The book is a great responsibility, starting with its writing and making, through publishing and distributing it, and ending with acquiring and reading it, and in each of these cases, we need to be very careful of this responsibility. The author is primarily responsible for the subject and content of the book, an intellectual, emotional, literary responsibility, because the author who does not elevate his book to the reader in an ascending way, whether on the intellectual and emotional or literary and artistic levels, will constitute a scientific disappointment. The publisher is no less responsible for the author, the subject matter and the content, in addition to his responsibility for producing the book in a way that suits the book’s topic and importance. This is in addition to his media responsibility towards the book, so readers must be alerted and informed of the most creative methods and finest means about the book’s issuance, its importance and the importance of its topics, and enabling them to obtain and acquire it, and any failure to do so is a great disappointment. This book synthesises information on an important environmental problem - the invasion of natural ecosystems in Africa by alien Prosopis trees, and how they should be managed. It addresses how the problem came about, what we know about how it works, and how it can potentially be managed at different scales. The book has a focus on eastern Africa but includes studies from elsewhere. Prosopis trees were originally introduced to Africa as early as 1880 (in South Africa), and later to eastern Africa in 1917 (in Sudan). They are difficult to manage due to their ecological features, such as their ability to produce copious amounts of seed, and to compete successfully with native species for resources, but also because they have both beneficial uses and negative impacts, making them conflict species, where people disagree on goals for management and how they should be achieved. In eastern Africa, Prosopis juliflora invades rangeland, cropland, settlements and riparian ecosystems, causing negative impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem services that rural communities depend on. This book considers the perceptions and conflicting interests of different stakeholder groups, and how engagement can be used to co-design management strategies and implement concrete control measures. The book is therefore not only of interest to those working with this invasive tree species, but also to persons involved in policy development and management of other invasive species, or in the wider field of sustainable environmental management.

Von den frühen Zeugnissen aus der Kindheit, wie etwa einem bisher unbekannten Jugendtagebuch, das transkribiert und z.T. faksimiliert vorgelegt wird, über Dokumente aus seinen Studien- und Exiljahren bis hin zur Rückkehr nach Frankfurt und seiner Arbeit am Institut für Sozialforschung und an der Frankfurter Universität verfolgt der Band das Leben Adornos am Leitfaden von überaus anschaulichen, prägnanten, im besten Sinne »sprechenden« Zeugnissen. Neben einem weiteren Tagebuch aus dem Jahr 1949 finden sich zahlreiche, hier erstmals veröffentlichte Briefe, Notizen, Kompositionen, Photographien und Skizzen aus seinem Nachlaß.

Als Adorno seine Eltern im Juni 1939 in Havanna wiedersah, waren sie erst wenige Wochen auf Kuba. Oscar und Maria Wiesengrund hatten sich in letzter Minute aus Nazideutschland retten können. Von Kuba zogen sie Ende 1939 zunächst nach Florida und dann nach New York, wo sie von August 1940 an bis zum Ende ihres Lebens blieben. Erst mit Adornos Übersiedlung nach Kalifornien Ende 1941 berichten seine Briefe wieder und fast regelmäßig alle vierzehn Tage von der Arbeit und den Lebensumständen sowie den Freunden, Bekannten und Größen des damaligen Hollywood. Erzählungen von der gemeinsamen Arbeit mit Max Horkheimer, Thomas Mann und Hanns Eisler stehen neben Partyberichten, Clownereien mit Charlie Chaplin und unglücklichen Liebesaffären. Die Briefe bergen aber auch die ungestillte Sehnsucht nach Europa: So beginnt Adorno schon bei Kriegseintritt Amerikas, sich Gedanken über die Rückkehr zu machen. Die »Briefe an die Eltern« - die wohl offensten und persönlichsten, die er je geschrieben hat - eröffnen nicht nur einen Blick auf die Erfahrungen, die am Anfang der berühmten ›Minima Moralia‹ standen, sondern zeigen Adorno von einer bisher unbekannten, überaus persönlichen Seite.
