Yet Marcantonio did more than render compositions by famous artists in the novel medium of engraving. The entries and essays in this catalogue, written by a group of international scholars and published to accompany the first exhibition of Marcantonio's work in over three decades, reveal the diversity of Marcantonio's oeuvre and the scope of his innovation as the leading printmaker of the Italian Renaissance. In-depth studies of Marcantonio's engravings expand our knowledge of his collaboration with Raphael, while also probing Marcantonio's creative response to the dynamic humanist culture in his native Bologna and later in Venice and Rome. Dress and globalisation is the first work to survey dress around the world, drawing together issues of consumption, ethnicity, gender and the body, as well as anthropological accounts and studies of representation. It examines international western style dress, including jeans and business suits, headwear and hairdressing, ethnicity and so called 'ethnic chic', clothes for the tourist market, the politicisation of traditional dress, 'alternative' dressing, and T-shirts as temporary markers of identity. It also considers dress and environmental issues, touching on adventure gear, the 'green' consumer and the possible impact of 'smart' clothing. Dispelling the myth of universal 'world' attire, this book demonstrates that western-style clothing transcends geographical boundaries but along with other forms of dress, can form a montage of differing tastes, ethnic preferences and national and local imperatives. By discussing the nature of globalisation, this book shows that, if economics permit, all cultures are selective in their choice of what to wear. Raphaels Ziel war - trotz aller bescheidenen Selbsteinschränkung, daß er nur ein Fragment liefern könne - hoch gesteckt, ging es doch um die Grundlegung einer Ästhetik. Eine 1935 unternommene Reise über Chartres in die Saintonge und weiter in den Süden Frankreichs über Toulouse bis in die Pyrenäen war für seine angestrebte Ästhetik die Grundlage: »Ich wollte mir ein Urteil bilden, ob es möglich ist, an diesem Teil der Geschichte (Entstehung, Veränderung, Verfall des romanischen und gotischen Stils) ein Kapitel Kunstgeschichte zu schreiben, die meinen übrigen Anschauungen entspricht. Als ich anfing zu studieren, war ich entsetzt, wie wenig die Kunstgeschichte eine Wissenschaft ist.« Die »Struktur«, auf die Raphael die romanischen Kirchen - im Durchgang durch die Einzelanalyse und den historisch-religiös-philosophischen Kontext - konzentriert, ist die »Wiedereroberung des Steines« und die Formung einer (geschlossenen) »kubischen Masse«. Auch wenn der Baukörper ein gleichsam entlehntes, »vom göttlichen Dasein abhängiges Dasein« hat, unterstreicht er dennoch die körperlichen Grundeigenschaften der Massigkeit, Schwere und Undurchdringlichkeit. »Die ganze Geschichte der romanischen Kunst ist die Geschichte des Versuches, zugleich mit dieser Abhängigkeit von einem höheren, vollkommenen, unendlichen, transzendenten Sein das Wachsen der relativen Selbständigkeit dieses entliehenen, endlichen, irdischen, unvollkommenen Daseins auszudrücken.«

This is the first comprehensive biography of Julius Nyerere, a national liberation leader, the first president of Tanzania and an outstanding statesman of Africa and the global south. Written by three prominent Tanzanians, the work spans over 1200 pages in three volumes. It delves into Nyerere's early days among his chiefly family, and the traditions, friends and education that moulded his philosophy and political thought. All these provide the backdrop for his entrance into nationalist politics, the founding of the independence movement and his original experiment with socialism. The work took six years to research and write, involving extensive and wide-ranging interviews with persons from all walks of life in Tanzania and abroad. Among these were several leaders in East and Southern Africa who were based in Dar es salaam during their liberation struggles. The authors also visited several British universities and archives with material related to Nyerere and Tanzania, thus enriching the work with primary sources that not available in Tanzania. The book does not shy away from a critical assessment of Nyerere’s life and times. It reveals the philosopher ruler’s dilemmas and tensions between freedom and necessity, determinism and voluntarism and, above all, between territorial nationalism and continental Pan-Africanism.
