Levelling The Playing Field

Providing good quality education to all children in the poorest countries of the world is not a simple task. However, improving children’s health and nutrition is one simple step that can be taken towards achieving this goal. Health and nutrition programmes offer substantial benefits to children’s education, helping them to attend school and learn while there. What is more, the education of the poorest in society benefits the most from such programmes because the poor are more likely to suffer from ill health or poor nutrition and are also more likely to experience a disruption in their learning as a result. School health and nutrition programmes make use of the education system to deliver simple treatments for common conditions. The result is a highly cost-effective way to reduce inequalities in education and to help all children around the world reach their educational potential. This argument is examined through a discussion of the challenges to child health and nutrition and the impact of these on education and an analysis of the costs, benefits and policy options involved in the implementation of health and nutrition programmes in schools. Providing a simple and achievable solution to improving access, gender equity and the quality of basic education, this book will be essential to policy makers, educational and health organizations and researchers in international development, public health, psychology and education.

Nematodes, which are small multi cellular organisms have been used as biological models since the 1960's. The nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans is a free-living nematode, about 1mm in length, that lives in temperate soil environments. It is made up of about 1000 cells, and has a short life cycle of only 2 weeks. It was the first multicellular organism to have its whole genome sequenced. Intentionalität ist nach Searles Auffassung die Basis sprachlicher Bedeutung. In seiner Theorie der Intentionalität geht es um die begrifflichen Eigenschaften intentionaler Zustände (auf die Frage nach ihrem ontologischen Status geht er ausführlicher ein in 'Geist, Hirn und Wissenschaft', stw 591). Zwei Aspekte stehen dabei im Vordergrund der Untersuchung: die Logik der Repräsentation und der Kausalität intentionaler Zustände. Doch Searle entwickelt in dieser Arbeit nicht nur eine Theorie der Intentionalität und des Zusammenhangs zwischen sprachlichem und geistigem Inhalt. In einem vornehmlich kritischen Teil setzt er sich ausführlich mit konkurrierenden Auffassungen aus dem Bereich der analytischen Philosophie auseinander, insbesondere mit derzeit sehr einflußreichen 'nicht-deskriptivistischen' Theorien des Bezugs, wie sie von S. Kripke, H. Putnam, K. Donnellan, T. Burge und D. Kaplan vertreten und angeregt wurden.

Dieser umfangreiche Band vereinigt über 450 Gedichte von Artmann und bringt zudem in einem Anhang die Gedichte, die Hannes Schneider aufgefunden hat, nachdem diese Sammlung 1969 erschienen war. Er enthält wohl seine sämtlichen Gedichte von den ersten, 1945, unter dem Pseudonym Ib Hansen geschriebenen, bis zum Zyklus ›Landschaften‹ – mit Ausnahme der reinen Dialektgedichte. Artmanns Gedichte sind zumeist spontan entstanden und dennoch von höchster formaler Artistik. Es gibt kaum methodische Versuche, die Artmann nicht unternommen hätte. In seinen Gedichten haben die konsequenten Sprachversuche der ›Wiener Gruppe‹ eine sehr individuelle Realisation gefunden. Artmann schreibt keine Bekenntnisgedichte, sein lyrisches Ich versteckt sich in hundertfacher Verkleidung. Mit unverkrampfter Leichtigkeit verfügt er über die formalen Möglichkeiten der Weltliteratur (oder jenes abseitigen Teils davon, den er als Tradition betrachtet), er erfindet Wörter, ganze Sprachen. Die Jahrhunderte sind in seinen Gedichten gleichzeitig vertreten, Robinson Crusoe steht neben Donald Duck, barocke Sprache neben Wiener Slang. »Wir haben meines Wissens zur Zeit im deutschen Sprachraum keinen Verwandlungskünstler ähnlichen Ausmaßes und verwandter Gescheitheit wie H.
