Description
When the Italians occupied the island of Rhodes in 1912, the local Jewish community had a centuries-old history behind it. After a short time, its members adapted to the new condition and became mostly convinced Italians and sympathizers of the fascist regime. The bond of trust was suddenly broken in 1938 by the racial laws, which upset the life of the kehilà. Many Jews were expelled, others migrated. Those who remained felt safe, but after 8 September 1943 the Italian administration collaborated with the Nazi occupier, participating in the deportation of the entire community, which took place in July 1944.
