      • Jill Marshall Books

Jill Marshall is the author of the popular middle-grade series about Sensational Spylet, Jane Blonde, and many other titles and series for tweens, teens, YA and adult.   Jill’s books have been published by Macmillan Children’s Books, Penguin and Hachette, in 22 countries, 11 languages and paperback, ebook and audio formats. Jane Blonde has been optioned for film and TV, with significant film interest in other Jill Marshall titles. Jill has also been an editor and manuscript assessor for trade publishers and societies, a creative writing teacher for over 1000 clients, and works in corporate communications.   During lockdown in 2020, and with all rights for all titles successfully re-acquired, Marshall fulfilled two long-term ambitions. The first – to create an independent publishing house of her own titles, rebranded and re-imagined for a digital world. The second – to pull together Jane Blonde and three other ‘superhero’ characters, all with their own origin series, into an ensemble series, S*W*A*G*G (swaggbooks.com). The third ambition was one that she couldn’t have foreseen: the wish to provide quality fiction for tween readers and upwards, in readily accessible digital formats and for free, in a world ravaged by a global pandemic.   In May 2020, Jill Marshall Books was born, and all three ambitions met. JMB has gathered momentum and fandom during those months, and it’s now time to partner with like-minded book people – innovative, passionate, caring – to extend the reach of JMB titles across formats, locations and media. Welcome to Jill Marshall Books. We look forward to connecting at Frankfurt 2020.

        Tyler's Lunchbox Treat

Book Four in the Tyler, the Rabbit series

        by Author/illustrator M. C. Abushar, Ed.D.

Tyler, the Rabbit, woke up one morning feeling very refreshed and alert. A sweet aroma was spreading through the air in his bedroom.  He concluded right away that this was the appetizing scent of freshly-baked krispy-marshmallow squares that his mother was baking for him. This was his most favorite treat. It smelled so good that he wanted to have one as soon as his mother had finished baking them.  When they were ready to eat, it was time for him to go out to the school bus stop.  The story here creates suspense as Tyler waits with anticipation all morning for the school lunch break.  The conflict in this episode develops when Tyler discovers that the lunchbox of his companion was missing.  This issue, according to Tyler, had only one good solution, since he couldn't share his peanut-butter sandwich with his friend, who was allergic to peanuts. After Tyler gave away his krispy marshmallow square while feeling good that his friend wouldn't go hungry that day, he still had the craving to eat one of them himself. The story concludes happily but with some turns after Tyler goes home after school and find his dad having some squares at the kitchen table.

        The Admiral's Baths

        by Dana Gynther

The Admiral’s Baths is composed of four inter-connected stories, each told from the perspective of a different woman in her own time period.  The story opens as a contemporary historian conducts research at the baths, making discoveries which lead us back in time. History unfolds through the stories of the struggles, desires, tragedies, and triumphs of these four protagonists. Although they are separated by hundreds of years, we find that what connects them is more powerful than the passage of time. The Admiral’s Baths (102,300 words) revolves around an actual monument in Valencia, Spain, a medieval public bathhouse which was open for nearly seven centuries and is now a museum.  Some years ago, I translated several articles about the monument, covering its history, owners, architecture, and restoration. I became fascinated with the subject, and was particularly struck by its longevity. The Baths’ long history became an integral part of the story; instead of choosing one moment in the Baths’ – and Spain’s—history, I chose four: the 14th, 16th, and 19th centuries as well as the 21st.

Essay on Philippine Food and Culture

        by Doreen G. Fernandez

Doreen Gamboa Fernandez represents “the compleat writer” – her incisive yet soulful writing, coupled with her keen understanding of the Filipino’s culture and psyche, has brought her (and us fortunate readers) into the very essence of Filipino cooking. According to her, “Writing about food should not be left to newspaper food columnists, or to restaurant reporters. It should be taken from us by historians of the culture, by dramatists and essayists, by novelists, and especially by poets. For it is an act of understanding, an extension of experience. If one can savor the word, then one can swallow the world.”
