Panenka
We were born more than ten years ago as a monthly paper magazine, with the experience that this entails in public distribution. The central theme of our magazine is football, but always with an eye on culture, politics and society, and treated from slow journalism. Three years ago, we started publishing books with the same philosophy: football as a theme, but in contact with many other edges. We've already published eight books, three every year. Among the books there is variety: novels, history, journalism, biographies, Spain, England, Africa... We keep a geographic variety.

May 2020Argentina in times of pandemic: the Spanish flu of 1918-1919. Read the past to understand the present

The coronavirus outbreak allows us to establish a certain analogy with a disease that - in its most virulent stage - has caused the largest number of deaths during the 20th century. This virus, known as the Spanish flu, has also sparked multiple initiatives on health and responses in different spheres and social scales. It would have begun to develop in Texas (United States) and with the movement of troops during the Great War it spread to Europe. Later - during 1918 and 1919 - it reached all corners of the world and its impact in terms of mortality on a global scale was devastating: it is estimated that between 30 and 50 million people would have died, with some estimates reaching up to 100 million. In these epidemiological transition, we invite readers to analyse the role of the press, public policies, attacks on the governments, medical discussions, marketing and others facts that the Spanish flu brought with it more than a hundred years ago and so does today, in its own way, the coronavirus.

This book does not pretend to be a calm evaluative work, it is rushed by the pulse of the situation, its writing emerges in the heat of the moment, set on a reality that moves and jumps, without a clear direction, but with the need to contribute to the emergence of that clarity. And it is also an attempt to help, rehearsing answers, the unexpected needs of this unexpected time of ours. Because a community, totally and unprecedentedly confined in its private environments, with social distance, areas surrounded by sanitary barriers, and communication methodologies mediated almost exclusively by computer screens and cell phones, requires propositional ideas and critical reflections that collaborate in its understanding of a universal problem, and in the ways and modalities in which we will emerge from it to a new normal. The uncertainty that comes with that necessary but painful social isolation, has also brought with it the longing for guiding readings and reflections on the variables that are profoundly, and perhaps forever, altering our daily lives and our environment.

The invited and silenced young people are the example of the smoke screens that are created in the information of the disaster, for example with the Greta Thunberg phenomenon. Under the slogan Uniting the world to tackle climate change, the next United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) — held in Glasgow (United Kingdom) from November 1 to 12, 2021— brought together representatives of around 200 governments with the aim of accelerating climate action to comply with the Paris Agreement. In a recent article, Alejandro Quecedo pointed to the disappointment of a large part of the activist sector, after learning about the withdrawal of permits and funding for citizen and scientific initiatives, with the excuse of not "excessively politicizing the summit", a fact to which was added the leak to the media that certain lobbies had pressed to amend the latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), in order to deny the evidence of an increasingly imminent catastrophe and blind public opinion with half-truths, sweetened. The author has been interviewed by the most important media in Spain, all interested in his position: to ask for a change of sensitivity in order to stop the eco-social crisis.
