Halophytes and Climate Change
Adaptive Mechanisms and Potential Uses
by Mirza Hasanuzzaman, Sergey Shabala, Masayuki Fujita
This book contains current knowledge and the most recent developments in the field of halophyte biology, ecology, and potential uses. Halophytes are characterised as plants that can survive and complete their life cycle in highly saline environments. This book explores the adaptive mechanisms and special features of halophytes that allow them to grow in environments that are unsuitable for conventional crops and considers their role as a source of food, fuel, fodder, fibre, essential oils, and medicines. Halophytes and Climate Change includes coverage of: - Special morphological, anatomical, and physiological features of halophytes - Ion accumulation patterns and homeostasis in halophytes - Potential use of halophytes in the remediation of saline soil - Growth and physiological response and tolerance to toxicity and drought - Mangrove ecology, physiology, and adaptation Written by a team of international authors and presented in full colour, this book is an essential resource for researchers in the fields of plant physiology, ecology, soil science, environmental science, botany, and agriculture.

Mondnacht
Hör- und Fernsehspiele
by Stanisław Lem, Irmtraud Zimmermann-Göllheim, Jutta Janke, Charlotte Eckert, Klaus Staemmler

Plant Membrane and Vacuolar Transporters
by Tracey A. Cuin, Jay Morris, Toshio Sana, Tzvetina Brumbarova, Jon K. Pittman, Yongchao Liang, Bibin Paulose, Katsuhiro Shiratake, Uwe Ludewig, Nobukazu Shitan, Tetsuro Mimura, Savita Dahiya. Edited by Pawan K. Jaiwal, Rana P. Singh, Om Parkash Dhankher.
While information on the roles and regulation of transporters for all major nutrients and metabolites in plants has increased significantly, a synthesis of this research has been lacking. Based on current research in genomics and proteomics, this book clarifies the identification and characterization of plant membrane and vacuolar transporters. Transporter functions such as mineral nutrition, cell homeostasis, storage and stress responses are examined with a focus on enhancing nutrient use efficiency in crops, and increasing crops’ ability to withstand nutrient stresses and improve nutrient storage.

Cells and Human Health, Third Edition
by Ingrid Schaefer Sprague
The amazing complexity of human anatomy and physiology is dependent upon its single most basic unit: the cell. Humans can attribute their overall health to homeostasis, the balance of activity within properly functioning cells. Additionally, cells are affected by the food we eat along with the microscopic entities that make us ill. Cells and Human Health, Third Edition covers how cells work to maintain human health and immunity as well as the history of cell discovery and the basics of cellular activity. Readers will also learn the processes of illnesses and corresponding genetics that compromise a cell's proper activity in the human being.

The Nervous System, Third Edition
by F. Fay Evans-Martin, Ph.D.
The nervous system allows us to move, feel, and think, and it is involved in nearly all of the functions of the human body. Nerves communicate signals between the brain and muscles, allowing us to move our hands and feet. Or, they relay messages about the environment through touch, taste, sight, and smell. Nerves can also communicate information about how we are feeling at any particular time and help to maintain homeostasis, or a stable state of equilibrium. The Nervous System, Third Edition discusses the development and organization of this diverse system, its functions, and potential injuries and complications. Packed with full-color photographs and illustrations, this absorbing book provides students with sufficient background information through references, websites, and a bibliography.
