La communauté juive de Cuba : Les Années d'Or, 1906-1958 par le Dr. Jay Levinson En 1906, Manuel Hadida convoqua une réunion de onze juifs dans son bureau. Un membre de sa famille venait de mourir, et le but de la réunion était de fonder une synagogue et un cimetière juif pour les quelques cent « colons hébreux » de Cuba. Lors d'une autre réunion qui suivit peu de temps après, des responsables furent élus, mais pendant l'automne de le même année 1906, le trésorier nouvellement élu mourut à son tour. Ce furent les débuts de la communauté juive de Cuba, qui devait éventuellement atteindre le nombre de plus de 15 000 membres à son zénith pendant les années 1940 et 1950. Cette étude, première du genre et complète, retrace l'histoire de cette communauté, reconstituant de nombreux événements longtemps oubliés. Le premier rabbin sur l'île serait venu de Floride, où il aurait été le propriétaire d'une fabrique de crème glacée, et se serait rendu à Santiago de Cuba et à La Havane. Au cours de la Deuxième Guerre Mondiale, un abattoir de viande cachère aurait fonctionné à Cuba pour les soldats de la U.S. Army. Meyer Lansky, connu pour ses activités clandestines, a présenté une application pour devenir membre d'une synagogue de La Havane. Le livre permet aussi de mieux comprendre certains points d'histoire mieux connus. Le refus du gouvernement de Cuba d'autoriser le paquebot St. Louis à laisser débarquer ses passagers est examiné avec une vision de la fuite des juifs de l'Europe nazie, particulièrement en direction du Mandat de Palestine, où la politique d'immigration des britannique était en train de changer (ce qu'ignoraient les cubains). La construction de nouvelles synagogues à la veille de la Révolution est considérée dans le contexte des nouveaux riches et de la migration vers les banlieues. Jay Levinson, un fonctionnaire civil en retraite et écrivain indépendant, a publié un grand nombre de livres et d'articles à propos de ses nombreux voyages dans plus de 50 pays. Il écrit beaucoup à propos des sites juifs et de histoire de ce peuple. Levinson a un doctorat de l'Université de New York et il est actuellement professeur invite au John Jay College. Pour écrire ses livres, le Dr. Levinson interroge un grand nombre de gens, consulte des documents dans les archives, examine les journaux de l'époque correspondante, visite les sites, et il a parcouru les cimetières de Cuba à la recherche d'informations – même sur les pierres tombales. This book helps readers be smart shoppers instead of victims of marketing gimmicks. Obviously, there are too many items on store shelves for this book to be "complete." Rather, the idea is to provide representative product examples to increase awareness and give consumers a better idea of what they are buying and a product’s benefits. There is no such thing as a "best buy." Some shoppers look for quality. Others are motivated by nutrition. Price can be a very strong consideration, but not for everyone. The basic philosophy of this book is not to push readers into any specific direction. Rather, the intent is to make readers aware of what they are buying so they can make intelligent decisions and choose a healthier diet. There are two rules that apply to all consumers: (1) understand the label, both what is written and what is not, and (2) realize that the serving size on the label is probably not the portion size consumers really eat, so adjust the cost and nutrition information accordingly. Jay Levinson has a PhD from New York University. His career has been extremely diverse, working for the US Central Intelligence Agency and then in the forensic division of the Israel Police. For some ten years he ran a food co-op, gaining understanding about food distribution and sales. He has published six books and several hundred articles and has lectured in more than two dozen countries in four languages. The author has visited several dozen food and beverage production companies, both big and small, and interviewed their key personnel.

Insects, being poikilothermic, are among the organisms that are most likely to respond to changes in climate, particularly increased temperatures. Range expansions into new areas, further north and to higher elevations, are already well documented, as are physiological and phenological responses. It is anticipated that the damage to crops and forests by insects will increase as a consequence of climate change, i.e. increasing temperatures primarily. However, the evidence in support of this common "belief" is sparse. Climate Change and Insect Pests sums up present knowledge regarding both agricultural and forest insect pests and climate change in order to identify future research directions.

The Art of “Pulsed Life”

The first collection of original critical essays on Melville’s poetryHerman Melville’s literary reputation is based chiefly on his fiction, especially Moby-Dick and Billy Budd. Yet he was a gifted poet, as evidenced by his collection of Civil War poems, Battle-Pieces and Aspects of the War (1866), and by his epic-length poem, Clarel (1876), a symbolic rendering of his pilgrimage of 1856–57 to the Holy Land, as well as the two small volumes of poems he published before his death in 1891.Melville as Poet: The Art of “Pulsed Life” opens with an introduction by Sanford E. Marovitz and the late Douglas Robillard on Melville’s conception of poetry as a literary form. The essays begin with Dennis Berthold’s study of how Melville’s observations of art at New York’s National Academy of Design in 1865 are reflected in Battle-Pieces, and Mary K. Bercaw Edwards follows, describing how the nautical combat of the ironclads Monitor and Merrimack became a subject of wide contemporary interest in popular culture. The next three essays focus on Clarel. Peter Riley explains how Melville’s familiarity with the congestion of Lower Manhattan as a customs inspector influenced his descriptions of Jerusalem. Gordon M. Poole then discusses notable subtleties in Ruggero Bianchi’s Italian translation of the poem, and Robert R. Wallace reveals how selected Biblical prints and other graphics familiar to Melville affected the poet’s descriptions in Clarel. Melville’s John Marr and Other Sailors (1888) is then examined by A. Robert Lee, who emphasizes the themes of memory and death in that small volume, and Sanford E. Marovitz illuminates Melville’s method of unifying Timoleon, Etc. by using contrast to bind, not separate. Vernon Shetley compares Melville’s “Pausilippo” thematically with Shelley’s “Julian and Maddalo,” and Michael Jonik explores “The Archipelago” for insights into Melville’s experimentation with imagery and form. Finally, Wyn Kelley, Clark Davis, and Robert Sandberg imaginatively examine and reassess poems Melville left unpublished at his death.Melville as Poet is a valuable collection of new and critical scholarship that aims to encourage more and deeper study of Melville’s art of poetry.
