Hier begegnete er André Breton und arbeitete an surrealistischen Publikationen mit. 1962 wurde er zum Botschafter in Neu-Delhi ernannt. Dieses Amt legte er 1968 aus Protest gegen das Massaker an demonstrierenden Studenten in Mexiko-Stadt nieder. Ab dieser Zeit lehrte als Gastprofessor in den USA.
