Cleaning Up the Environment, Revised Edition

        Hazardous Waste Technology

        by Anne Maczulak, Ph.D.

Praise for the previous edition: "...valuable...a welcome addition for use in classroom studies and for those considering a career in the field."—School Library Journal The industrial might of the United States grew in the 1930s and flourished during the two world wars. As businesses large and small supplied the needs of the country, they discarded their wastes in landfills, pits, and waterways. It was an easy and inexpensive way to get rid of wastes before more were made. Waste dumping had not yet been linked with illnesses so few people worried about it, especially if the materials were hidden under the ground or in the ocean. Within 20 years of the end of WWII, those wastes began to cause serious health problems. Featuring full-color photographs and line illustrations, Cleaning Up the Environment, Revised Edition explores current and emerging methods in pollution cleanup. Hazardous wastes are removed from contaminated places by physical, chemical, or biological methods, and these methods are described here as well as their advantages and disadvantages. This eBook takes readers through the entire step-by-step process of finding, testing, and cleaning up hazardous waste sites, beginning with contamination assessment and ending with a cleaned and restored body of land or water. Chapters include: Measuring Contamination Excavation of Contaminated Sites Microbes and Plants for Toxic Cleanup Oxidation Technology Brownfield Sites Remediating the Water Supply Superfund Sites.

Farm Animal Medicine and Surgery for Small Animal Veterinarians

        by Graham R Duncanson

Small animal veterinarians are increasingly taking on caseloads that include farm animals, with cases being presented by local hobby farmers, smallholders, and 'novelty pet' owners. With the increase in veterinary telemedicine, they now also receive requests for advice electronically from owners further afield. Recognising this trend, this book provides a quick reference for small-animal orientated veterinarians in the basics of surgery and treatment of farm animals. Popular animals such as cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, camelids and backyard poultry are covered, and basic techniques such as anaesthesia, clinical examination techniques, breeding, surgery and euthanasia are discussed. This new edition: - Expands on recent developments in all areas of medicine and surgery, covering advances such as the increased use of ultrasound across species and adding a new section on anthelmintics. - Provides updates on current major disease threats, as well as providing a One Health perspective. - Includes full colour images to help bring the subject to life. Ideal for looking up information during a consult, or for use as a refresher guide and continuing professional development resource, this book is an important tool for veterinarians in small and mixed practices.

How the Cherry Orchard Was Cut Down, or the Long Road from Bad Ems

        by Oksana Zabuzhko

This book commemorates Oksana Miyakovska-Radysh (1919–2020), a long-term archivist of the Ukrainian Free Academy of Sciences (UVAN) in New York. Her greatness lies in serving her cause with absolute freedom from complexes imposed by Russia and its culture. Reading this book is like flipping through an old family album in Miyakovska-Radysh's company. The book reveals numerous secrets. It turns out that Chekhov's Three Sisters were not just a figment of the writer's imagination. Moreover, Chekhov himself was a young man from then Ukrainian Taganrog, fond of his native Ukrainian language, theatre and one of the three sisters. The book also explores the connection between the "new woman" in Russian literature and the 19th-century Ukrainian women's movement and looks into the past mistakes that still have repercussions for Ukrainians today.

        Audio Engineering

for special events techniciansin training and on the job

by Christoph Grzesinski. Founded by Dr. Volker Smyrek

We all know that audio engineering is more than just acronyms. But what do they all mean? This practical textbook is designed to meet the special needs of events technicians. The textbook stands out from the crowd because it is designed specifically with the university curriculum and professional needs in mind, making it not only an excellent companion in the classroom, but a useful reference for on the job as well. The author, himself an instructor for special events technicians, covers the ground from physical fundamentals of acoustics and electronics to setting up mixing consoles and sound systems, providing a multitude of useful tips without confusing the reader with extraneous details. A chapter on video technology rounds off the book. Sample calculations put the material in a practical context, and sample problems at the end of each chapter (with solutions in the appendix) help review what has been learned and inspire further thought. Entertaining guest essays provide a broader perspective.

        'The industrialized designer'

Gender, identity and professionalization in Britain and the United States, 1930-80

        by Leah Armstrong

What does it mean to be called an industrial designer? This book traces the remarkable rise of this professional identity in historical perspective from a position of anonymity in the early twentieth century, to mid-century professionalisation, to decline and disintegration by 1980. Drawing on new, extensive, original archival research, it uncovers the history of a profession in a state of re-invention, 1930-1980 in Britain and the United States. The book tests assumptions about the relationship between the professions in the two countries, bringing them into comparative historical perspective for the first time. The gendered dynamics of professionalisation and their interaction with the representation of the heroic male designer are interrogated and critically examined. Building on new gender perspectives to the history of the industrial design profession, the book calls for a re-examination of the limits and boundaries of what constitutes professional identity and work.

        A Room of One's Own

        by Virginia Woolf

May the Loveforce Be With You

Kali-Ki Reiki: Healing Through Divine Mother & Yogic Wisdom

        by Rajashree Maa

May the Loveforce Be With introduces a new lineage in energy healing, Kali-Ki ReikiTM, that was revealed to the author, Joni Dittrich, Ph.D. (Rajashree Maa), in a series of mystical encounters with the Divine Mother appearing as the goddess Kali Maa. The book brilliantly tells the stories of these encounters and presents the healing symbols that She revealed, explaining how these symbols can be used both for mind-body healing and spiritual awakening, or what Rajashree Maa calls "wisening." While traditional reiki systems also use symbols to transmit healing energy, the symbols introduced in Kali-Ki Reiki are seen as unique, three-dimensional, active, intelligent forms of light that tap into certain universal energy frequencies that are particularly attuned to the evolving conscious awareness as well as the personal and societal dilemmas of our current times. The fact that these symbols were revealed by Divine Mother to a woman in this era points to a need in today's world to re-establish our connection with the feminine forces of nature and spirit. The healing energy transmitted through these symbols is called Loveforce, which is considered to be the manifesting, creative, and healing power of the Limitless Love that is the Source of all that is.

        HERON’S WAY

        by Do Taij Mogul

The hero’s story is told in an ancient, secret chronicle... A white falcon flew across the Eternal Blue Sky. His flight was long and beautiful, binding together the patchwork of lands; his life was full of victories and defeats. Soaring high, then falling like a stone, the falcon darted from place to place. He threaded his way from the colored Jin Empire to that of the daring Naimans; from the lands of the Karakitai Khanate to the territories of the rebellious Tangut; from the highlands of the warlike Taichuds to the floodplains of the unruly Tatars.... From north to south, from east to west, no man or beast in the world knew what the falcon was really like: how his heart ached; how fears clutched his chest; what nightmares visited his sleep; what treacherous winds lurked at every takeoff of his daily journey—a journey from nothing to everything. But as he flew, paying for his power over the world with his loneliness, the world was falling to pieces. When the falcon ceased flying, the Great Destruction came, and only the memory of the people for him kept the Mongol flame burning across the centuries—all while people went about their daily routines, and did all the unbearable and great things that give man his destiny...

        Epicene, or The Silent Woman

        by Ben Jonson

        by Richard Dutton

        Epicene is now one of the most widely-studied of Johnson's plays. Brilliantly exploiting the Jacobean convention whereby boys played female roles, it satirises the newly fashionable and sexually ambiguous world of the West End of London, where courtly wit rubs shoulders with commercial values. This authoritative new edition, now in paperback, is based on a thorough re-examination of the earliest texts. The introduction analyses the play as originally written for the newly formed Children of the Queen's Revels, and performed at the little-known Whitefriars Theatre. Dutton discusses the composition of the play, which took place during a critical period in Jonson's life and career, when he was established as the principal writer of entertainments at the court. His relationships at this time, with ambitious wits such as John Donne, Sir Edward Herbert and the actor Nathan Field, are examined as models for the principal characters. This challengingly historicised text of Epicene will be essential reading for all serious students of early modern drama. ;

        Linn’s Light

Ein Mutmach-Buch für Kinder mit einer Depression

by Mira Rzany, Leonie Heindel, Lukas Maelger, Alina Senßfelder

Linn lives in the land of lights. Everyone who lives there carries a light within them that changes color depending on how he/she feels. Lately, Linn’s parents have been arguing a lot and her school grades are going down. Linn goes out less and less, and she spends a lot of time alone in her room. Her inner light is almost always only grey. This book aims to help children affected by depression understand their current situation. It shows them they are not alone and how they can overcome their depression. The book provides important information on this topic for children, their parents, siblings, and therapists as well as practical tasks and exercises. Werke

Werke 6: Die Stücke 4. Bearbeitungen für Theater, Film und Rundfunk

by Heiner Müller, Frank Hörnigk, Kristin Schulz, Christian Hippe, Ludwig Haugk, Ingo Way
