        Ritual und Gewalt

        Ethnologische Studien an europäischen und mediterranen Gesellschaften

        by Thomas Hauschild

        Noch in den 1980er Jahren galten religiös motivierte Rituale hierzulande als vom Aussterben bedrohte Spezies, als archaische Reste von bestenfalls folkloristischem oder unterhaltungsindustriellem Interesse, die in einer globalisierten, hochtechnisierten und zunehmend säkularisierten Welt keine Bedeutung mehr haben würden. Zwanzig Jahre später hat sich diese Situation gründlich geändert. Alte Rituale leben weiter, neue werden erfunden, importiert oder drängen aus anderen Weltgegenden nach Europa hinein. Gewaltexzesse, die scheinbar von außen in die westlichen Gesellschaften einbrechen, erweisen sich häufig als rituell grundiert und haben ihre europäischen Resonanzen und Gegenstücke. Angesichts dessen entwickelt Thomas Hauschild eine neue Sicht auf Rituale und deren Zusammenhang mit Ressentiment und Gewalt. Jenseits von Idealisierung und Dämonisierung, von "aufgeklärtem Westen" und "rückständigem Orient", von postkolonialem Denken und Wissenschaftsgläubigkeit versteht er Rituale als im Kern politisch neutrale Grenzphänomene an den Rändern textlich überlieferten Wissens, die weniger mit abstrakten politisch-religiösen Überzeugungen zu tun haben als mit den konkreten Lebensbedingungen der Menschen. Hauschild setzt daher auf die Mikroanalyse lokaler ritueller Praktiken und präsentiert höchst anschauliche ethnologische Studien europäischer Gesellschaften und des Mittelmeerraums. Die "Kultur" von Al Qaida wird ebenso untersucht wie die der sizilianischen Mafia, der "Ehrenmord", der "böse Blick" sowie andere magische und religiöse Riten und Fetischismen. Rituale erweisen sich dabei als wertvolle Kulturgüter, die nicht per se Nährboden für Fundamentalismen und Sektierertum sind, sondern aus denen sich wie aus anderen Kulturformen auch gleichermaßen gewalttätige wie friedfertige Konsequenzen ziehen lassen.

        Love's Sacrifice

        by A. T. Moore

        A. T. Moore's thorough commentary on "Love's Sacrifice" is designed to be of use to all kinds of readers, from students of Early Modern drama to specialists in the field. The notes provide full explanations of obscure words and phrases, and offer analyzes of many aspects of staging and interpretation. The text for this edition is based on a fresh study of the quarto of 1633, the only authoritative early text. In his introduction to the play, Moore reappraises the evidence for the play's date of composition. He also looks at the circumstances of the play's genesis, presenting detailed discussions of both the theater where "Love's Sacrifice" was first performed and the acting company for which it was written. Arguing that Ford's adaptation of his source materials is the key to interpreting this remarkably allusive play, Moore provides a wealth of new information about Ford's sources.The introduction also includes a survey of critical responses, an overview of the play, stage history, and a bibliography of relevant secondary material. This new volume in the "Revels Plays" series is the most detailed and comprehensive edition of "Love's Sacrifice" ever published - and the first modern-spelling edition of Ford's tragedy in more than a century. The play's textual history is discussed in an appendix. A second appendix examines possible links between "Love's Sacrifice" and the real-life story of the murdered Italian prince and musician Carlo Gesualdo. ;

        Iraqi women in Denmark

        Ritual performance and belonging in everyday life

        by Marianne Holm Pedersen, Alexander Smith

        Iraqi women in Denmark is an ethnographic study of ritual performance and place-making among Shi'a Muslim Iraqi women in Copenhagen. The book explores how Iraqi women construct a sense of belonging to Danish society through ritual performances, and investigates how this process is interrelated with their experiences of inclusion and exclusion in Denmark. The findings refute the all too simplistic assumptions of general debates on Islam and immigration in Europe that tend to frame religious practice as an obstacle to integration in the host society. In sharp contrast to the fact that the Iraqi women's religious activities in many ways contribute to categorising them as outsiders to Danish society, their participation in religious events also localises them in the city. Written in an accessible, narrative style, this book addresses both an academic audience and the general reader interested in Islam in Europe and immigration to Scandinavia. ;

        Religious Tourism and Globalization

        The Search for Identity and Transformative Experience

        by Darius Liutikas, Razaq Raj, Vitor Ambrósio, Silvia Aulet Serrallonga, Caglar Bideci, Mujde Bideci, Elzbieta Bilska-Wodecka, Dino Bozonelos, Nour Farra-Haddad, Stephen F. Haller, Jaffer Idris, Antonietta Ivona, Isilda Leitão, Dimitrios Mylonopoulos, Polyxeni Moira, Eleanor O’Keeffe, Spyridon Parthenis, Donatella Privitera, Ricardo Nicolas Progano, Alison T. Smith

        Is it possible to identify the positive and negative effects of globalization on religious tourism or to estimate the transformation of the internal and external constructs of pilgrimage by these effects? In order to address these questions, this book highlights the importance of the search for identity and transformative experience during religious tourism. It also looks at how, recently, globalization has played a part in the changes of the concept of personal and social identity and the transformative experience of pilgrimage. The chapters, consisting of carefully selected case studies, analyse possible effects including the adoption of different new rituals, new pilgrims' values, changes of tradition, acceptance of technologic innovations, development of new business models, and other environmental and sociocultural changes. The book provides: · a conceptual framework for understanding the impacts of globalization; · integrated cross-disciplinary approaches; and · an insight into major religious travel practices in the age of identity challenges and worldwide transformations. It will be suitable for researchers and students of religious tourism, pilgrimage, identity tourism, as well as related subjects such as sociology, anthropology, psychology, theology, history and cultural studies.

        Pilgrims: Values And Identities

        by Darius Liutikas, Ali Thompson, María Ángeles Piñeiro Antelo, Pedro Azevedo, Derek Dalton, Luciana Thais Villa Gonzalez, Rubén C. Lois-González, Luis Alfonso Escudero Gómez, Rami K Isaac, Elyor E. Values-rich journeys can be described as pilgrimage, spiritual travel, personal heritage tourism, holistic tourism, and valuistic journeys. There are many motivations for undertaking values-rich journeys; the most important including personal values, personal and social identity, life experience, lifestyle, social and cultural influence. The main types of pilgrim journeys are traditional religious or spiritual journeys as well as secular journeys related with the expression of national, communal or personal identity, e.g. the journeys of sport and music fans. The manifestation of personal and social identity has different forms and rituals and constitutes different models of a specific behaviour. The journeys are often embraced as potential instruments for life altering experiences. This book presents contributions that address pilgrim motivation, identity and values as they are shaped by the broader sociological, psychological, cultural and environmental perspectives. With a focus on travellers themselves and their inner world through the lens of their pilgrimage. The research presented focuses on the typology of pilgrim journeys as ways in which identity and values are presented to a post-modern consumer society, providing interesting and challenging perspectives on the identity of pilgrims in the 21st century.

        Al borde de la boca

        Diez intuiciones en torno al mate

        by Carmen M. Cáceres

        Many books have been written about mate—its properties, benefits, history, and ritual. Al borde de la boca, however, intuits what none of those books consider: the firsthand experience of drinking mate. It is an experience of both body and mind, better evoked through literature than through scientific vocabulary. Sensitive and precise, this essay captures that experience and puts it into words without ever exhausting its private, personal dimension.

        Rebel angels

        Space and sovereignty in Anglo-Saxon England

        by Jill Fitzgerald

        Over six hundred years before John Milton's Paradise Lost, Anglo-Saxon authors told their own version of the fall of the angels. This book brings together various cultural moments, literary genres and relevant comparanda to recover that version, from the legal and social world to the world of popular spiritual ritual and belief. The story of the fall of the angels in Anglo-Saxon England is the story of a successfully transmitted exegetical teaching turned rich literary tradition. It can be traced through a range of genres - sermons, saints' lives, royal charters, riddles, devotional and biblical poetry - each one offering a distinct window into the ancient myth's place within the Anglo-Saxon literary and cultural imagination.

        A sacred city

        Consecrating churches and reforming society in eleventh-century Italy

        by Louis Hamilton, Steve Rigby

        The so-called Investiture Conflict was a watershed moment in the political life of the Latin West and the history of the papacy. Occurring at a time of rapid social change and political expansion, the eleventh-century reform movement became a debate centered on a ritual: the investment of bishops with the signs of their sacred and secular authority. The consecration of bishops, however, was only one of several contemporaneous conflicts over the significance of consecrations. Less well known is that which occurred over the dedication of churches. This book provides an examination of the consecration, placing the fundamental questions of the Gregorian Reform and Investiture Conflict back into their original liturgical framework. This context allows us to consider the symbolic richness of the liturgy that attracted large numbers of people. ;

        A Harvest Truce

        by Serhiy Zhadan

        Brothers Anton and Tolik reunite at their family home to bury their recently deceased mother. An otherwise natural ritual unfolds under extraordinary circumstances: their house is on the front line of a war ignited by Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine. Isolated without power or running water, the brothers’ best hope for success and survival lies in the declared cease-fire - the harvest truce. But such hopes are swiftly dashed, as it becomes apparent that the conflagration of war will not abate. Serhiy Zhadan’s A Harvest Truce stages a tragicomedy in which the commonplace experiences of death, birth, and the cycles of life marked by the practices of growing and harvesting food are rendered futile and farcical in the wake of the indifferent juggernaut of war.

        Rethinking untouchability

        The political thought of B. R. Ambedkar

        by Jesús F. Cháirez-Garza

        This book examines the transformation of untouchability into a political idea in India during the first half of the twentieth century. At its heart is Ambedkar's role and the concepts he used to champion untouchability as a political problem. Ambedkar's main objective was to comprehend the numerous avatars of untouchability in order to eradicate this practice. Ambedkar understood untouchability beyond aspects of ritual purity and pollution by stressing its complex nature and uncovering the political, historical, racial, spatial and emotional characteristics contained in this concept. Ambedkar believed the abolition of untouchability depended on a widespread alteration of India's political, economic and cultural systems. Ambedkar reframed the problem of untouchability by linking it to larger concepts floating in the political environment of late colonial India such as representation, slavery, race, the Indian village, internationalism and even the creation of Pakistan.

        Court and civic society in the Burgundian Low Countries c.1420–1520

        by Andrew Brown, Graeme Small, Rosemary Horrox, Simon Maclean

        This volume is the first ever attempt to unite and translate some of the key texts which informed Johan Huizinga's famous study of the Burgundian court, The Waning of the Middle Ages, a work which has never gone out of print. It combines these texts with sources that Huizinga did not consider, those that illuminate the wider civic world that the Burgundian court inhabited and the dynamic interaction between court and city. Through these sources, and an introduction offering new perspectives on recent historiography, the book tests whether Huizinga's controversial vision of the period still stands. Covering subjects including ceremonial events, such as the spectacles and gargantuan banquets that made the Burgundian dukes the talk of Europe, the workings of the court, and jousting, archery and rhetoric competitions, the book will appeal to students of late medieval and early modern Europe and to those with wider interests in court culture, ritual and ceremony. ;
