        Stories as Stones

        Violence of World War II

        by Antonio Riccio

The work collects the results of an ethnographic research carried out by a museum (Museo della pietra) in Ausonia, on the memory of the Second World War, which in this place – also known as the “land of martyrology” – is still a living memory. The area of Monti Aurunci still constitutes a widespread museum rich in archaeological and ethnographical sites, and cultural itineraries. Ethnography brings to this vast heritage, both intangible and material, an educational contribution of knowledge and reflection: by proposing an interpretative reading of the local memory of the war, it offers matter for critical knowledge and ethical commitment, in order not to forget, without however falling into resentment.

        What Were You Wearing?

Words in Criminal Trials for Gender-based Violence

        by Iacopo Benevieri

Words are the mirror of a society, especially when they describe relationships between men and women. This also happens in courtrooms. What stereotypes are hidden behind certain terms? What patriarchal views are enclosed in seemingly polite questions? Can silence be an instrument of communicative domination? The book, which investigates some mechanisms of linguistic power and is aimed at anyone who employs words in institutional and professional contexts, highlights the importance and the need of a conscious use of language, so that words are an instrument of rights.

        Prozac

        The Pill of Happiness

        by Andrea Pamparana

This book faces an issue concerning millions of individuals, recounting cases of depression affecting both common people – who got in touch with the author during his journalist experience – and well-known personalities. Here we find Nietzsche, according the reports by the psychiatrist Irvin Yalom; Hemingway, who committed suicide even though he had success, talent, women and a Nobel Prize; Robin Williams, a versatile actor, a celebrity, and died by his own hand too. Prozac, a blessing and a curse for the modern man: on one side for those who don’t want to suffer and don’t consider acceptable a suffering caused by an illness which can’t be touched, palpated, surgically removed; on the other side for artists, who once used opium to find inspiration, and nowadays, instead, use drugs. This book isn’t and doesn’t want to be a j’accuse against antidepressant drugs: the aim is to shed light on an obscure and dangerous disease, and to show a photograph of real world.

        The Identity of Places

For an Intercultural and Anti-Racist Education

        by Mariangela Giusti

Is it possible to transmit a culture of equality and educate new generations in intercultural thinking and anti-racism? The book has a twofold value: a self-training tool for teachers, thanks to theoretical references, descriptions and interviews, and a teaching tool, thanks to the thirteen cards created for students. To counteract the indifference and racism circulating among adolescents, the work faces the theme of the identity of places - public parks, markets, old houses, bowling alleys - demonstrating that the construction of identity and anti-racism also pass through culture of the territory.

History of the Jewish Community of Rhodes

        (1912-1947)

        by Marco Clementi

When the Italians occupied the island of Rhodes in 1912, the local Jewish community had a centuries-old history behind it. After a short time, its members adapted to the new condition and became mostly convinced Italians and sympathizers of the fascist regime. The bond of trust was suddenly broken in 1938 by the racial laws, which upset the life of the kehilà. Many Jews were expelled, others migrated. Those who remained felt safe, but after 8 September 1943 the Italian administration collaborated with the Nazi occupier, participating in the deportation of the entire community, which took place in July 1944.

        Environment

        A Global History

        by Federico Paolini

Environmental history is the study of humans’ interactions with nature over time. The book presents - through three paths, placed in a global perspective (analysis of transformation factors; evolution of ecological reflections; trajectories of environmentalism) - an analysis of the complex change caused by human activities. The study focuses on the 20th century and the first twenty years of the 21st century, that is the historical time during which the scale of environmental problems reached such a size as to generate widespread alarm for the survival of homo sapiens on Earth.

        Communico

        Languages, Images, Algorithms

        by Mario Ricciardi

The book traces a wide-ranging overview of communication: a cultural dimension in which different knowledge converges and merges. The author takes into consideration numerous voices – from McLuhan to Barthes, from Pasolini to Castells, just to name a few – to analyse, first, the processes of civilization from the alphabet to digital technology and to show, then, how the media system takes over society and how, in the age of mass consumption, the critical role of public opinion is weakened by market and advertising. Finally, attention shifts to the leap that leads to our days: the algorithm is the pervasive and dominant technology, the personalization operated by digital communication produces new forms of individual mythologies.
