        Gebürtig

        Roman

        by Robert Schindel

        The Buddies

        by Qin Wenjun

This volume is short, the language is simple and fluent, and it tells the naughty story of "I" (Zhu Duoxing) and cousin Xiaosha in a first-person perspective. Zhu Duoxing and his cousin Xiaosha are in the same class, and they are messing around all the time. But Xiaosha has really bad luck, because his name sounds like "Xiaosha", which means "little dumb". Unlike the usual stories of little troublemakers, these stories are told from the standpoint of troublemakers. For example, watering the flowers and grass downstairs with a shower nozzel, and spray graffiti on the walls, etc. When female writer writes a boy story, you can feel how the boys are both naughty and dashing at the same time, which fully demonstrated the writer's solid writing skill. You will read the reason for every trick or trouble they make. Looking at the world of adults from the child's perspective, it is hard to tell if the child is ridiculous or the other way around. According to Qin Wenjun, many of the stories of these two little troublemakers evolved from the actions of her two younger brothers. Those are some remarkable naughty days, full of fun and innocence.

        Kilroy was here

        Ein immerwährender Kalender

by Hans Magnus Enzensberger, Kat Menschik

        Femicide

        Violence against women

        by Julia Cruschwitz, Carolin Haentjes

In Germany, 132 women were murdered by their (ex-)partners over the past year, according to police statistics. An attempted murder happened every other day – the real figure is in all probability much higher. Julia Cruschwitz and Carolin Haentjes unveil their book on femicides in Germany with research from interviews with academics, criminologists, police officers, social workers, lawyers, survivors, witnesses and relatives and their analysis of scientific reports. Their work highlights how the issue of femicides affects the whole of society, but there are sensible ways to protect women more effectively from male violence. All we must do is take steps to follow these.

      • DESPERATELY SEEKING BOWIE

        by Ian Castello-Cortes

No one is bigger than Bowie. From the moment he created Ziggy Stardust, through all his subsequent incarnations, to his elegantly curated, but tragic, death, he remains the ultimate music icon. Desperately Seeking Bowie gets right under the skin of his extraordinary life, following him from modest beginnings in surburban south London, through the outrageous orgiastic partying of the 1970s, to his near death from Cocain addiction in LA, the intensely creative period in Berlin, to his astounding re-emergence after Glastonbury in 2000. What a journey. With a great insightful text, great photos and fascinating maps, this is a 100% must for any Bowie fan – old or young (and there are tons of the latter).

      • DESPERATELY SEEKING VAN GOGH

        by Ian Castello-Cortes

A totally fresh look at the life and career of Van Gogh. The Desperately Seeking treatment is a great way to get a quick sense of the shape of Vincent's extraordinary life, and dispels many of the myths. By any measure he was a bit random. Educated privately by his very respectable parents, he spent time training to be an art dealer, became a teacher in Ramsgate and London when that failed, turned crazily to religion, went and lived as a quasi-preacher in the most depressed part of Belgium, enjoyed a spell at art school in Paris (when his prostitute habit was financed by his long-suffering brother) headed to the south of France – the period of the yellow house and the ear – before spending his final years, when his paintings did begin to be celebrated, in bucolic bliss just north of Paris. He was also probably killed accidentally as a result of a teenager's prank with a revolver – not the suicide which so many specialists have suggested, such is the sentimental view of him. Wonderful Van Gogh art and photos throughout and fascinating maps.

      • DESPERATELY SEEKING DALÍ

        by Ian Castello-Cortes

Dali gets the Desperately Seeking treatment and it's fascinating. The upper-middle class, but very provincially Catalan, background; the possibly abusive priests at school; his time at the Oxbridge of Madrid as a student, holding his talentless teachers (compared to him) in contempt, but developing his surrealist ideas with Bunuel and Lorca. Meeting Gala in Paris, whilst hob-nobbing with the mega rich. The wealthy British patrons, like Edward James, who fell in love with him in London, and his escape from a war-torn Europe to spend time on both East and West Coast USA. It's a grippng story, and the locations surprising, not least as despite his mega wealth, he followed a cycle of his Dalinian year once back in Europe: Cadaques, Paris, New York and back. And in the midst of this the prodigious work-rate of a genius, but one who was uber succesful and commercially hyper-astute. And threaded through all this, his strange sado-massochistic-voyeuristic sexuality, and a tormented, in later life, open marriage with Gala. Castello-Cortes packs a huge mount into this small volume – a total treat for all Dali fans, or the most perfect introduction to his art for new aficionados. Great photos and maps throughout.

        Gunfire-Graffiti

Overlooked Gun Crime in the UK

        by Matt Seiber (Author)

Hitherto uncovered crime — which is being ignored by police and authorities; A book on a completely new aspect of crime and punishment; As featured on BBC Radio, and in national and local newspapers; Colour photo section. Gunfire-Graffiti looks at the use of firearms to deface roadside structures and similar targets in public places. Based on investigations by the author and formal research, the book reveals what some people may think is a disturbing picture of gun use—one which passes largely unnoticed or is for some reason downplayed by the police, highways and other authorities. As the author shows, at the very least this kind of ‘graffiti’ is antisocial whilst it is hard to imagine circumstances in which it is not also criminal. Further, there are situations in which shooting in public can be highly dangerous. Focusing on the weapons used, from simple airguns to high velocity rifles and giving information from diverse parts of the UK, Matt Seiber paints a picture of tolerated Lawlessness which some readers will find extraordinary. A former Royal Marine and keen shooting sportsman, the author writes with the passion of someone whose deep-held concern that something is amiss has met with indifference in various quarters. His approach also displays telling humour born of frustration. It is now for the reader to decide.
