Valerie Yip is a baker from Kuala Lumpur who constantly challenges herself. She enjoys developing innovative cakes and participating in local and foreign cake competitions from time to time to challenge her skills and learn more.
Rich and mellow chocolate cake might be very popular with everyone, but it holds a special place in Valerie’s heart. When she was a child, her mother especially attended a baking course and made the first chocolate cake in her life for them to taste. Her mother had never tasted chocolate, but she was willing to learn for the sake of her children. The moment she ate the cake, Valerie tasted more than its delectable flavour, she also tasted happiness.
In 2011, Valerie became a mother. She had been thinking about making cakes for her child during her pregnancy, hoping to make healthy, delicious and beautiful cakes, so that this feeling of happiness can be passed down form generation to generation. In addition, when she was pregnant, she was craving an unforgettable chocolate cake in a coffee shop that she ate when she was child. When she went back to find it, she found that the coffee shop had been closed for many years. This regret led her to recreate her own chocolate cake of the same taste. By tapping into her memory of taste, she kept trying to make the cake but her attempts were futile. After 20 failed attempts, she finally made a chocolate cake that was 90% similar to her dream cake. At that point, she believed that the remaining 10% could be the unique production method and experience of the coffee shop owner.
Valerie holds a Bachelor of Phonology(Honours), but due to her passion in baking, she has learnt from many teachers and completed the professional Master in Baking and Cake Decorating Course, and has since immersed herself in the baking field. Valerie’s custom-made cakes have accumulated a following, and most of her customers are local celebrities and businessmen.
On 2016, she founded Val Bakery Studio and Val Academy. In 2018, she started a new trading company Val Enterprise. Through these companies, she hopes to share with more people on how to make all kinds of desserts so that everyone will be able to taste cakes filled with happiness.
