Polysituatedness
A poetics of displacement
by John Kinsella
This book is concerned with the complexities of defining 'place', of observing and 'seeing' place, and how we might write a poetics of place. From Kathy Acker to indigenous Australian poet Jack Davis, the book touches on other writers and theorists, but in essence is a hands-on 'praxis' book of poetic practice. The work extends John Kinsella's theory of 'international regionalism' and posits new ways of reading the relationship between place and individual, between individual and the natural environment, and how place occupies the person as much as the person occupies place. It provides alternative readings of writers through place and space, especially Australian writers, but also non-Australian. Further, close consideration is given to being of 'famine-migrant' Irish heritage and the complexities of 'returning'. A close-up examination of 'belonging' and exclusion is made on a day-to-day basis. The book offers an approach to creating poems and literary texts constituted by experiencing multiple places, developing a model of polyvalent belonging known as 'polysituatedness'. It works as a companion volume to Kinsella's earlier Manchester University Press critical work, Disclosed Poetics: Beyond Landscape to Lyricism.

THE MYSTERIOUS TUNNEL ON BASEL STREET
A Thriller for Young Readers
by Pnina Ophir
The story is set in a typical old-timers’ neighborhood in central Tel Aviv. For several decades, the neighborhood contained a firehouse and an emergency medical center, as well as a colorful open-air market. But one day, the character of the street changes completely: Bulldozers begin tearing down the buildings, which are to be replaced by two modern multistory houses and a paved public square. A group of sixth-graders living in the neighborhood discovers that, in addition to the construction company's excavations, another private excavation is under way. It transpires that a pair of criminals decided that the noise and commotion in the area provided a one-time opportunity to unearth a mysterious "treasure chest" that was buried under the old firehouse long ago. The children’s curiosity and courage ultimately lead to the capture of the criminals moments before the chest is found, which in turn solves the mystery. A second book in this series, named The Magician from Motzkin Boulevard has already been written and a Hebrew-language edition will be published later this year. 96 pages, full-color hardcover with B/W illustrations inside, 15X22 cm

AXIOMS of Marketing, The
The 6 Invariable Propositions That Underlie and Determine Every Marketing Success
by Robert W. Bly
Laws are broken. Rules get bent. The premiere book in the exciting new line that puts a foundation underneath your efforts! In The AXIOMS of Marketing, you have 6 undeniable truths about marketing, what they can do, and how to implement them in your marketing for maximum results. Laws are broken. Rules get bent. AXIOMS [ak-see-uhms] –noun 1. statements or propositions that are regarded as being established, accepted, or self-evidently true 2. the sublime and intrinsic facts of a subject that form the foundational underpinnings upon which one can build unbounded and limitless success. The Premiere Book in the Exciting New Line That Puts a Foundation Underneath Your Efforts! The AXIOMS of Marketing are Marketing Effectiveness Is Not Subjective Likeability ‡ Effectiveness High Accuracy = High Results Lead Quality = 1/Lead Quantity Knowledge Is Finite Emotion > Facts In The AXIOMS of Marketing, you have 6 undeniable truths about marketing, what they can do, and how to implement them in your marketing for maximum results. The axioms work virtually all the time, and when you defy one or more of the axioms, your marketing results invariably falls short of the mark. What’s the difference between a rule and an AXIOM? A rule is a guideline to follow that has a strong probability of yielding the expected result. An AXIOM is an immutable law which can be violated only under the most extraordinary circumstances if at all. The value of having these AXIOMS written out for you is I think obvious, but in case not, let me state it plainly: By obeying these AXIOMS, and making your promotions conform to them, you can substantially improve your marketing results. Conversely, when you ignore all or even one of these marketing axioms, you risk poor results and monetary losses. One other advantage of mastering and following these 6 AXIOMS of marketing is that they, unlike marketing technology and channels, are immutable and do not change over time. “The same principles of human desire and methods of influence that guided the markets of ancient Greece are still operating today,” writes Craig Simpson and Brian Kurtz in their book The Advertising Solution. “In order to get people to do what you want them to do, you have to understand what motivates them. You also have to know how to prevent yourself and your product to get their interest, their trust, and ultimately their willingness to call you, visit you, or send you their money.” What You’ll Learn in The AXIOMS of Marketing Why you should avoid making marketing decisions based on subjective judgment. The 25-50-25 rule of testing marketing variables. 14 A/B split tests worth doing. How to make your marketing tests statistically valid. Do ads consumers find entertaining outsell other ads? Across Great Divides
by Monique Roy
Across Great Divides is a timeless story of the upheavals of war, the power of family, and the resiliency of human spirit. When Hitler came to power in 1933, one Jewish family refused to be destroyed and defied the Nazis only to come up against another struggle—confronting apartheid in South Africa. The novel chronicles the story of Eva and Inge, two identical twin sisters growing up in Nazi Germany. As Jews, life becomes increasingly difficult for them and their family under the Nazi regime. After witnessing the horrors of Kristallnacht, they realize they must leave their beloved homeland if they hope to survive. They travel to Antwerp, Belgium, and then on to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, chasing the diamond trade in hopes of finding work for their father, a diamond merchant. Finally, they find a home in beautiful South Africa and begin to settle down. But just as things begin to feel safe, their new home becomes caught up in it’s own battles of bigotry and hate under the National Party’s demand for an apartheid South Africa. Eva and Inge wonder if they will ever be allowed to live in peace, though they cling to the hope for a better day when there will be “an understanding of the past, compassion for all humanity, and …hope and courage to move forward across great divides.” Worldwide rights are available for this novel. I would like to sell Across Great Divides in Europe, Africa and Asia. The readership for Across Great Divides are history buffs, both female and male, and all ages, from late teens through adult.

Showtime in Cleveland
The Rise of a Regional Theater Center
by John Vacha (author)
This work takes the reader from the city's first professional theatrical presentation in 1820, through the heyday of vaudeville, to the grand reopening of the newly renovated Allen Theater in 1999 and the return of touring Broadway shows to Cleveland. In 1820 Cleveland was able to draw a visit from a troupe of professional actors. With no theater in which to perform, the troupe made do with Mowrey's Tavern on Public Square. As the city grew, theater blossomed and vaudeville flourished. In the early 1920s, five magnificent theaters opened at Playhouse Square—the State, the Palace, the Hannah Theater, the Ohio, and the Allen. Cleveland was also in the vanguard of the “little theater” movement with the establishment of the Cleveland Play House and the interracial Karamu Theater. After a period of decline in the 1960s and 1970s, live theater was reborn in Playhouse Square, which is now the second-largest performing arts complex in the country.

Theory, Analysis, Plays, Cases, Poems, Prose, and Speeches

This book, although targeting educational leaders, - teachers, school-based administrators, superintendents, board members, policy makers and education students, is also addressed to those interested in the topic of ethics and those who seek the development of an ethical awareness and an appropriate intellectual processes when facing ethical issues. In particular, the book uses both deductive and inductive methods to provide the reader with a progressive experience of ethical discernment and analysis in order to deal with and prepare the reader to address ethical issues in the public square - a task which requires that such decisions are rational, defensible, and clearly articulated. Institutional leaders' diligence and integrity requires no less in attaining and sustaining the support of those they must lead in and through the institutional decisions and policies which effect constituents' lives. Through the use of clearly stated definitions, the presentation of ethical schools of thought, cases, original plays - within which readers are encouraged to engage while in a safe learning environment - and references to poems, movie, and video clips, the book provides a lively and challenging approach to studying the topic of ethics.

The Merchant of Bullshit
by J.D.B.
A rotting gene has infiltrated mankind’s cognitive process at an advanced level and turned it into gibberish. Moreover, the Dronzyme, an integral part of the Detox Unorthodox advocated by major forces in the Consultancy Sector, actively stimulates the production of this gene via a benign mucous in the larynx. Soon, under the auspices of the Catallus Group, a new language and functionality possesses the mindset, and no one is considered immune. The Capital itself becomes a repository for degenerate ideas and concepts, whose terror becomes flesh with the birth of a quasi-physical oaf. Herein is the awful truth of the Schnimp, and the Corporate Giants now forced to obey its commands... in a unprecedented wave of NONSENSE. The explanation: The Merchant of Bullshit is a satire on the City of London, and its all-pervading, meaningless jargon, part of the global war against intelligence, as documented by someone who worked nights for over 15 years immersed in it. The author: (location unknown) lives in a shed in Myrddin’s Precinct where he communes with drunken spirits and entities, and launches vitriolic assaults against the Satanic Inertias of the Capital, soon to be revisited in The Gnat. A series of endless night-shifts in the Ancient City of London drives him to the terrifying conclusion that its entire existence is a Hoax – a bankrupt Government, media and economy imprisoned in a Tower of Babble. But can a man certified as insane – twice – complete his mission to rescue the intellectual heritage of his Nation? Who knows. For now, he sleeps amid the empty quarts and flasks, waiting to spring forth from his chrysalis...

Respectably Catholic and Scientific
Evolution and Birth Control Between the World Wars
by Alexander Pavuk
Respectfully Catholic and Scientific traces the unexpected manner in which several influential liberal-progressive Catholics tried to shape how evolution and birth control were framed and debated in the public square in the era between the World Wars-- and the unintended consequences of their efforts. A small but influential cadre of Catholic priests professionally trained in social sciences, Frs. John Montgomery Cooper, John A. Ryan, and John A. O’Brien, gained a hearing from mainline public intellectuals largely by engaging in dialogue on these topics using the lingua franca of the age, science, to the near exclusion of religious argumentation. The Catholics’ approach was more than just tactical. It also derived from the subtle influence of Catholic theological Modernism, with its strong enthusiasm for science, and from an inclination toward scientism inherited from the Progressive Era’s social science milieu. All three shared a fervent desire to translate the Catholic ethos, as they understood it, into the vocabulary of the modern age while circumventing anti-Catholic attitudes in the process. However, their method resulted in a series of unintended consequences whereby their arguments were not infrequently co-opted and used against both them and the institutional church they served. Alexander Pavuk considers the complex role of both liberal religious figures and scientific elites in evolution and birth control discourse, and how each contributed in unexpected ways to the reconstruction of those topics in public culture. The reconstruction saw the topics themselves shift from matters considered largely within moral frameworks into bodies of kno

Investigating Christian Privilege and Religious Oppression in the United States
by Blumenfeld, W. J.
Today, the United States stands as the most religiously diverse country in the world. This diversity poses great challenges as well as opportunities. Christian denominations and their cultural manifestations, however, often function to marginalize, exclude, and deny members and institutions of other religions and non-believers the privileges and access that accompany a Christian affiliation. Christianity is the privileged religious perspective in the United States since Christian groups, people, and organizations often have the power to define normalcy. Christian privilege comprises a large array of benefits that are often invisible, unearned, and unacknowledged by Christians. At times overt while at other times more subtle as Christian religious practice and beliefs have entered the public square, the clearly religious meanings, symbolism, positionality, and antecedents of these practices and beliefs betray claims to mere secularism. The effect of the so-called “secularization” of Christian religious practices and beliefs not only fortifies, but strengthens Christian privilege by perpetuating Christian influence in such a way as to avoid detection as religion or circumvent violating the constitutional requirements for the separation of religion and government. Christian dominance, therefore, is maintained often by its relative invisibility. With this invisibility, privilege is neither analyzed nor scrutinized, neither interrogated nor confronted. Investigating Christian Privilege and Religious Oppression in the United States addresses Christian privilege as well as religious oppression since the two are in symbiotic relationship: oppression toward non-Christians gives rise to Christian privilege in the United States, and Christian privilege maintains oppression toward non-Christian individuals and faith communities. This anthology also provides historical and contemporary cases exposing Christian privilege and religious oppression on the societal, institutional, and personal/interpersonal levels. A number of chapters include sections suggesting change strategies, and in particular, ways to achieve the national goal of religious pluralism in the United States.

REVENGE OF THE GENERALISSIMO
by Tang Chen-Wei
* The Weeping Angels of Dr. Who get a Taiwanese facelift, with zombies thrown in for good measure * Adapted into comic book Does the Generalissimo Dine on Human Flesh? President and generalissimo of Taiwan for decades, Chiang Kai-Shek is honored with bronze statues that occupy nearly every school, park, and public square on the island. But when the statues are toppled as a form of protest, the horrifying paranormal creatures that inhabit them are awakened! Recently unemployed, Liu Shih-Yen is convinced by an old colleague to join a metaphysical workshop. Guided by the workshop leader, Liu Shih-Yen has a near-death experience involving a vision of a bronze statue rushing towards him. Watching the news at home after class, he sees an old veteran protesting the removal of a Chiang Kai-shek statue from a park — not on the grounds that the Generalissimo was a great man who should be honored, but due to his belief that something malevolent resides inside the statues. After series of paranormal incidents, Liu Shih-Yen decides he must visit the park from the news story. There, he finally catches a glimpse of the horrific creatures that animate the bronze statues. Fainting in terror, he enters another visionary trance. Now convinced that knowledge of the creatures’ existence is being publicly suppressed, Liu Shih-Yen joins a secret organization that is working to understand and eliminate the paranormal threat. While they succeed in halting the first wave of attacks, a second wave takes them by surprise, unleashing an entire army of Bronze Generalissimos on Taiwan’s unsuspecting population! The author’s inspiration for these unique monsters came from a common legend in Taiwan — that if you watch closely, you can catch the statues of Chiang Kai-shek blinking! Operating on multiple levels, Revenge of the Generalissimo provides thrills and entertainment, while also serving as a vehicle for the complex emotions surrounding one of Taiwan’s most divisive historical figures.

Why I can't like him/her?
by Anna Claudia Ramos, Antônio Schimeneck
Adolescence is a time of many doubts, anxieties and uncertainties. In this phase, sexuality is unfolding, and we are going through — because everyone has gone, is going or will go through — self-questions about all conditions, all desires, including regarding sexuality. If on the one hand, we see in beautiful social networks beautiful movements of self-acceptance and discovery, on the other hand we live in a time of great obscurantism and attempt to cage the desires and contain the experiences of young people – whether at home or at school, and unfortunately, many times, with public authority initiative. This book asks this of young people, who often find themselves trapped by a cultural need (or family pressure) to create heteronormative bonds, when, in fact, they feel the desire for people of the same sex. But this book also understands that it is necessary to take this issue to the world, so that everyone reflects on otherness, sexuality and, mainly, the many possibilities of affection and desire. Por que não consigo gostar dele/dela? is a book with two sides, two covers, four stories and many testimonials.
