Tourism and Cultural Conflicts
by Edited by Michael Robinson, Priscilla Boniface
The tourism industry and the tourists it serves can exert major influences on host communities at a number of levels. On the one hand, tourism can preserve cultures, resurrect forgotten traditions and prevent cultural stagnation. On the other hand, tourism can challenge existing values, social norms, traditions and behaviour, and this can lead to situations of conflict. In extreme cases, resistance or violence can be the result. For the majority of the time, it would seem that as long as tourism delivers the economic and social benefits it frequently promises, problems are often tolerated and some measure of conflict is accepted. However, whenever tourism brings cultures together, whether freely or forced, a range of complex issues are invoked such as the nature of cultural identity, social and economic power relations, legal and moral rights and management responsibilities. This book examines the changing relationships between tourism and host cultures and explores the reasons why and how conflicts emerge, in a series of detailed case studies from many parts of the globe including the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Nepal, Tunisia, Spain, Peru, and Greece. Initiatives and good practices are highlighted whereby conflict can be replaced by consensus and situations improved through effective management. This book is essential reading for tourism industry professionals and students and researchers in anthropology, sociology and geography.

May 1993Freistil
by Hubert Winkels, Thomas Schmitt

by Paul Valéry, Jürgen Schmidt-Radefeldt, Dieter Steland, Jürgen Schmidt-Radefeldt, Max Looser, Friedhelm Kemp, Andrea Spingler, Ernst Hardt, Karl Löwith, Franz Josef Krebs

Tourism industryDecember 2012The Host Gaze in Global Tourism
by Edited by Omar Moufakkir, Yvette Reisinger
Most tourism theories have been developed from the tourists' perspective, including the seminal work by John Urry, 'The Tourist Gaze', which is now a classic text. The Host Gaze in Global Tourism is a unique book for researchers and students as it is the first to look at the host gaze from within the host community. It discusses how the gaze is constructed, how it has developed, how it varies between countries and how the tourism industry can affect it. By looking at the gazes of both Western and non-Western hosts, this book analyses the dynamics of a host destination and consequences the gaze can have upon the tourist.

ImmunologyOctober 1996Immunology of Host-Ectoparasitic Arthropod Relationships
by Edited by Stephen K Wikel
Host immune responses to ectoparasitic arthropods are critical elements in determining the nature of animal host-arthropod relationships, including transmission of vector-borne pathogens. This is the first book to provide a comprehensive analysis for both the student and specialist of the emerging field of “immunoentomology”. Our fundamental understanding of this topic has increased dramatically in recent years. Chapters prepared by specialists from the USA, UK and Australia provide comprehensive reviews of key subjects. The book concludes with a consideration of the application of fundamental knowledge about the immunology of the host-arthropod interface to the development of anti-arthropod vaccines. It is aimed particularly at medical and veterinary entomologists and acarologists, as well as immunologists.

Insecticide & herbicide technologyJuly 1995Host Plant Resistance to Insects
by Niranjan Panda, Gurdev S Khush
The overuse and misuse of insecticides some four decades ago created major environmental problems and was followed by the development of an ‘integrated pest management’ approach to crop pests. This approach utilizes a combination of host plant resistance and cultural, biological and chemical control methods. Crop improvement programs emphasize the breeding of crop varieties with multiple resistance to pests, and resistant varieties developed in recent years represent some of the greatest achievements of modern agriculture. This book presents a broad overview of host plant resistance to insect pests. It shows how plants can defend themselves naturally and how insects have adapted to overcome these mechanisms through coevolution. It also describes screening and breeding for insect resistance.

April 2021RNAi for Plant Improvement and Protection
by Bruno Mezzetti, Jeremy Sweet, Lorenzo Burgos
RNA interference (RNAi) has the potential to make major contributions towards sustainable crop production and protection with minimal environmental impacts compared to other technologies. RNAi is being developed and exploited both within plants (i.e. host-induced gene silencing, HIGS) and/or as topical applications (e.g. spray-induced gene silencing, SIGS) for targeting pest and pathogen genes and for manipulating endogenous gene expression in plants. Chapters by international experts review current knowledge on RNAi, methods for developing RNAi systems in GM plants and applications for crop improvement, crop production and crop protection. Chapters examine both endogenous systems in GM plants and exogenous systems where interfering RNAs are applied to target plants, pests and pathogens. The biosafety of these different systems is examined and methods for risk assessment for food, feed and environmental safety are discussed. Finally, aspects of the regulation of technologies exploiting RNAi and the socio-economic impacts of RNAi technologies are discussed. Chapter 1: Introduction to RNAi in Plant Production and Protection. Bruno Mezzetti, Jeremy Sweet and Lorenzo Burgos Chapter 2: Gene silencing to induce pathogen-derived resistance in plants. Zhen Liao, Elena Zuriaga, Ángela Polo and Maria L. Badenes Chapter 3: Exogenous application of small RNAs as a tool for gene function discovering. Barbara Molesini and Tiziana Pandolfini Chapter 4: The “Trojan Horse” approach for successful RNA interference in inscects. Dimitrios Kontogiannatos, Anna Kolliopoulou and Luc Swevers. Chapter 5: Biogenesis and functional RNAi in fruit-trees. Michel Ravelonandro and Pascal Briard Chapter 6: Gene silencing or gene editing: the pros and cons. The superfamily Chalcidoidea (the jewel wasps) are part of the insect order Hymenoptera. The superfamily comprises more than 27,000 known species, with an estimated total diversity of more than 500,000 species, meaning that the vast majority have yet to be discovered and described. Most of the species are parasitoids, attacking the egg, larval stage or pupal stage of their host, though many other life cycles are known including gall associates and fig pollinators. This landmark volume has been co-authored by world authorities on the systematics and biology of chalcidoid wasps. It provides an introduction to the superfamily, a review of chalcidoid morphology, an overview of the fossil record, a phylogenetic framework for the revised classification of the superfamily, an identification key for the 50 recognized families, and detailed treatments of the individual families. The book consolidates much recent research on the phylogenomics of Chalcidoidea and the fossil record. This research has resulted in substantial changes to their classification, and in a review of all families, the new family groups are presented to the general scientific public for the first time. The book is an historic milestone, presenting a reclassification of the superfamily and a synthesis of knowledge on all aspects of Chalcidoidea that will serve for generations to come. Individual chapters clarify the limits of families and subfamilies based on contemporary phylogenetic studies. These chapters provide for each family: diagnostic features and extensively illustrated details of their specialized morphology, summaries of their distribution and worldwide diversity, a history of their classification history and major workers, phylogenetic relationships, natural history, use in biological control and economic impact, fossil history, and fully illustrated identification keys to subfamilies or in some cases to genera. Additional chapters present best practices for collecting, rearing from hosts, and preservation, review digital resources currently available, explore the diversity of their natural history and their human impacts, such as their use and importance to biological and natural control of pest arthropods. Chapters by worldwide authorities explore the enormous biological diversity of chalcidoid wasps including consequences of their almost unbelievable miniaturization (the most extreme known in insects), relationships with endosymbionts, special aspects of genetics, genomics, evolutionary biology and development, and brief accounts of the most significant chalcidoid researchers that have passed. For many years to come this important book will serve the needs of hymenopterists and professional entomologists, taxonomists and systematists, entomologists working on parasitic wasps as biological control agents, and ecologists working on parasite-host interactions.
