        Harnessing Dividends from Drylands

Innovative Scaling up with Soil Nutrients

        by K V Raju, S P Wani

The livelihoods of millions of people in developing countries, which depend on dryland agriculture to ensure their food security and their well-being, could be improved measurably by gains in agricultural crop yields. This book describes lessons learnt from an innovative scheme in India that improved crop yields in drylands. It shows how the scheme can be scaled up for other dryland regions of the world. The scheme uses localized soil nutrient analyses to create an integrated, climate smart fertilizer and planting plan that maximises yields for farmers. This book describes how a partnership between a global scientific organization (such as International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics, ICRISAT) and state and non-state actors can provide a route to equitable growth, specifically for small and marginal farmers, and how this approach can be replicated worldwide to enhance rural livelihoods. This strategic collaboration and its conceptual and functional design is fully outlined, as well as the scheme's implementation and the effective monitoring and learning process that has been created. ; This book describes lessons learnt from an innovative scheme in India that improved yields in drylands. Peacemaking in the Middle Ages

        Principles and practice

        by S. H. Rigby, J. E. M. Benham

Peacemaking in the Middle Ages explores the making of peace in the late-twelfth and early thirteenth centuries based on the experiences of the kings of England and the kings of Denmark. From dealing with owing allegiance to powerful neighbours to conquering the 'barbarians', this book offers a vision of how relationships between rulers were regulated and maintained, and how rulers negotiated, resolved, avoided and enforced matters in dispute in a period before nation states and international law. This is the first full-length study in English of the principles and practice of peacemaking in the medieval period. Its findings have wider significance and applications, and numerous comparisons are drawn with the peacemaking activities of other western European rulers, in the medieval period and beyond. This book will appeal to scholars and students of medieval Europe, but also those with a more general interest in kingship, warfare, diplomacy and international relations.

        Biotechnology Revolution in Global Agriculture

Invention, Innovation and Investment in the Canola Sector

by Edited by Peter W B Phillips, George G Khachatourians

Biotechnology processes are fundamentally changing the nature of the products being produced in the industry. Canola has been developed in Canada through such processes. It is a type of rapeseed that has an enhanced level of mono-unsaturated fatty acids, thus producing a healthier oil for human consumption. It is now being introduced to many other countries. This book reviews for the first time the global canola sector in order to identify fundamental trends resulting from the adoption of biotechnology. It examines the canola sector over an extended period, looking at:its local originsregional growth and international expansionanalyses of public policy affecting commercialisationestimates of the costs and benefits of changes. It is essential reading for government and industry researchers and students involved in the areas of agricultural economics, plant biotechnology and crop science.

The Girl with a Teddy Bear. Doctor Seraficus

        by V. Domontovych

This book contains two of the most famous works of V. Domontovych. One of them is an engaging and somewhat extravagant novel The Girl with a Teddy Bear that describes the love of a sagacious teacher and his rebellious student. The novel is also a brilliant example of intellectual prose about the changing cultural orientations and the tragic personal conflict of a person destined to live in the time of change. The second one is Doctor Seraficus. It is the story of a strange and infantile ascetic professor who preaches a peculiar sort of “Don Juanism in reverse”: the desire to love all women and denounce all of them simultaneously.

Bemerkungen über die Philosophie der Psychologie. Schriften. 8

Herausgegeben von G.E.M. Anscombe, G.H. von Wright und Heikki Nyman

by Ludwig Wittgenstein, Heikki Nyman, G. E. M. Anscombe, Georg Henrik Wright, G. E. M. Anscombe

Ludwig Wittgenstein wurde am 26. April 1889 als Sohn des Großindustriellen Karl Wittgenstein in Wien geboren und starb am 29. April 1951 in Cambridge. Thirst for Music

        by V. Domontovych

A secret agent of Soviet intelligence and a bohemian modernist, a Berlin-based professor and theologian, a man in a German officer’s uniform, and a recluse archeologist studying Trypillian culture — should someone write a fictionalised biography of Viktor Petrov, such a book would be no less than a page-turning spy novel. But while the government archives refuse to provide information about this extraordinary person, a new edition of Domontovych’s works opens up his world for readers. The book reflects describes the dramatic contrast of the time he lived in, raging emotions and lurking passions. Vincent van Gogh and Goethe, Rainer Maria Rilke and Vaclav Rzhevsky come to life in this novel. V. Domontovych's literary texts are vivid examples of twentieth-century intellectual prose that fascinate readers today.

by Edited by C Pankhurst, B Doube, V Gupta

Maintaining soil health is fundamental to successful crop production and ecosystem sustainability. To enable effective management soil health must first be measured and then monitored and so the authors review and evaluate how soil organisms can be used to fulfil this role. This book is essential for all soil scientists and consultants. It is of particular relevance to those involved in soil health monitoring and maintenance as well as those undertaking soil remediation. It is also important reading for agronomists, ecologists and environmentalists. This book is a comprehensive and effective resource for all those working to sustain healthy soils.

Temperature Adaptation in a Changing Climate

        Nature at Risk

by Edited by Kenneth B Storey, Karen K Tanino.

Temperature adaptation is a much neglected field in the minds of climate change researchers and policy makers. However, increasing fluctuations in temperature mean that the risk of cold and heat stress will pose an increasing threat to both wild and cultivated plants and animals, with frost injury expected to cause devastating damage to crops on an increasingly large scale. Thus, improving shared knowledge of the biological mechanisms of temperature adaptation in plants and animals will help prevent major losses of crops and genetic resources in the future.

        Quarantine Pests for Europe

by Mark Holderness, Edited by D G McNamara, I M Smith, Peter R Scott.

Data sheets on quarantine pests for the European Union and for the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization. This book is the result of collaboration between EPPO and CAB INTERNATIONAL, sponsored by the Commission of the European Union, to prepare data sheets on pests of plants of quarantine significance for Europe and the Mediterranean region. Coverage extends to insects, mites, fungi, bacteria, viruses, nematodes and parasitic plants. It includes organisms that are found outside Europe and the Mediterranean that present a risk to this region, as well as those that are present but have restricted distribution and are subject to phytosanitary controls. The format of the FAO model data sheet is followed, using standard headings: identity, hosts, geographical distribution, biology, detection and identification, means of movement and dispersal, pest significance (including economic impact, control and phytosanitary risk), phytosanitary measures, and bibliography. The first edition of this book was published in December 1992 and consisted of 188 data sheets, some covering groups of similar organisms. During the intervening four years pests have been added to the EU and EPPO lists and changes have occurred in host range, geographical distribution, taxonomy and pest status of many of the organisms described. All data sheets have therefore been revised, some data sheets covering groups of similar organisms have been split up and 56 new sheets added, resulting in a total of 300 data sheets. The second edition will continue therefore to represent a definitive reference source, not only for those with specific interests in plant quarantine, but also for all concerned with pest management.
