        Serving the empire in the Great War

        The Cypriot Mule Corps, imperial loyalty and silenced memory

        by Andrekos Varnava. Series edited by Andrew S. Thompson

        This book contributes to the growing literature on the role of the British non-settler empire in the Great War by exploring the service of the Cypriot Mule Corps on the Salonica Front, and after the war in Constantinople. Varnava encompasses all aspects of the story of the Mule Corps, from the role of the animals to the experiences of the men driving them both during and after the war, as well as how and why this significant story in the history of Cyprus and the British Empire has been forgotten. The book will be of great value to anyone interested in the impact of the Great War upon the British Empire in the Mediterranean, and vice- versa.

        Enthusiast

        Essays on modern American literature

        by David Herd

        Enthusiast! is a polemical history of American literature told from the point of view of six of its major enthusiasts. Complaining that his age was 'retrospective', Emerson injected enthusiasm into American literature as a way of making it new. 'What,' he asked, 'is a man good for without enthusiasm? and what is enthusiasm but the daring of ruin for its object?' This book takes enthusiasm to be a defining feature of American literature, showing how successive major writers - Melville, Thoreau, Pound, Moore, Frank O'Hara and James Schuyler - have modernized and re-modeled Emerson's founding sense of enthusiasm. The book presents the writer as enthusiast, showing how enthusiasm is fundamental to the composition and the circulation of literature. Enthusiasm, it is argued, is the way literary value is passed on. Starting with a brief history of enthusiasm from Plato to Kant and Emerson, the book features chapters on each of Melville, Thoreau, Pound, Moore, O'Hara, and Schuyler. Each chapter presents an aspect of the writer as enthusiast, the book as a whole charting the changing sense of literary enthusiasm from Romanticism to the present day. Lucidly written and combatively argued, the book will appeal to readers of American Literature or Modern Poetry, and to all those interested in the circulation of literary work. ;

        Tis Pity She's a Whore

        John Ford

        by Derek Roper

        John Ford's tragedy, first printed in 1633, is the first major English play to take as its theme a subject still rarely handled: fulfilled incest between brother and sister. It is one of the most studied and performed of all plays of the period, and has been successfully adapted for film and radio. The Revels plays edition by Derek Roper has been the standard scholarly edition since it appeared in 1975. This new edition uses the same authoritative text, but with notes designed for modern undergraduate use. The substantial introduction has been completely rewritten to take account of the studies and new approaches of the last twenty years. It presents the play as an 'interrogative text', in which subversive meanings are inscribed within an apparently orthodox narrative; as a courageous treatment of forbidden love; and as an achieved work of Baroque art. ;

        Tis Pity She's a Whore

        By John Ford

        by Martin White

        John Ford's tragedy, first printed in 1633, is the first major English play to take as its theme a subject still rarely handled: fulfilled incest between brother and sister. This Revels Plays edition is a scholarly, modern-spelling edition of one of the most studied and performed of all plays of the period. White's critical introduction explores the textual and theatrical histories of the play, exploring closely its relationship to the particular stage and audience for which it was written. This Revels edition allows the modern reader to become, in Ford's words, an 'actor that but reads'.

        Edwin Morgan

        Inventions of modernity

        by Colin Nicholson

        Edwin Morgan is Scotland's major living poet, and Inventions of modernity was the first book-length study of his work. Since the 1940s Morgan's poetry has been carving out an alternative to the conventional evolutions from Modernism to Postmodernism, creating instead a substantial body of writing that ranges from the sublime to the hilarious. Instinctively at odds with the literary politics of the Pound-Eliot axis that remained influential deep into the twentieth century, Morgan develops instead a radical and libertarian poetics in an encyclopaedia of forms; from Anglo-Saxon metre through sonnet-sequences to concrete poems, and including gay poetry, science fiction verse and prize-winning translations into both English and Scots from numerous languages. This authoritative volume is of interest to students, teachers and academic researchers involved with strategies of reading, with cultural studies, with the politics of literary history and with gay and transgressive writing. ;

        Das Erscheinen des Dionysos

        Antike Mythologie und moderne Metapher

        by Karl Heinz Bohrer

        Wurde Dionysos erst in der Moderne dionysisch? Dionysos, Sohn des Zeus, Gott der Ekstase, wurden viele Eigenschaften zugeschrieben. Aber nur eine unterscheidet ihn von allen anderen Göttern: sein plötzliches »Erscheinen«, jene mysteriöse Ereignishaftigkeit, die mit seinem Auftreten verbunden war und schon in den griechischen Texten thematisch wurde. Karl Heinz Bohrer begibt sich in seinem neuen Buch auf die Spuren dieser Eigenschaft des Dionysos und zeigt, wie sie sich sukzessive vom Mythos abgelöst hat und nach 1800 zum Signum der romantisch-modernen Literatur und Philosophie wurde. Hölderlins dionysischer Augenblick, Nietzsches dionysische Ästhetik und die mythopoetische Metapher der modernen Lyrik bei Pound, T. S. Eliot, Rilke und Paul Valéry sind die wichtigsten Stationen, an denen das Dionysische des modernen Dionysos erkennbar wird: als Ausdrucksform des »Ereignisses« und des »Erscheinens«, die zu zentralen Kategorien der zeitgenössischen Kunst- und Literaturtheorien werden. Die Diskussion der Theorie des »Ereignisses« im Surrealismus sowie prominent bei Martin Heidegger und Jean-François Lyotard schließt diese fesselnde Studie zum dionysischen Diskurs der Moderne ab.

        Introduction to English Renaissance comedy

        by Alexander Leggatt

        Introduction to English Renaissance comedy provides a comprehensive introduction to Elizabethan, Jacobean and Caroline comedy, covering both public and private theatres, emphasising the eclectic, experimental nature of this comedy: its departures from the mainstream New Comedy tradition, its searching, witty analysis of social and personal relations in court, city and country. This book makes a close analysis of some of the richest comedies of the period, making unexpected connections between them: Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Tempest, Lyly's Endymion, Greene's Friar Bacon and Friar Bungay, Marston's The Malcontent, Middleton's Michaelmas Term, Jonson's Bartholomew Fair, Shirley's The Lady of Pleasure and Brome's A Jovial Crew. Through these plays the reader is given a comprehensive picture of English comedy in one of its most creative periods. ;

        Chronicle of a Blood Merchant

        by YU Hua

        One of the last decade's ten most influential books in China, this internationally acclaimed novel by one of the mainland's most important contemporary writers provides an unflinching portrait of life under Chairman Mao. A cart-pusher in a silk mill, XU Sanguan augments his meager salary with regular visits to the local blood chief. His visits become lethally frequent as he struggles to provide for his wife and three sons at the height of the Cultural Revolution. Shattered to discover that his favorite son was actually born of a liaison between his wife and a neighbor, he suffers his greatest indignity, while his wife is publicly scorned as a prostitute. Although the poverty and betrayals of Mao's regime have drained him, XU Sanguan ultimately finds strength in the blood ties of his family. With rare emotional intensity, grippingly raw description of place and time, and clear-eyed compassion, YU Hua gives us a stunning tapestry of human life in the grave particulars of one man's days.

        Amelie Trott and the Earth Watchers

        by Moyra Irving

        This is the extraordinary story of how one small girl stopped a planetary catastrophe. It’s a very timely book, written for the child in us all, with a forceful message about the power of young people to transform the world - a theme currently demonstrated by brave young heroes like Greta Thunberg. And with magical synchronicity, the very week Greta began her lone vigil outside the Swedish government last year, over 1,000 miles (1,897 km) away in the fictional world of books, Amelie Trott took to Parliament Square, London - on a mission to avert the End of the World. It’s a family drama with an international feel - set mainly in England but with episodes in Washington DC and around the world.

        Born Hutsi

        by Fiston Mudacumura

        The author was raised in a family of only survivors from the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsis. Even FARG (A survivors fund) allegedly paid for his school fees for some time. Through FARG reform, he learned that his father had associated with perpetrators even if he was also killed in 1994. Digesting that information as a teenager was not easy. In this book, you read about his other close-to-normal upbringing like infatuation, sex advice from fellow teenagers, getting conned in Paris and arrested on his first trip to France, his take from the "Ndi umunyarwanda" campaign, #PK saving him from getting expelled at the university, joining a political party at the university,...
