      • I Follow The Voices of Soft, Quiet Goddesses

        by Hugo Roca Joglar

        There is an idea by D.H. Lawrence: 'we are the secret dreams of our grandmothers.' But not the dreams they openly accepted and pursued, rather the secret dreams: those they denied, and merely thinking about them plunged them into fear and guilt. This Hugo Roca's definitive exploration of this concept: It begins with the death of his grandmother and ends with the imminent birth of his daughter, and in between, he narrates his struggle to establish a different flow, where through a process of re-educating himself (which leads to confront the most horrible demons of his lineage), he seeks to stop lying and to have no more secrets: to decipher his hidden dreams so as not to pass on the curse of embodying them to his daughter. A narrative that redefines parenthood and embarks on a profound quest for new forms of beauty.

        Nadadores

        by María José Ferrada, Mariana Alcántara

        There might be many swimmers for sure who, after training so much during the day (“50 meters of Front Crawl, 50 meters of Back and 50 meters of Butterfly”) at night they dream about being fish. But during those same nights, when the moon illuminates the oceans, will fish dream about being swimmers? The authors of this book use humor and poetry to show us that a page can be a deep sea or an Olympic-size swimming pool, depending on the eyes with which it is looked at.

        Sleep and its spaces in Middle English literature

        Emotions, ethics, dreams

        by Megan Leitch

        Middle English literature is intimately concerned with sleep and the spaces in which it takes place. In the medieval English imagination, sleep is an embodied and culturally determined act. It is both performed and interpreted by characters and contemporaries, subject to a particular habitus and understood through particular hermeneutic lenses. While illuminating the intersecting medical and moral discourses by which it is shaped, sleep also sheds light on subjects in favour of which it has hitherto been overlooked: what sleep can enable (dreams and dream poetry) or what it can stand in for or supersede (desire and sex). This book argues that sleep mediates thematic concerns and questions in ways that have ethical, affective and oneiric implications. At the same time, it offers important contributions to understanding different Middle English genres: romance, dream vision, drama and fabliau.

        Sigmund Freud's The Interpretation of Dreams

        by Laura Marcus

        Freud's The Interpretation of Dreams, published in 1900, has been one of the most influential texts of the modern era, fundamentally changing the ways in which people have thought about their waking lives as well as their dreams. This book, more than any other in Freud's massive oeuvre, has shaped a vast amount of work in linguistics and semiotics, literary studies, film theory, psychology, philosophical hermeneutics and the history of ideas. This influence is reflected in the editor's introduction, which includes a substantial discussion of the theory and practice of representation, and the six essays specially commissioned for this volume. The contributors are renowned for their knowledge of Freudian theory and for their interdisciplinary expertise in a wide range of fields. They examine, for example, the relationship of Freud's text to theories of interpretation, autobiography and literary production. The book as a whole gives a clear sense both of the context of Freud's text and of its influence throughout the twentieth century. This volume is an ideal introduction to Freud's work for students and teachers of English and other literatures, philosophy and social and cultural studies, as well as the wider audience concerned with psychoanalysis and its cultural ramifications. ;
