Saving Little Red Riding Hood
by Claudine Bernardes, Graziela Eskelsen and Ana Barbosa
Description
The Fearsome Wolf lives hidden among us.
Would you like to help Little Red Riding Hood?
This book tells the simple yet profound story of a girl facing a problem and ultimately finding the support she needs to overcome it. The authors skillfully use the timeless archetype of the big bad wolf, employing a classic narrative structure woven from real phrases spoken by children the authors have assisted. It refrains from offering explicit instructions or moral lessons, and you won't find the term "sexual abuse" explicitly mentioned in its pages.
This story serves as a powerful tool to shed light on a critical issue and, more importantly, to encourage those who may have experienced similar situations to share their stories and seek help. Every child has the fundamental right to grow up in an environment characterized by respect, where their innocence is preserved.
This fairy tale goes to the heart of so many wounded and silenced girls and boys, it encourages them to speak: it is time to tell their stories, to look for those who will listen to them.
It reminds us that hope accompanies us even in the worst moments, bringing a ray of light to that dark forest; It shows us that there is a path to finish that pain and towards freedom.
This illustrated album addresses, in a symbolic way, violence, mistreatment and children sexual abuse.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one in five girls and one in thirteen boys are sexually abused before the age of 17. Sexual abuse, especially inflicted during childhood, condition the future mental, sexual and physical health of a person; in many cases, they remain secret even in adulthood.

The Brazilian authors Claudine Bernardes and Graziela Eskelsen, with their expertise in preventing criminal situations such as the one addressed in this work, utilize an archetypal character from children's literature, Little Red Riding Hood, to shed light on an issue that requires immediate action when the first signs are detected. In the first person, a girl narrates her fears and concerns regarding a family member whom she identifies with another typical character from fairy tales, the Big Bad Wolf. This family member is capable of acting affectionate and cunning, depending on the situation, in order to achieve sinister objectives. Through metaphor, the book also provides a solution: to speak up, report, and expose the case to friends, adults, and specialized organizations. Alongside the text, the publisher includes a comprehensive teaching guide, which can assist educators in planning supplementary activities related to the book's reading or gaining more information about this serious issue. The visual aspect, created entirely using digital techniques, is the work of Ana Barbosa, an illustrator and fashion designer based in Scotland.

I had to read the book a couple of times to be able to shed my prejudices and immerse myself in its essence. It's a complex book that deals with a delicate subject.
At first glance, the title and the cover depict a frightened girl (closer to Perrault's Little Red Riding Hood than today's girls) trapped in the jaws of a wolf. I don't know how many publications feature Little Red Riding Hood in their title, but very few will have as much impact as Batidora Ediciones' cover. The endpapers show a sad forest where shades of gray try to take over every hint of color, and a shadow of... a wolf... And on the first page, black engulfs everything, except for Little Red Riding Hood's sad gaze and the words that start the story:
"I'll tell you my story, and I hope you can listen before my voice disappears, and I disappear with it." Saving Little Red Riding Hood
Here, Little Red Riding Hood is at her home, in an environment that should be safe for her, but we see her filled with fear, fear of a wolf in human skin who watches her, stalks her, approaches her, who... This book is designed to stir emotions. On one hand, it's for people who have experienced abuse, to encourage them to share their pain, and on the other hand, it's for others to understand how these situations arise and how to detect them.
Written in uppercase letters, little text on each page so that the images convey the message that adults read between the few lines accompanying that pain. Full-page illustrations with flat colors, barely any shine, everything in a matte tone; using white to depict emptiness and red for malevolence.
Furthermore, they have prepared comprehensive materials with all the symbolic information from the story, activities, information on sexual abuse, and how to respond when a child asks for help.
