In good taste
How Britain’s middle classes found their style
by Ben Highmore, Christopher Breward
In postwar Britain, journalists and politicians prophesised that the class system would not survive a consumer culture where everyone had TVs and washing machines, and where more and more people owned their own homes. They were to be proved entirely wrong. In good taste charts how class culture, rather than being destroyed by mass consumption, was remade from flat-pack furniture, Mediterranean cuisine and lifestyle magazines. Novelists, cartoonists and playwrights satirised the tastes of the emerging middle classes, and sociologists claimed that an entire population was suffering from status anxiety, but underneath it all, a world was being constructed out of duvets, quiches and mayonnaise, easy chairs from Habitat, white emulsion paint and ubiquitous well-scrubbed, second-hand pine kitchen tables. This was less a world of symbolic goods and more an intimate environment alive with new feelings and attitudes.

Siete Plantas.
Historias de la gente sin nombre
by Diana Obando, Sara Muñoz
“This book is a ferment.” It gathers the stories of seven plants and the experiences of a group of women who cultivated their relationship with them during a deep study process. Their encounter produced a system that weaves analogies between the body itself and how non-human people relate, whether they are plants, animals, fungi, places in the territory, or telluric forces. Each text reveals the hunger, wounds, and poisons of the person who studies and offers intimacy and work, as well as secrecy and witchcraft.“In some traditions of the Amazonian foothills and the highlands, dry corn is chewed and spit into a ceramic bowl when preparing chicha. Then water and panela are added; the mixture rests in a cool place where direct sunlight does not reach, waiting for fermentation to begin....] In certain places, on the occasion of mingas or some collective agreement, everyone prepares chicha. The people present chew and spit into the bowl. This is how the will to come together is declared and embodied. Each family or person takes home a part of the seed and asks for what the collective body and the agreement need: more material or sweetness, lightness or firmness. The chicha speaks and often says what people don't.

Ai Wan’s Daffodil Ball
by Huang Beijia
After several years of conception and more than one year of writing, Huang Beijia, a famous children’s literature writer, has recently published her new dedication named 'Ai Wan’s Daffodil Ball' in Jiangsu Children Press. The story is set in China in the early 1980s. At that time, the country was like a sleeping giant who was about to wake up. It was easy for people to get lost in that restless, unstable society. This is the setting for the story of the eight-year-old Aiwan. She grew up quietly with her brothers and sisters in an ordinary family in the small town of Qingyang. The story of Aiwan's upbringing is the same as that of many other girls during that period. Her ordinary life style was peaceful and low-key, just like the daffodil in the conch pot, which would be satisfied even with just a little water, all the while sending out a gentle fragrance. Her philosophy of life was learnt from her own life experience in this family, instead of being taught by others. Hard and restrained as her childhood was, we could still imagine that once she grew up, she would discover the wings to fly out into this wide world, and her wealth of experiences would become her fortune, helping her to create a bright, amazing future.

Animal Welfare in a Changing World
by Edited by Andrew Butterworth
Contemporary and challenging, this thought-provoking book outlines a number of the key dilemmas in animal welfare for today's, and tomorrow's, world. The issues discussed range from the welfare of hunted animals, to debates around intensive farming versus sustainability, and the effects of climate and environmental change. The book explores the effects of fences on wild animals and human impacts on carrion animals; the impacts of tourism on animal welfare; philosophical questions about speciesism; and the quality and quantity of animal lives. The welfare impacts of human-animal interactions are explored, including human impacts on marine mammals, fish, wildlife, and companion and farm animals. Animal Welfare in a Changing World provides: Concise, opinion-based views on important issues in animal welfare by world experts and key opinion leaders. Pieces based on experience, which balance evidence-based approaches and the welfare impacts of direct engagement through training, campaigning and education. A wide-ranging collection of examples and descriptions of animal welfare topics which outline dilemmas in the real world, that are sometimes challenging, and not always comfortable reading. Searching for Sweetness
Women’s Mobile Lives in China and Lesotho
by Sarah Hanisch
Traversing from the rapidly urbanising county-level city of Fuqing to the remote mountainous kingdom of Lesotho in Southern Africa, Searching for Sweetness is one of the first and most extensive ethnographies linking rural-to-urban migration in China with Chinese migration to Africa. Against the backdrop of China’s national struggle for modernity and globalisation, Sarah Hanisch examines Chinese migrant women’s complex and ever-shifting struggles for upward social mobility across different generations and localities in China and Lesotho. Embedding the women’s individual portraits into larger historical contexts, Hanisch illustrates how these women interpret and narrate their migratory and everyday experiences through and beyond powerful state metanarratives on ‘sweetness’ and ‘bitterness’. In her exploration of migratory identities and projects that have been overlooked by previous studies, Hanisch brings uniquely gendered, multi-sited, and intergenerational perspectives to existing scholarship on Chinese internal and international migration.
