        Italian women writing

        by Sharon Wood

        How has it happened that from being politely ignored or marginalized just half a century ago, women writers in Italy are now at the centre of literary activity? To what extent does writing by women reflect the successes and failures of Italy in the post-war period? What form did the feminist movement in Italy take, and how did this affect what - and how - women wrote? And how are women who write responding to a more fragmented post-modern age? These are just some of the questions asked of the relationship between women and fiction in post-war Italy in this anthology. It includes stories by Cialente, Ginzburg, Ortese, Morante, Romano, Maraini and Duranti as well as Bompiani, Sanvitale, Mizzau, Scaramuzzino, Capriolo and Petrignani. The thirteen stories presented offer a range of style and content indicative of the wealth and diversity of writing by women, and their reading is supported by critical notes and an extensive vocabulary. This is a clear and challenging introduction to the rich field of women and fiction in Italy. ;

        Practical Feline Behaviour

        Understanding Cat Behaviour and Improving Welfare

        by Trudi Atkinson

        Practical Feline Behaviour contains all the relevant information that a veterinary nurse or technician needs to understand and handle the behaviour and welfare of house cats, and to offer safe and practical advice to clients. There have been ground-breaking advances in our understanding of feline behaviour in recent years and, to protect the welfare of cats, it is increasingly important that anyone involved with their care, especially those in a professional capacity, keep up to date with these developments. This approachable and down-to-earth text describes the internal and external influences on feline behaviour; on communication, learning, social behaviour, the relationship between behaviour and disease, and the cat - human relationship. It also provides practical advice on how the welfare of cats in our care may be protected and how behaviour problems should be addressed and how to avoid them. In this book Trudi Atkinson draws on her extensive experience as a veterinary nurse and a Certified Clinical Animal Behaviourist to provide a rapid reference and an intensely practical feline behaviour resource for owners, breeders, veterinary professionals, shelter and cattery workers and anyone involved in the care of our feline companions. - Practical, down to earth guide detailing all aspects of feline behaviour - Rapid reference for instant access to information - Written by a well-known animal behaviourist who has extensive experience in treating feline behaviour problems and in advising clients to protect the welfare of their cats - Includes a foreword by John Bradshaw, School of Veterinary Science at University of Bristol, UK

        VOLVER A MASADA

        by Amnon Ben-Tor

        VOLVER A MASADA por Amnon Ben-Tor Este libro resume los ocho volúmenes de la serie de Informes finales de Masada que se han publicado hasta la fecha. Las excavaciones en el sitio bajo la dirección de Yigael Yadin en la década de 1960 revelaron el palacio-fortaleza herodiano, que fue el último bastión de los rebeldes judíos en su revuelta contra las poderosas legiones romanas entre los años 66 a 73 de la era cristiana. Según el testimonio del historiador contemporáneo Flavio Josefo, los defensores optaron por suicidarse antes que rendirse. Cientos de voluntarios de todo el mundo participaron en dichas excavaciones. Los capítulos cubren los restos arquitectónicos y pequeños hallazgos de la época de Herodes, de los celotes y del período romano, las obras romanas durante el sitio y restos del período bizantino. En las excavaciones se encontraron miles de objetos, incluidos manuscritos. Masada no es solo un sitio arqueológico, sino también un símbolo, principalmente, pero no exclusivamente para los modernos israelíes. Esto se refleja en los cientos de miles de visitantes que acuden cada año de todos los rincones del mundo. En 2001, Masada fue declarado por la UNESCO como Patrimonio de la Humanidad. El capítulo final del libro examina el así llamado "mito de Masada" a la luz de la evidencia arqueológica y evalúa las recientes críticas de la metodología y de las conclusiones históricas de los excavadores de Masada en vista de sus resultados reales. Amnon Ben-Tor, profesor emérito de la Cátedra Yigael Yadin de Arqueología de la Tierra de Israel en el Instituto de Arqueología de la Universidad Hebrea de Jerusalén, fue miembro del equipo de Yadin en las excavaciones de Masada. Estudió arqueología e historia judía en la Universidad Hebrea, donde se doctoró en 1968 y enseñó hasta 2004. Paralelamente, participó en excavaciones en diversos sitios en Israel, incluido un estudio regional del área occidental del Valle de Jezreel, en los sitios de Tel Kiri, Tel Kashish y Yokneam. Desde 1990 dirige las excavaciones en Hatzor de la Fundación Selz en memoria de Yigael Yadin. 25×19 cm, 320 páginas, edición en tapas duras, muchas fotos e ilustraciones.

        "I am Jugoslovenka!"

        Feminist performance politics during and after Yugoslav Socialism

        by Jasmina Tumbas, Amelia Jones, Marsha Meskimmon

        "I am Jugoslovenka" argues that queer-feminist artistic and political resistance were paradoxically enabled by socialist Yugoslavia's unique history of patriarchy and women's emancipation. Spanning performance and conceptual art, video works, film and pop music, lesbian activism and press photos of female snipers in the Yugoslav wars, the book analyses feminist resistance in a range of performative actions that manifest the radical embodiment of Yugoslavia's anti-fascist, transnational and feminist legacies. It covers celebrated and lesser-known artists from the 1970s to today, including Marina Abramovic, Sanja Ivekovic, Vlasta Delimar, Tanja Ostojic, Selma Selman and Helena Janecic, along with music legends Lepa Brena and Esma Redzepova. "I am Jugoslovenka" tells a unique story of women's resistance through the intersection of feminism, socialism and nationalism in East European visual culture.

      • Praticare e raccontare i santi segni

        by Franco Giulio, Brambilla

        In 1927 Romano Guardini wrote a precious little book on The Holy Signs, with pages of incomparable depth. Franco Giulio Brambilla, a well-known theologian and pastor, takes up and revisits the theme in a current and captivating language. The liturgical signs are here characterized by their prevailing trait: bodily signs (standing, kneeling, beating one’s chest, raising and imposing hands), creatural signs (water, light/fire, oil, bread and wine) and ritual signs (candle, ash, incense, robes, bells). The result is a surprising journey that renews these symbols to hand over the fire of existence to the new generations.

        An Introduction to Personalism

        by Juan Manuel Burgos

        Much has been written about the great personalist philosophers of the 20th century – including Jacques Maritain and Emmanuel Mournier, Martin Buber and Emmanuel Levinas, Dietrich von Hildebrand and Edith Stein, Max Scheler and Karol Wojtyla (later Pope John Paul II) – but few books cover the personalist movement as a whole. An Introduction to Personalism fills that gap.Juan Manuel Burgos shows the reader how personalist philosophy was born in response to the tragedies of two World Wars, the Great Depression, and the totalitarian regimes of the 1930s. Through a revitalization of the concept of the person, an array of thinkers developed a philosophy both rooted in the best of the intellectual tradition and capable of dialoguing with contemporary concerns. Burgos then delves into the potent ideas of more than twenty thinkers who have contributed to the growth of personalism, including Romano Guardini, Gabriel Marcel, Xavier Zubiri, and Michael Polanyi. Burgos’s encyclopedic knowledge of the movement allows for a concise and well-rounded perspective on each of the personalists studied.An Introduction to Personalism concludes with a synthesis of personalist thought, bringing together the brightest insights of each personalist philosopher into an organic whole. Burgos argues that personalism is not an eclectic hodge-podge, but a full-fledged school of philosophy, and gives a dynamic and rigorous exposition of the key features of the personalist position.Our times are marked by numerous and often contradictory ideas about the human person. An Introduction to Personalism presents an engaging anthropological vision capable of taking the lead in the debate about the meaning of human existence and of winning hearts and minds for the cause of the dignity of every person in the 21st century and beyond.

        Mourning Doves

        Out of Print

        by Angela Romano, Anne Cain

        In the world of the future, humans uneasily walk side by side with "Kin"—humanoids with animal mutations. TASK was formed to help ease the way for human and Kin to exist together. The program also deals with the problems those differences cause.Leander Kale and his partner, Epsilon Maddox, are one of TASK's top teams with a special bond all their own. Praised for their abilities and cursed for their existence, Leander and Epsilon struggle to do what they do best: hunt the Hunters, a breed of Kin that lives only to infect others and kill. But now there's a leak inside TASK, an informant telling the Hunters when a team is closing in, giving them a critical advantage and a chance to escape.That leaves Leander, Epsilon, and the other TASK members fighting blind—fighting for their lives and the lives of all of humanity. All they need is one lead, one clue to help them find the traitor, and they have to find it before the Hunters invade TASK itself and destroy them all. ;

        POWERS

        by GIOVANNI MAGISTRELLI

        In Milan, a father, to save his newborn son in danger of life, accepts the help of a mysterious doctor. Decades later, in Piazza Duomo, Giorgio Braga meets his friend Romano Cattaneo, whom he hadn’t seen since elementary school, when the latter had suddenly vanished into thin air. In the same days, Milena, a prostitute, is brutally killed just outside the Lombard metropolis, while individuals with special abilities are supervised and recruited throughout Italy by a secret government organization under the command of Siegfried Siller, a powerful official, ready for anything. What are his plans and what links them to Milena’s murder and the meeting between the two old schoolmates? From Milan to Rome, disturbing and uncontrolled powers overwhelm any scruple in the extreme attempt to prevail over one other and to survive in the new era of light, but also of darkness, which is looming on the horizon.
