"Dies ist ein Buch für die, die sich auf Erfahrung einlassen wollen und einzulassen wissen. Es müssen nicht freie Geister sein, aber neugierige. Wilhelm Schmidt-Biggemann gibt uns mit diesem Buch einen philosophischen Erfahrungsbericht. Das Ergebnis - wie bei Erfahrungen, bei Reisen üblich -: eine Topographie von Erinnerungen, die insgesamt ein undeutliches Ganzes ergeben. Weil Topik Philosophie in statu viatoris ist, ist Reisebeschreibung die angemessene philosophische Gattung. Man ist in jedem Topos wie zu Hause, aber doch immer nur vorübergehend. Philosophische Reisebeschreibungen erweitern den Horizont und damit die Erfahrung. Das gilt für räumliche und für zeitliche Erfahrungen: Die Nähe ist immer relativ zu dem, wo man sich gerade aufhält; das gilt gerade auch für vergangene Erfahrungen und Erfahrungen der Vergangenheit, die wieder aufgesucht werden können. Der privilegierte Anspruch der Gegenwartserfahrungen ist nur Symptom für den Mangel an Erfahrungen. Zuordnung zum Hier und Jetzt ist Indiz für Bornierung. Erfahrung philosophischer Gegenden erschließt keine terra incognita, die Erfahrungen erinnern an Ein- und Aussichten. So wenig wie Gegenwartsbezug privilegiert ist, so wenig gibt es einen Sinn, das Neue, die Avantgarde, zu bevorzugen. Das, was man erfährt, ist eo ipso neu, und wenn es anderwärts schon erfahren wurde, dann deshalb, weil das Erfahrene eben ein Erfahrungstopos ist. Es ist der Reichtum der Enzyklopädie, der sich den Neugierigen eröffnet, ohne Systemstrenge, auch nicht mit der Notordnung des Alphabets. Es geht nicht um die Verfügbarkeit der enzyklopädischen Erfahrungen, es geht darum, Erfahrungsfähigkeit zu entwickeln, Erfahrungen möglich zu halten, ohne sie vorschnell einzuordnen."
