Masques of difference presents an annotated edition of four seventeenth-century entertainments written by Ben Jonson for the court of James I. These masques reflect both the confidence and the anxieties of the English aristocracy at a time when notions of monarchy, empire, and national identity were being radically redefined. All four masques reflect the royal court's self-representation as moral, orderly, and just, in contrast to stylised images of chaotically (and exotically) 'othered' groups: Africans, the Irish, witches, and the homoeroticised figure of the Gypsy. This edition presents two masques that have received recent attention in the classroom - The Masque of Blackness and The Masque of Queens - and two that have never before been anthologised for the student reader - The Irish Masque at Court and The Masque of the Gypsies Metamorphosed. Collections XVI contains new documentary evidence concerning Luminalia, the anonymous Shrovetide masque of 1638, and theatrical references in the Bridewell Hospital Court of Governors' Minute Books. The volume also includes editions of fragments from an early seventeenth-century adaptation of Plautus' Captivi, held in the archives of New College, Oxford, and the part of Amarath from Harvard University manuscript Thr.10.1. The volume is edited by Eugene Giddens, with contributions from Nadine N. W. Akkerman, William Poole, Abigail Rokison, and Duncan Salkeld. It is part of the Malone Society's ongoing Collections series, which gathers together documents relating to the drama of the period. ;

The new book by the well-known Ukrainian historian, chief of the Department of history of National University of Kyiv Mohyla Academy, professor Natalia Yakovenko, despite being a university textbook and a propaedeutic course on a professional subject, is written in a simple and easy to read manner which is far from academic cliché and embodies high academic style in its best meaning. However, the word 'textbook' even in its most positive meaning applies to this book only as a kind of mask that hides much more complex structure, not only stylistically but by its content and pragmatism as well. As the professor herself admits, this book does not belong to any classic genres.
