Lorenzo Da Pontes Leben verlief wahrlich nicht geradlinig. Aus einfachen Verhältnissen stammend, führte ihn sein Weg über die Priesterweihe und Tätigkeit als Literaturprofessor bis in die Neue Welt, wo er die Oper populär machte.Er traf auf berühmte Zeitgenossen wie Casanova, Salieri oder Cagliostro, die er in seinen Memoiren treffend porträtiert, und natürlich auf Mozart. Für ihn schrieb er drei Libretti, durch die sie beide unsterblich wurden: Die Hochzeit des Figaro (1786), Don Giovanni (1787) und Così fan tutte (1790).

The Aldine Edition of the Ancient Greek Epistolographers: Roots and Legacy

This special issue of the Bulletin of the John Rylands Library is devoted to the Aldine edition of the Ancient Greek epistolographers. Published in Venice in 1499 by Aldus Manutius, the Aldine edition was the first printed edition of most of the thirty-six Greek letter collections that it contains. As such, it embodies the intersection between the medieval epistolary anthologies that predated it and the printed editions of Greek epistolographic collections that followed, which were primarily based on its text. In recent decades, the Aldien edition has been the subject of important works, which have sought to analyse its contents and sources. This issue explores the Aldine edition from three perspectives: its relationship to the epistolary collections found in medieval manuscripts, its relationship to the printed editions that followed it and its legacy and value for the modern scholar studying Ancient Greek epistolography.

The reader suffers through Mozart’s economic woes during the time he lived in Salzburg and later on in Vienna, his interactions with Baron Raymond Wetzlar von Plankenstein, and even his “begging letters” to Michael Puchberg. The rounded-out story of this intensely human being reflects Mozart’s dependence on friends in times of financial need, the role of gambling in his daily life, his attitude toward religion, and whether his ultimate dream of living a wealthy, bourgeois life ever really materialized. Amos Navon, Ph.D. graduated from Tel Aviv University and the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. A senior biologist, flautist, and participant in nationally known chamber music ensembles, he has previously published three books of poetry.
