Don Ignacio Duri Palomeque: Stories of a Shaman in the Peruvian Amazon" is the story told by the very voice of master ayahuasca and healer Ignacio Duri Palomeque. In this hybrid text, which mixes testimony, the learning manual and the anecdotal, our character narrates his life story from the first decades of the 20th century, with his arrival in Peru from the Bolivian Amazon; his experience as a shiringuero in the rubber era, a decisive moment when he first learned about Ayahuasca and began his training in shamanism; and his arrival in the native community of Infierno, where he currently lives and has been practicing as a shaman for more than 40 years. The stories that build this text were compiled over a decade, through audio recordings in daily conversations with some of his apprentices. The chapters of the book converge between stories of his intimate life, Ayahuasca ceremonies, secrets, and a wide knowledge of medicinal plants endemic to the Peruvian Amazon and the worldview of the Amazon culture".

"Understanding earth systems and its dynamic behavior requires objective insights into the complex observational data sets and their interrelationships. Drawing meaningful inferences from such data is not always an easy task as the deterministic relationships between various geological variables often remain obscured. These interrelationships need to be determined empirically through the analysis of a large set of data and validated through numerical simulations. The ever widening horizon of techniques of numerical analysis and simulation now provides a good number of tools to aid the interpretation. However, due to the inherent complexity of earth science data, expert supervision is required at all stages of analysis from collection to dissemination. This ensures that the most appropriate methodology is adopted and the results remain consistent with the geological principles. Discussions on these practical issues often lie beyond the scope of textbooks and this is precisely where this book is placed. In this book eminent geoscientists present their experiences in analyzing and managing earth science data as well as in designing numerical models to simulate earth processes. Apart from giving a discourse of their own approach towards a particular research problem they also discuss at length the relative merits of alternative methodologies. These seven authoritative articles, richly illustrated, will be a valuable resource for research students and professionals interested in research and teaching in various branches of earth science like, tectonics, GPS geodesy, sedimentology, geographical information science, and evolutionary biology."

Emilie’s only ray of hope is the prospect of her beloved mother visiting them in the holidays. By the time her parents finally return, Emilie is twelve years old The family settles down in Paris where, beneath the surface of an apparently serene bourgeois existence, the true hell begins. The idolised mother turns out to be a manipulative and violent monster. Emilie tries to protect herself from the toxic relationship between her parents by plunging herself into her studies and by playing the piano. Very gifted, she does well in her piano competitions and a successful career beckons… until the day when her mother deliberately burns her hand on the eve of a major competition. Meanwhile her brother, who has been diagnosed with dyslexia, is struggling at school. The father for his part is entirely indifferent and ends up abandoning the family home. The violence goes on for several years, and whereas Emilie is in constant revolt, her brother Jean-Baptiste sinks into a depression that no one picks up on. The vicious circle seems to be unending until a dramatic incident occurs, whereupon Emilie leaves her mother and agrees to go to boarding school. She will not see her mother again until twenty years later in the old manor house where she has not set foot since childhood.
