Playbills are popular display items, especially when they concern famous opera and theatre performances, and they have always been an important source for research on programming. Interest in playbills has increased in recent years. A survey of this development was taken by the Don Juan Archive in Vienna in 2012 with the first volume of the series Bibliographica, entitled Theatre ¬– Playbills – Collections: Indexing, Digitalization, Research. The secod volume in this series, Theatre ¬¬– Playbills – Collections 2: Inventories, Indexing, Research, continues to explore the medium of playbills. At a time when digitalization projects are being undertaken in many places, replacing “Digitalization” with “Inventories” is not a conservative move but a reaction to the limits of even the best state-of-the-art digitalization projects. Two contributions open new perspectives for the cost-efficient exploitation of playbills by means of the efficient processing of collections and the advanced machine processing of digitalized playbills. In addition, this richly illustrated volume contains studies in the theatre history of rare playbills and programs from the seventeenth century and illustrated announcements from the nineteenth century, along with thirteen presentations of playbill collections in German, Serbian, and Czech archives, libraries, and museums, together with texts addressing aspects of the work flow of digitalization and long-term preservation.
