»Erst wenn schließlich auch die Werbeblöcke gestrichen werden,« so eine zuverlässige Faustregel, »ist die Sache wirklich ernst.« Eine weltmachterschütternde Kamikaze-Aktion oder wenigstens ein rekordverdächtiger Amoklauf vor der eigenen Haustür – es muß knüppeldick kommen, um die tägliche Infotainment-Maschinerie aus dem Takt zu bringen. »Das System, in dem wir leben«, ist auf den ersten Blick mehr ein mediales als ein politisch-ökonomisches. Auf den zweiten Blick ist beides identisch. In »Angela Davis löscht ihre Website« verbinden sich politisches Denken und Pop, der forcierte Blick auf die Gegenwarts-Oberfläche und dessen ständige Infragestellung vor dem Hintergrund der Historie auf. »Vortäuschung falscher Tatsachen«, so die Frage, »oder Vortäuschung richtiger Tatsachen?« Schwer zu durchschauen – gerade angesichts von Gewalt und kriegerischer Auseinandersetzung und ihren jeweiligen Rechtfertigungen –, was Realität ist, was Medienrealität, was auslösende Gewalt, was angeblich gerechte »Vergeltung der Vergeltung der Vergeltung«. »Gibt es die neue Weltordnung schon?« In »Angela Davis löscht ihre Website« geht es um nichts Geringeres als um »das Zeitalter, in dem wir leben/ die Epoche, in der wir leben«, in der Gegensätze und Haltungen mitunter ununterscheidbar geworden sind; Veronas Welt und Sofies Welt stehen ebenso selbstverständlich nebeneinander wie MTV und CNN. »Kriegsfilm?/ Antikriegsfilm?/ Kriegsberichterstattung?« heißt es wiederholt aus dem Off, denn es gilt die unmißverständliche Losung: »seit 5 Uhr 45 wird zurückgefragt.«

In 2020, amidst the whirlwind of the COVID-19 pandemic, the ideas from books about the science of becoming a millionaire returned to Luis Miguel Estrada whom, since he left a financial job, has dedicated himself fully to literature. In this book, he thinks some of the key questions raised by bestsellers from Napoleon Hill to Kiyosaki. Do we stop seeking money just because we pursue art? More importantly: regardless of what we do, how do we seek money? Why have narratives like positive thinking and the law of attraction become a universal language that gains strength during each economic crisis? This book attempts to answer these questions, beginning with the origins of books on becoming a millionaire, which delve into the agile 19th-century United States, transition through the fast-paced turn of the century, and explode in the years after the Great Depression. The journey continues with examples of wild successes (real-life fraudsters like Elizabeth Holmes or fictional criminals like Walter White from Breaking Bad) that prompt us to question the influence of success-at-any-cost ideas on popular culture, as well as their ethical limits. How can one reconcile readings, cultural products, and experiences that seem so distant? The broader reading audience responds more to "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill than to "The Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck. Is there a way to read them alongside each other and emerge renewed from the experience? This book invites you on that adventure.

The sound of New Wave pop music and the early days of MTV were defined by the work of a handful of iconic musicians, and few stood taller in that era than Ric Ocasek, frontman and primary songwriter for The Cars. The band charted 13 Top 40 singles in the U.S. from 1978 to 1987 and the music video for their 1984 song "You Might Think" won the first-ever MTV Video Music Award for Video of the Year for its groundbreaking use of computer graphics. Some of them have already been published in prose collections, but most of them – for the first time. In 2017 “The return of Tethys” story won the competition of short prose “How not to love you”, launched by the “Coronation of the Word” and the Department of Public Communications of the Kyiv State Administration. “Painful gap” and “Time X” essays got a record number of likes in the short story competition and were included in the “Little stories for everyday” collection, presented at the 24th Publishers’ forum in Lviv. “13 tips for those who are going on safari to the district clinic”, “Why do I love Ukraine”, “How?”, “91st” were written as blog posts, however readers liked them so much that they also were selected to the collection.

We, four suburban forty-somethings, had all but ignored live music, proper live music, for twenty years - The Banshees, Buzzcocks and The Smiths happened so long ago that they might have been in a different life. Live music now was a mum from Doncaster pretending to be the blonde one from Abba, and we needed help. Thankfully, it came, as our children found indie-rock, and demanded to see it up close. A night at Wembley with The Killers kick-started a five year odyssey of seventy nights, a hundred bands, and all of this – Superheroes in spandex, Viking Metallers in a strip-club, cross-dressing sax players, foam-parties, typewriter solos, half-eaten birds, demented babysitters, homicidal ticket-touts, terrifying body-art, the world’s laziest roadie, and of course, some dad-dancing. We’ve met an 80’s legend playing drums in a punk covers band, and been stalked by a masked man in a gay night-club. We’ve been derailed by the Pope, and insulted by a singer who then bought us all a drink, and even, briefly, had rock stars’ arse in our hands. Well, in my hands. Fleeting it may have been, but he hasn’t called, or even sent a text. Never Mind the Botox is a journey of mild, middle-aged rebellion, as once or twice a month, we try not to stand out in a crowd thirty years younger - we usually fail. Sometimes the children keep us company, others we leave them at home, but there is always, along the way, some fun to be had. And so what if we can’t hear the next morning. Old-people need rock’n’roll too.
