV«, for a weekend trip. Maud von Ossietzky, worried about her husband Carl, increasingly turns to alcohol for comfort, and Ernst Thälmann, chair of the Communist party, finds solace in his lovers. Heinrich Brüning, still chancellor of the German Reich, plays a board game with his goddaughter on the evening of his dismissal. In the end, it all comes down to one question: will there be a »Third Reich«? Featuring trenchant, powerful portraits of figures such as Heinrich Brüning, Erik Jan Hanussen, Maud von Ossietzsky, Ernst Thälmann and Dorothy Thompson.

        FLORENCE

        Mistress of Max Gate

        by Peter TAIT

The Second Mrs Hardy   From the moment she first met Thomas Hardy in 1905, having written him an admiring letter, Florence Dugdale seemed destined for controversy. Her presence at Max Gate, both before and after the death of Hardy’s first wife Emma, and her clandestine courtship with a man nearly forty years her senior sparked suspicion among the locals and scorn from the Gifford family. She had wanted to be a writer herself, but was drawn into Hardy’s life as his ‘secretary’ and companion, and within a year of their own marriage was humiliated by his publication of poems commemorating the late Emma and his painful relationship with her.    Yet in the posthumous biography of her husband that bore her name she would tell the ‘truth’ and at last achieve the acclaim she sought – or so she had imagined, until that fiction too began to unravel. After fourteen years of marriage, and despite her own gifts and her life thereafter, her fate was to be remembered by her obituary tag in a national newspaper – ‘helpmate to genius’. Her love life stunted, her literary ambitions thwarted, disowned by the Stoker family and satirized by Somerset Maugham – Florence’s lot was an unenviable one. Why did she put up with it all?    In his compelling recreation of Florence’s life, Peter Tait tells of a letter, one that Hardy had written to her on the eve of their wedding, which she kept until her death, when, under instructions, it was destroyed … ‘And with it died part of the secret, the secret that helped explain Florence. For, as Thomas found out to his cost, there was more to Florence than was evident from their first meeting. And so began their trail of deceptions, first of Emma, then of their friends and, finally, of us all.’

The Story of Gill Dalley, co-founder of Soi Dog Foundation

by John Dalley, Donna Freelove & Barbara Young

When John and Gill Dalley travelled from their home in Britain on a dream holiday to a popular holiday resort in Thailand, little did they realise that they would become involved in the tragic tale of a street dog called Naga. This fateful meeting led them to taking the life changing decision to swap their lives in rural Yorkshire and embark on new adventures in Phuket, dedicating the rest of their days to campaigning against Asia's dog meat trade and setting up the world famous Soi Dog Foundation. Life on this idyllic island proved only the beginning of a series of challenging life lessons for this "ordinary" couple as they faced their toughest years together. This touching true story reveals the experiences John and his beloved wife Gill shared from the day they first met to Gill's tragic death from cancer in 2017. Featuring a photo block and joint memories from Gill's diary and personal reminiscences from SDF UK President Donna Freelove. This extraordinary story of an extraordinary woman is the legacy of Gill Dalley. Her impact on Thailand's cats and dogs is unparalleled and we are in awe of her. Her work has been continued by John, who was recently awarded an MBE. Her story will inspire animal lovers worldwide.
