Since the beginning Kästner's children's books are a world-wide success story and continue to fascinate readers in more than 25 countries all over the world. Es sind Traumstücke, Redepartikel, Prosagedichte, zerbrochene Sonette, Sequenzen wie aus Unfallprotokollen. Jedes dieser Stücke entzündet sein eigenes Leuchten, seine kleine oder größere Epiphanie. Hier schreibt ein Dichter, der keiner Schule angehört, keiner modischen Strömung – ein Beobachter des Realen, neugierig auf die diesseitigen Dinge, hellwach für ihr Verschwinden. Zwei Langgedichte ziehen mächtige Stützpfeiler in die Struktur der Sammlung – reine Anschauung einer südlichen Metropole: Das Photopoem, Elegie vom musealen Leben: Die Massive des Schlafs. Es gibt Liebesgedichte, erotisch direkt, ebenso wie Momente der Verlusterfahrung als Demontage der Sonettform.
