Ich glaube nicht« Mehrfach kündigte Clemens Setz an, nie wieder Gedichte in Buchform zu veröffentlichen – um es in vorliegendem Band doch zu tun. Es handelt sich um Poesie der besonderen Art, denn sie ist ursprünglich in einem Medium entstanden, das es nicht mehr gibt: Der legendäre Mikroblogging-Dienst Twitter ist Geschichte, seit er von Elon Musk übernommen wurde. Er heißt jetzt bekanntlich X und funktioniert ganz anders. Das kreativitätsfördernde Zeichenlimit wurde entfernt, aber vor allem: Längere Zeit inaktive Accounts werden für immer und unwiederbringlich gelöscht – und mit ihnen die vielen poetischen Wunderkerzen, die dort funkeln. Das All im eignen Fell ist ein Erinnerungsbuch im doppelten Sinn. Es versammelt in einem ersten Teil eine Auswahl von Setz' eigenen, inzwischen gelöschten Twitter-Gedichten. Und erzählt im zweiten die kurze, aber umso blütenreichere Geschichte einer Gattung, die Schritt für Schritt aus unserer Wirklichkeit entfernt wird.
Im November 2011 überzog der Polizist John Pike auf einem kalifornischen Campus Studenten mit Pfefferspray, die dort im Rahmen von Occupy Wall Street friedlich demonstrierten. Wenige Tage später kursierten unzählige Varianten der Aufnahmen des Vorfalls im Netz: Pike auf Munchs »Der Schrei«, im Situation Room mit Präsident Barack Obama oder im Ring mit Sonny Liston und Muhammad Ali. Aus Sozialen Netzwerken wie Facebook oder Twitter sind variierende Kopien von Fotos oder Filmen wie der »Pfefferspray-Cop« kaum noch wegzudenken. Die israelische Kulturwissenschaftlerin Limor Shifman hat nun das erste Buch über solche »Meme« geschrieben. Sie spürt ihren Ursprüngen nach, grenzt sie von anderen Phänomenen ab und zeigt, wie solche Erzeugnisse kulturelle Grenzen überwinden und wie sie für eine Globalisierung von unten genutzt werden können.
Vor nicht einmal zwanzig Jahren nährte die Digitalisierung noch die Hoffnung auf eine universelle Befreiung der Menschen. Geblieben ist davon nicht viel: Die Furcht vor Überwachung ist zu einem ständigen Begleiter geworden. Mit Facebook, Twitter und anderen sozialen Medien hielt eine neue Form von Hetze Einzug in die Öffentlichkeit. Und auf die permanente Verfügbarkeit von Informationen folgte der Kampf der etablierten Medien gegen den digitalen Dauerbeschuss mit Fake News. Höchste Zeit also für eine kritische Bestandsaufnahme. In diesem Band gehen einige der wichtigsten Denkerinnen und Denker der Gegenwart drängenden Fragen nach: Wie lässt sich der digitale Kapitalismus zähmen? Stellt das Internet eine Gefahr für die Demokratie dar? Und wie können wir in einer digitalisierten Welt Autonomie (zurück)erobern? Unter den zahlreichen, zu Klassikern gewordenen Essays von Roland Barthes zählt der 1964 entstandene »Der Eiffelturm« zu den bekanntesten und folgenreichsten. In ihm wendet der Strukturalist sein Instrumentarium auf das weltweit bekannte Wahrzeichen von Paris, von ganz Frankreich, an − und gelangt zu überraschenden, immer noch beindruckenden Resultaten. Der Eiffelturm ist ein Mythos des Alltags, zugleich Symbol für technische Neuerungen wie unumgängliches Touristenziel, Wahrzeichen der aufkommenden Globalisierung, in jedem Buch, in jedem Film, im Fernsehen unausweichlich, auf Facebook und Twitter von jedermann identifizierbar − kurz, ein Zeichen für alles und jedes. This book presents a new conceptual model for understanding the role of the media in the construction of public knowledge, belief and opinion in the context of a radically changed communications infrastructure. Drawing on a series of empirical studies conducted over nearly a decade, Happer deploys evidence of a 'disconnect' between neoliberal media and the public which is rooted in a disaffection with a mainstream political culture which has failed to deliver the societal outcomes promised. As people are pushed towards alternative digital sources, new communities of opinion are produced in ways which polarise publics and ultimately limit the potential for social change. Offering an innovative and urgently needed new sociological analysis, this book is required reading for an inter-disciplinary field of media, journalism, and politics/IR which has largely abandoned questions of media power and public opinion management, as well as policymakers, science communicators and journalists. Echoing Joseph Paxton's question at the close of the Great Exhibition, 'What is to become of the Crystal Palace?', this interdisciplinary essay collection argues that there is considerable potential in studying this unique architectural and art-historical document after 1851, when it was rebuilt in the South London suburb of Sydenham. It brings together research on objects, materials and subjects as diverse as those represented under the glass roof of the Sydenham Palace itself; from the Venus de Milo to Sheffield steel, souvenir 'peep eggs' to war memorials, portrait busts to imperial pageants, tropical plants to cartoons made by artists on the spot, copies of paintings from ancient caves in India to 1950s film. Essays do not simply catalogue and collect this eclectic congregation, but provide new ways for assessing the significance of the Sydenham Crystal Palace for both nineteenth- and twentieth-century studies. The volume will be of particular interest to researchers and students of British cultural history, museum studies, and art history.

Dijana, a daughter of working-class immigrants, tells the story of her difficult childhood and adolescence, how should became a journalist and later a writer in a society full of prejudices, glass ceilings and obstacles. How she gradually became a stereotypical ‘success story’, even though she still struggles with writing, because she can’t afford a ‘room of her own’. Dijana is a daughter of working-class immigrants, who came to Slovenia in the eighties in search of a better future. The family is building a house but is made redundant from the local factory when Yugoslavia is in the midst of an economic crisis. When her parents get divorced, Dijana, her older sister and mother struggle with basic needs. She is ashamed of their poverty, her classmates bully her because of her immigrant status, but mostly because of her being ‘white trash’. In the local school she meets teachers with prejudices against immigrants, but is helped by a librarian who spots her talent. When Dijana goes to secondary school, she moves in with her older sister who lives in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. Her sister is into rave culture and Dijana starts to explore experimenting with drugs, music and dance. At the secondary school, she is again considered ‘the weird kid’, as she isn’t enough of a foreigner for other immigrant kids because she is from the country, yet she isn’t Slovenian enough for other native kids. She falls even deeper into drug addiction, fails the first year of school and has to move back to live with her mother. She takes on odd jobs to make ends meet. Whilst working as a waitress she encounters sexism and sexual violence from customers and abuse from the boss. She finishes night school and graduates. She meets many ‘lost’ people of her generation along the way, who tell her their stories about precarious, minimum wage jobs, lack of opportunities, expensive rent, etc. Dijana writes for numerous newspapers but loses or quits her job, because she isn’t allowed to write the stories she wants or because of the bad working conditions or the blatant sexual harassment. Due to the high rent in the capital, Dijana has to move to the countryside to live with her mother. She feels lonely there, struggles with anxiety and cannot write a second book, because she is constantly under pressure to make a living. She realises that she must persevere regardless of the obstacles, she must follow her inner truth and by writing about it, try to create a community of like-minded people, a community of people who support each other – all literature/art is social.
