This child tells us that he is not happy with the head that he has. He thinks it is a wrong head. The parents, after listening to him, take him to a specialist, who agrees with the little one. A mysterious man dressed in black supplies him with heads in exchange for his own. The child tries several, until he finds the one he was looking for. A reindeer head, a crocodile head, a whisk head: the narrator child and protagonist of this story tells us about his disagreement with the head he has and the vicissitudes that he has to go through to find the head with which he will finally agree: the head of a grown man, of a mathematician. This is a story of search for identity and growth, developed with fine fantasy and humor, with the wisdom of someone he has sought and perhaps already found.

History's Carnival

A memoir and autobiography of Ukrainian mathematician Leonid Pliushch (1939-2015), one of the most famous dissidents of the USSR. It was first published in the West in 1979 in five languages (Russian, French, English, Italian and Ukrainian) and it belongs to the "treasury" of anti-totalitarian resistance literature. Analyzing his life path from his postwar childhood to the Dnipropetrovsk psychiatric prison, where he was thrown with the beginning of repressions in 1972, Leonid Pliushch creates an invaluable panoramic portrait of the generation of "sixties", which was given a chance to free their mind from authoritarianism. The text is presented in the author's edition of 2002 with appendices and foreword by Oksana Zabuzhko.

—300th birthday of Tobias Mayer in February 2023 — The rediscovery of a great scientist — A chapter in the fascinating history of science The story of Tobias Mayer's life (1723 to 1762) is that of a child prodigy and orphan who became a pioneer of the Enlightenment as a cartographer, mathematician, physicist and astronomer. Having never been to university, at the age of 28 he was appointed a professor in Göttingen by the Elector of Hanover and King of England. He revolutionised cartography with his zeal and skill, helping sailors to find the right path across the seas and providing people with the firstever clear view of the moon. 17th February 2023 marks the 300th anniversary of the birth of Tobias Mayer. High time to recall this prototype of a scientist.

Developing a 21st Century Global Library for Mathematics Research

Like most areas of scholarship, mathematics is a cumulative discipline: new research is reliant on well-organized and well-curated literature. Because of the precise definitions and structures within mathematics, today's information technologies and machine learning tools provide an opportunity to further organize and enhance discoverability of the mathematics literature in new ways, with the potential to significantly facilitate mathematics research and learning. Opportunities exist to enhance discoverability directly via new technologies and also by using technology to capture important interactions between mathematicians and the literature for later sharing and reuse. Developing a 21st Century Global Library for Mathematics Research discusses how information about what the mathematical literature contains can be formalized and made easier to express, encode, and explore. Many of the tools necessary to make this information system a reality will require much more than indexing and will instead depend on community input paired with machine learning, where mathematicians' expertise can fill the gaps of automatization. This report proposes the establishment of an organization; the development of a set of platforms, tools, and services; the deployment of an ongoing applied research program to complement the development work; and the mobilization and coordination of the mathematical community to take the first steps toward these capabilities. The report recommends building on the extensive work done by many dedicated individuals under the rubric of the World Digital Mathematical Library, as well as many other community initiatives. Developing a 21st Century Global Library for Mathematics envisions a combination of machine learning methods and community-based editorial effort that makes a significantly greater portion of the information and knowledge in the global mathematical corpus available to researchers as linked open data through a central organizational entity-referred to in the report as the Digital Mathematics Library. This report describes how such a library might operate - discussing development and research needs, role in facilitating discover and interaction, and establishing partnerships with publishers.

This book reviews the evaluation research literature that has accumulated around 19 K-12 mathematics curricula and breaks new ground in framing an ambitious and rigorous approach to curriculum evaluation that has relevance beyond mathematics. The committee that produced this book consisted of mathematicians, mathematics educators, and methodologists who began with the following charge: Evaluate the quality of the evaluations of the thirteen National Science Foundation (NSF)-supported and six commercially generated mathematics curriculum materials; Determine whether the available data are sufficient for evaluating the efficacy of these materials, and if not; Develop recommendations about the design of a project that could result in the generation of more reliable and valid data for evaluating such materials. The committee collected, reviewed, and classified almost 700 studies, solicited expert testimony during two workshops, developed an evaluation framework, established dimensions/criteria for three methodologies (content analyses, comparative studies, and case studies), drew conclusions on the corpus of studies, and made recommendations for future research.
