        Before Babylon, Beyond Bitcoin

From Money that We Understand to Money that Understands Us

        by Birch, David

Technology is changing money: it has been transformed from physical objects to intangible information. With the arrival of smart cards, mobile phones and Bitcoin it has become easier than ever to create new forms of money. Crucially, money is also inextricably connected with our identities. Your card or phone is a security device that can identify you – and link information about you to your money. To see where these developments might be taking us, David Birch looks back over the history of money, spanning thousands of years. He sees in the past, both recent and ancient, evidence for several possible futures. Looking further back to a world before cash and central banks, there were multiple ‘currencies’ operating at the level of communities, and the use of barter for transactions. Perhaps technology will take us back to the future, a future that began back in 1971, when money became a claim backed by reputation rather than by physical commodities of any kind. Since then, money has been bits. The author shows that these phenomena are not only possible in the future, but already upon us. We may well want to make transactions in Tesco points, Air Miles, Manchester United pounds, Microsoft dollars, Islamic e-gold or Cornish e-tin. The use of cash is already in decline, and is certain to vanish from polite society. The newest technologies will take money back to its origins: a substitute for memory, a record of mutual debt obligations within multiple overlapping communities. This time though, money will be smart. It will be money that reflects the values of the communities that produced it. Future money will know where it has been, who has been using it and what they have been using it for.

        Land of Tornadoes

        by Melanie S. Wolfe

The dustbowl is back, Frackheads roam the lawless streets, and one family plots to take down the oil company that caused it all.   They were supposed to be the next Kennedys, each adopted Wilson teen prepared for a specific political office, but when their father, CTO of Colossal Oil is falsely accused of stealing from the company after he publicly voices his concerns about the recent return of the dustbowl and fracking chemicals leaking into the drinking water and its correlation to the current outbreak of Frackheads (people who drink tainted water and become psychopaths and roam the roads with one mission, to kill for fun) the family’s focus goes from the future to a hacking revenge operation. However, the eight kids are getting burned out and want to move on with their lives. After their night off in OKC, and a series of unfortunate events, the once unified Wilson clan struggle to keep themselves alive and their beautiful, unique family together while John, their father crumbles under the weight of a secret about their adoptions.   From the author: At the time I wrote this novel I was binge-watching Mr. Robot and we were experiencing a lot of earthquakes in Oklahoma. So much that my kitchen tile floor formed a speed bump three feet long over the course of a weekend. The locals wouldn't dare implicate fracking or the holy oil companies for fear of losing jobs. Yet the New York Times and several other credible sources pointed the finger at fracking. I had wanted to write a book that was somehow inspired and influenced by The Outsiders and The Grapes of Wrath and this was my opportunity. However, I didn't want to write about the stereotypical poor people who were victims of their oppressors. I wanted strong characters who could give the elites a true punch in the gut.

        Easy Money

Cryptocurrency, Casino Capitalism, and the Golden Age of Fraud

        by Ben McKenzie, Jacob Silverman

From a famous actor and an experienced journalist, a wildly entertaining debunking of cryptocurrency, one of the greatest frauds in history and on course for a spectacular crash At the height of the pandemic, TV star Ben McKenzie (The O.C., Gotham) was the perfect mark for cryptocurrency: a dad stuck at home with some cash in his pocket, worried about his family, armed with only the vague notion that people were making heaps of money on something he—despite a degree in economics—didn’t entirely understand. Lured in by the promise of taking power from banks, possibly improving democracy, and sure, a touch of FOMO, McKenzie dove deep into blockchain, Bitcoin, and the various other coins and exchanges on which they are traded. But after scratching the surface, he had to ask, “Am I crazy, or is this all a total scam?” In Easy Money, McKenzie enlists the help of journalist Jacob Silverman for a caper and exposé that points in shock to the climactic final days of cryptocurrency now upon us. Weaving together stories of average traders and victims, colorful crypto “visionaries,” Hollywood’s biggest true believers, anti-crypto whistleblowers, and government agents searching for solutions at the precipice of a major crash, Easy Money is an on-the-ground look at a perfect storm of 2008 Housing Bubble–level irresponsibility and criminal fraud potentially ten times more devastating than Bernie Madoff.

        TO THE MOON

        by Jang Ryujin

TO THE MOON is centered around three young women in their thirties working mundane jobs at a snack manufacturer. Despite coming from different departments, they bond over their similar backgrounds of humble origins, being considered average performers, and lacking prestigious positions. The story follows Eun-sang, the eldest of the group, who constantly seeks ways to earn extra money but faces trouble for her office mini mart. Jisong, the youngest, dreams of a perfect romance with her Taiwanese boyfriend and spends her low salary on trips to Taipei. The narrator, Dahae, works in the Snacks department and endures an incompetent team leader while struggling to support her injured mother and find a better apartment.During a lunch gathering, Eun-sang excitedly reveals her discovery of Ethereum, a cryptocurrency rivaling Bitcoin. She invests her savings, hoping to make enough money to quit her job. Intrigued, Dahae opens an account, while Jisong remains skeptical. As the Ethereum price fluctuates, Dahae and Eun-sang’s friendship evolves, causing tension with Jisong. Despite threats of breaking up, Dahae and Eun-sang desperately want to share their newfound wealth with Jisong. And then, China outlaws crypto ICOs (Initial Coin Offerings), and the market crashes......The title, TO THE MOON, symbolizes Eun-sang’s belief that they should hold on until Ethereum’s price skyrockets. Set in modern Seoul, the novel explores class divisions, gender inequality, and unattainable wealth. It unfolds with a thrilling pace akin to a heist movie, delving into the complexities of female friendship and materialistic desires. Jang aims to create a bittersweet experience, akin to consuming excessive sugar—initially sweet, but with an aftertaste that lacks pleasantness.

        The Disobedient

        by Joona Keskitalo

A highly addictive story of a ruthless climb to the top of the drug game.   The Disobedient is the first season in a series of crime novels set in the world of drug trafficking and a story about a group of friends, where everyone looks after their own best interests first. TV and film rights already sold.   PETE: An impulsive marketing start-up entrepreneur Pete thinks he has a unique idea for a facial recognition marketing software, but he needs significant investment to turn his vision into reality. Things begin to go sour when he loses one of his most important clients and they also publicly shoot down Pete’s idea. The worst thing, however, is that Pete had “borrowed” some money from his wife to cover the company’s expenses. He is neck deep in trouble.   MAX: The owner of an ailing workwear company Once a fiddler, always a fiddler, Max will sell seconds at best quality prices whenever possible. Max is still the same shameless opportunist he was back in school with only one thing on his mind – money. The problem is that he is so much better at spending than making money.   JOONAS: A skilled but stand-offish lawyer A strategic thinker with a keen analytical mind, Joonas is good at problem solving. If only it were not for his colleague Elli who repeatedly takes credit for all of Joonas’ hard work, he would have already been promoted. However, the feeling of power he gets from the successful drug deals just might be the boost his confidence has needed all this time…   JESSE: a successful cybersecurity developer Jesse is a a devoted husband and father who, according to the others, was a real boy scout already back in school. He eventually agrees to join the gang only because Joonas also said yes, but his programming skills might not help him adopt the code of the streets.   BUSINESS IDEA To commercialize drugs into trendy stimulants. “Ten grams of Handpicked Joy and Laughter by The Local Dealer Company.”   In the recession-era Finland of the nineties, Pete, Max, Jesse and Jonas were known as The Company. They made pocket money by selling homemade pins and t-shirts, and, eventually, tobacco. Through Max’s Russian acquaintance they sourced cheap cigarettes and made sure that kids in their secondary school smoked more than in any other school in Helsinki. After school they parted ways …until twenty years later two of them meet by chance and their new business sees the light of day.   They quickly realise that drug trafficking in Finland is astonishingly rudimentary. The quartet put all their marketing, branding, and logistics skills to use and find new ways to effectively promote, sell, and distribute drugs on the dark web. The Local Dealer Company is born. However, there are other dangers in the drug trade than the unpredictability of consumer behaviour and the fluctuations of bitcoin price – the Russian mafia, for example. It is a long climb to the top of the drug trade. Always watch your back and never forgive.   The Disobedient is a thoroughly shameless story of selfish people, double standards, greed and cruelty.  A witty and funny page-turner, the novel will grab you from the start and not let go until you’ve turned the very last page, leaving you wanting more.
