        Konservatismus

Ein Beitrag zur Soziologie des Wissens

by Karl Mannheim, Nico Stehr, David Kettler, Volker Meja

by Karl Mannheim, Nico Stehr, David Kettler, Volker Meja

Biodiversity and Conservation Along an East African Railway

A Survey of the Dar es Salaam-Makutupora Standard Gauge Railway, Tanzania

by Catherine Aloyce Masao, Joel Nobert, Flora John Magige, Edmond Alavaisha, S. Zainabu Bungwa, Philbert Anitha Byabato, Deusdedith Fidelis, Elikana John, Jasson John, Julius Mohamed Kibaja, Heriel Moshy, Athumani Fatina Mturi, R. It is well known that infrastructure development projects can boost the economy and reduce the cost of trade in both developing and developed economies, however, infrastructure projects can also cause biodiversity loss. This book is the result of an important biodiversity survey conducted along an East African railway in Tanzania. The building of the railway, still under construction, has already led to habitat loss, habitat degradation and landscape change which may have affected biodiversity. The book includes recommendations to mitigate the effect of railway construction by protecting biodiversity and ecosystem services which could have major implications across Africa and other regions. The area covered by the survey focuses on the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) running through the Pugu and Ruvu South Forest Reserves towards Maktupora-Dodoma, plus data on large mammals through to Isaka-Shinyanga. The Pugu forests boast high biodiversity of both flora and fauna, some of which are endemic to the area. There are both plant and animal species that are of major conservation concern so there is urgent need to consolidate information to help formulate suitable conservation measures. The data collected covers plants, invertebrates, amphibians, birds, and mammals for terrestrial and aquatic environments along the SGR. This work is timely as there are many more ongoing SGR construction projects in Tanzania and across Africa, as such construction activities inevitably involve some habitat modification and destruction that may have a negative impact on biodiversity. National and international scientists, decision and policy makers, as well as ecologists and conservation managers involved in large infrastructure projects will find this book invaluable. The book provides baseline information and can be used as a case study for other infrastructure development projects around the world.

        THE PARTISANS

        by JOŽE PIRJEVEC

This long-awaited book is the first to contain a comprehensive account of the emergence and development of the Partisan movement in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, which occupiers and Quislings tried to erase from the map of Europe in 1941. The book contains a considerable amount of information obtained by the author through research in archives in London, Washington, Berlin, Munich, Helsinki and Moscow which to date has remained unknown since some parts of the archives were only opened recently. This extensive monograph is without a doubt Dr. Pirjevec’s life’s work. It is the first comprehensive and synthetic account of the emergence and development of the Partisan movement in the whole of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, from the attack on and disintegration of Yugoslavia in April 1941 up until the end of the war. The author describes the strained relations within the movement, as well as the relations between the Partisans and other military formations (White Guards, Chetniks, Ustashe, Ballists, etc.) and between the Partisans and allies in the anti-Hitler coalition. The book demonstrates that there would have been no national liberation movement without the Communists and their utopian belief that they would create a better future, without their fanaticism, organization and discipline. Above all, the Yugoslav Partisan movement contributed significantly to the defeat of the Third Reich and its satellites and brought victory to the Yugoslav nations. Serbs, Montenegrins and Croats were saved from the shame of collaborationism, and Slovenes and Macedonians were also recognized as European nations with mapped out borders and statehood.

        THE CONTRACT

        by MOJCA ŠIROK

Nominated for The Kresnik Award in 2019 (Award for the best novel in Slovenia). The first body of a man is discovered by the police in a prestigious city quarter, in the villa belonging to one of the most successful lawyers in Rome. This murder is followed by a traffic accident at the other end of Rome and a suicide of a mafia boss in prison. But coincidences exist only in novels, says the chief police investigator. By examining the events behind the scenes, Pogodba, through juicy language, lively dialogues and unexpected plot twists takes the reader into the very heart of mafia activities. The detectives, prosecutors, journalists and politicians often share past connections. Their love affairs and friendships are interwoven with their professional duties, and the lines between where the state ends and the mafia begins, are very fuzzy.

        THE FIRST LADY

        by STANKA HRASTELJ

THE FIRST LADY (Prva dama) This novel is a reworking, in minimalist style and condensed manner, of the Biblical story of the beautiful Bathsheba and King David. The king’s “controversial” wife is an archetypal femme fatale, who is aware of her charms also in an emancipatory sense and, regardless of the means and victims, in an almost mathematically calculating way exchanges them for a “better” life – marriage to the educated king loved by his people and through this a climb up the social ladder, a better position, and consequently better pay and independence. Although Bathsheba’s life seems like a fairy tale, inside her grows a nagging feeling of guilt. Using fate and god as an excuse does not bring her peace, but pushes her towards self-destructive behaviour.
