        The Female in German Modernisms

        Based on scholarly familiarity with the history and study of international modernisms, the book takes the case of Germany, where it is most clearly identified as Expressionism. The analyses here that examine borrowings across the arts – painting, film, and literature – suggest that Expressionism alone is insufficient for an explanation of German modernism. Instead, the book proposes that we should think of modernism as a hydra headed aesthetic phenomenon that includes realism to compose an incomplete modernism. The interarts study focuses on how new modernist visualities, conceived more expansively to include silent film and scripts, locate women in modernity. The readings of silent film in conjunction with the art of Die Brücke find that the figure of the female, and the perspectives used by the artists are influenced by the techniques of silent cinema. The book shows that with each of the twenty texts under consideration, borrowings from other arts influence the woman’s inclusion into the modern world. Detailed analyses of texts, using this intermedial approach, include Kokoschka’s play Murderer, Hope of Women, Urban Gad’s film The Abyss, E.L. Kirchner’s woodcuts and Street Scenes, Elsa Lasker-Schüler’s film script Plum-Pascha, and Döblin’s novel Berlin Alexanderplatz.

        Underutilized and underexploited horticultural crops form an integral part of health food green parks, neutraceutical industry, home decorations, renewable sources of green energy and above all food reserves during calamities. Leaf vegetables like agathi, chekkurmanis, waterleaf, drumstick leaf, basella and colacasia leaf are rich in fibre, minerals and beta carotenes. Cucurbits like ash gourd, pointed gourd, ivy gourd, kekrol, snap melons and chow-chow are rich in iron and amino acids. Fruits like karonda, aonla and cherries are highly nutritious and are suited to less moisture soils. Noni is a fruit for health. Noni juice is recommended against diabetes, obesity and sleeplessness. Among spices, long pepper, mint, celery, fenugreek and garcenia possess medicinal properties. There are a large number of underexploited medicinal plants like tulsi and peppermint with considerable economic value. Underutilized crops like in Tripura, Orissa and Kerala are specially mentioned. There is need to broaden the food basket with lesser know crops. There is a shift from Health Care to Wellness Industry. Prevention is always better then cure. The present volume deals with underexploited and underutilized horticultural crops in its totality. The contributors of each are working scientists in the specific crop.

        Outcaste Bombay

        This monograph presents a history of caste and class in the modern city through the experience of Dalits (members of the lowest caste) in twentieth-century Bombay. There, urban life did not dismantle caste, but instead made it robust and insulated it in the garb of modernity. Juned Shaikh demonstrates that the urban built environment and language are two sites for the habitation of caste in Bombay, as they are the spaces where it was concealed and eclipsed by class. The built environment is thus a quintessential marker, in which elements such as housing, tenements, slums, water supply, and drainage systems readily divulge the class of inhabitants. Shaikh explores the intersection and entanglement of caste and class by focusing on a cluster of groups that occupied subordinate positions in both these hierarchies: the Dalits. Their experience is relevant not only to South Asianists, but resonates with that of oppressed populations throughout the world.
