AN ANTHOLOGY OF TRADITIONAL MALAY LITERATURE

        by Muhammad Haji Salleh (Editor)

This anthology of traditional and classical works is a collection of poetry and fiction, legal digests, epistles and religious treatises, narrated, sung or written in the Malay language, in the Malay Archipelago. This language was and is widespread in the Malay Peninsula, Singapore, Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei, in Kalimantan, (Indonesian Borneo), including Pontianak, Ketapang, Sintang, Banjarmasin, Kutai and Samarinda. It was the lingua franca for most of Insular Southeast Asia and even in parts of Continental Southeast Asia, and to be found in Southern Thailand, in the provinces of Satun, Patani and Nakorn Sithammarat, and some islands in Southern Philippines. This time-span of traditional Malay literature covers a period from the earliest beginnings of oral works, through the inscriptions on stone and metal, and through further developments in oral storytelling, the advent of writing. In the decades of the 18th and 19th centuries a collision with western colonial powers and their cultures has resulted in a literature that reflected this traumatic confrontation and also, the so-called ‘modern’ elements. Along with this too we notice the rise of the new genres of the report, the travelogue, the autobiography and biography, which interestingly are prominent antecedents of modern literature.

      • Issues in Human Rights in Islam Concepts and Practices

by Mohd Nazri Latiff Azmi, Engku Mohammad Tajuddin Engku Ali, Sharifah Norshah Bani Syed Bidin, Isyaku Hassan

This book discusses nine contemporary issues which not only focus on local or domestic issues of a certain country but also global issues that might interest the readers especially Muslim human righters. The concept of human rights is characterized as a common standard of achievement for all people and all nations, which is a common benchmark on humanitarian achievements that all the communities and nations in the world need to achieve. From Islamic perspectives, Islam as a comprehensive teaching has taught its people the right to human rights. This is reflected in the purpose of Syari'ah in Islam, which is to preserve religion, to preserve the soul, to preserve the intellect, to preserve the honor or heredity, and to preserve the wealth. It aims to define human rights as a set of rights attached to human beings as universal creatures that are universally obliged to be honored and upheld and protected by state, law, government, and everyone. Hence, Islam and Human Rights are an inseparable unity with the Qur'an and the Hadith as sources of the teachings of Islam. It is hoped that this book would enlighten those who have the interest to understand the comprehensiveness and uniqueness of Islam in discussing the issues of human rights.

by Mohd Nazri Latiff Azmi, Isyaku Hassan, Harison @ Hanisa Mohd Sidek

The existence of trauma in literature has been extensively discussed in several literary and scholarly works across various literary genres. The authors of this book address the lack of sufficient scholarly analysis of trauma in poems particularly from a critical thinking perspective. This book scrutinizes the different ways by which traumatic occurrences are demonstrated, processed, revealed, and repressed through poems. At times, the elements of trauma cannot be directly observed from the mere reading of the poem. In this case, critical thinking plays a significant role in exploring the poet's expressions in relation to trauma. It is evident from the analysis in this book that critical thinking is helpful in exploring traumatic occurrences in poems. This book could be useful to researchers, lecturers, and students of colleges and universities.
