View Rights PortalAt Text we want to publish books that make a difference to people’s lives. We believe that reading should be a marvellous experience, that every book you read should somehow change your life if only by a fraction. We love the phrase ‘lost in a book’—that’s where we want our readers to be. You can’t get lost in a newspaper or a magazine or even a movie. But people get lost in books every day—on the tram, on the beach, in bed. Reading is what keeps the imagination supple and challenges preconceptions and prejudices. You read at your own speed, and the world you enter courtesy of the writer is yours and yours only, even if the person next to you on the bus is reading exactly the same book. We publish a very broad range of fiction and non-fiction, international and local, books for adults and young adults.

This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons () open access license. Beyond text? Critical practices and sensory anthropology is about the relationship between anthropological understandings of the world, sensory perception and aesthetic practices. It suggests that if different sensory experiences embody and facilitate different kinds of knowledge, then we need to develop new methods and more creative forms of representation that are not based solely around text or on correspondence theories of truth. The volume brings together leading figures in anthropology, visual and sound studies to explore how knowledge, sensation and embodied experiences can be researched and represented by combining different visual, aural and textual forms which it demonstrates through an accompanying DVD. The book and DVD make an argument for a necessary, critical development in anthropological ways of knowing that take place not merely at the level of theory and representation but also through innovative fieldwork methods and media practices.
This collection of essays focuses attention on the broad issue of Renaissance textuality. It explores such topics as the position of the reader relative to the text; the impact of editorial strategies and modes of presentation on our understanding of the text; the complexities of extended textual histories; and the relevance of gender to the process of textual retrieval and preservation. The essays, whilst informed by contemporary theory, are not dominated by a single programmatic viewpoint. Reflecting the multiplicitous nature of Renaissance textuality, the collection provides space for a variety of different positions and lines of analysis and enquiry. The Renaissance text will be of interest to those with specialist concerns in editing, textuality and bibliography, and will also be of interest to those more generally concerned with Renaissance literature or with textual or literary history. ;

What do the alteration of typical characters in Chinese TV series and the sudden rise of reality show say about the great transformation of Chinese society? How does Chinese avant-garde art, a representative of Chinses elite culture, develop following the social and economic reform? What kind of social psychology has been reflected by the burgeoning internet-based grassroots media in China? Answers all lie in this masterpiece edited by Professor Zhou Xian. Observing Chinese social transformation from the unique perspective of visual culture, the book not only portrays a complete landscape of contemporary Chinese visual culture which covers mass culture, avant-garde art, grassroots media, city image, scopic regime and visual technology, but also reveals the interrelationship between visual culture and the social and individual construction since 1970s.
Martha Gellhorn was the doyenne of twentieth century war correspondence. Opinionated, honest and unafraid, she covered conflicts from the Spanish Civil War to Reagan's wars in Central America in the 1980s. Martha Gellhorn: the war writer in the field and in the text is the first critical study of her Second World War fiction and journalism. Often overlooked in accounts of war literature is the writer's precise position in relation to battle and his or her resultant standing in the text. Kate McLoughlin traces Gellhorn's daring attempts to access the war zone and her constructions of the woman war correspondent in her despatches, novels, short stories and play. Drawing on unpublished letters, close attention is given to Gellhorn's rivalry with Ernest Hemingway (the two were married from 1940 to 1945) over reaching the Normandy beaches on D-Day and its textual outcome in the pages of Collier's magazine. McLoughlin goes on to examine Gellhorn's increasingly negative portrayals of the glamorous female war reporter and to suggests why such disillusionment might have set in. ;
Sustainable and integrated regeneration in the context of culture and tourism is explored for the first time within this book. The text is enhanced by international case studies.

This book brings together studies of cultural institutions in Manchester from 1850 to the present day, giving an unprecedented account of the city's cultural evolution. These bring to light the remarkable range of Manchester's contribution to modern cultural life, including the role of art education, popular theatre, religion, pleasure gardens, clubs and societies. The chapters show the resilience and creativity of Manchester's cultural institutions since 1850, challenging any simple narrative of urban decline following the erosion of Lancashire's industrial base, at the same time illustrating the range of activities across the social classes. This book will appeal to everyone interested in the cultural life of the city of Manchester, including cultural historians, sociologists and urban geographers, as well as general readers with interests in the city. It is written by leading international authorities, including Viv Gardner, Stephen Milner, Mike Savage, Bill Williams and Janet Wolff.

Emerging Art in Ukraine is a book to be the first comprehensive publication about contemporary young art in Ukraine, that has flourished in the country in recent years. The authors named the project EMERGING ART since they are trying to demonstrate to the world the art of new age, young talents who each have an individual style, a specialised education, exhibition experience and promising creativity. And who grew up as both individuals and creative personalities alongside our country during its era of independence. Along with their works, the reader will find these artists’ biographies as well as their answers to questions exploring what art is for them and where they find inspiration; the manifestation of national identity in their works; changes in creativity during the war; and, of course, their hope for the future of Ukrainian art.
Populism is a powerful force today, but its full scope has eluded the analytical tools of both orthodox and heterodox 'populism studies'. This book provides a valuable alternative perspective. It reconstructs in detail for the first time the sociological analyses of US demagogues by members of the Frankfurt School and compares these with contemporary approaches. Modern demagogy emerges as a key under-researched feature of populism, since populist movements, whether 'left' or 'right', are highly susceptible to 'demagogic capture'. The book also details the culture industry's populist contradictions - including its role as an incubator of modern demagogues - from the 1930s through to today's social media and 'Trumpian psychotechnics'. Featuring a previously unpublished text by Adorno on modern demagogy as an appendix, it will be of interest to everyone concerned about the rise of demagogic populism today.
The book contains over fifty interviews with artists, curators, and art critics, who talk about their reactions to contemporary events in Ukraine as citizens and as artists. Together with the author, they reflect on creative response of the modern art community to the events in Ukraine during the Revolution of Dignity and the war with Russia (before the full-scale invasion) and the role of art and artists in conflict. The book includes over 100 reproductions of visual works that have been provided by the courtesy of artists, Ukrainian museums, and private galleries.“Artists who record the overstrain of the present leave behind the artifacts for future cultural archaeologists. Socially engaged artists practice art because they understand the urgency of the situation, but even those artists who claim that they do not address the theme of war demonstrate the opposite in their works. It is this zone of conscious and subconscious artistic influence that creates the environment of this book.” — Olesya Gerashchenko (Shambur)
