African modernity is the result of original combinations that involve a figurative dimension. Hidden beneath the overt forms of domination, there is an ongoing, subtle war of signs. These symbolic conflicts manifest themselves in the stage of modernity as a means of creating ordinary social bonds. The competitive construction of this public space begins from the early moments of African incorporation into European imaginaries, with military campaigns serving as the realization of this soon-to-be colonizing imagination. Photographic space becomes a part of this silent process of inventing and/or subverting identities, contributing to the marking of social evolution. The photographs are studied here not to showcase exotic postures of indigenous people, characterized as clumsy and innocent, which underlie a certain primitivist aesthetics, but to facilitate a distancing that allows for the observation of the internal dynamics of contemporary African societies. This approach raises significant epistemological issues that challenge the heuristic function of images, imaginations, and imaginaries. Through the medium of images, this book sheds new light on the distinctions, frictions, and strategies of African modernity, which has been the subject of many misinterpretations.

This is the first introduction of its kind to an important cross-section of postcolonial African filmmakers from the 1950s to the present. Building on previous critical work in the field, this volume will bring together ideas from a range of disciplines - film studies, African cultural studies, and, in particular, postcolonial studies - in order to combine the in-depth analysis of individual films and bodies of work by individual directors with a sustained interrogation of these films in relation to important theoretical concepts. Structurally, the book is straightforward, though the aim is to incorporate diversity and complexity of approach within the overall simplicity of format. Chapters provide both an overview of the director's output to date, and the necessary background - personal or national, cultural or political - to enable readers to achieve a better understanding of the director's choice of subject matter, aesthetic or formal strategies, or ideological stance. They also offer a particular reading of one or more films, in which the authors aim to situate African cinema in relation to important critical and theoretical debates. This book thus constitutes a new departure in African film studies, recognising the maturity of the field, and the need for complex yet accessible approaches to it, which move beyond the purely descriptive while refusing to get bogged down in theoretical jargon. Consequently, the volume should be of interest not only to specialists but also to the general reader.

Cinematic ethnography proposes an interdisciplinary approach to theories and practices at the intersection of art, anthropology and cinema. The book proposes a model of collective aesthetics and collaborative filmmaking, going beyond the straightforward representation of reality that is so prevalent in visual anthropology and film studies. This book explores the practices of filmmakers who utilise sensory collaborative approaches to convey diversity of knowledge. It affirms that the more we allow cinema to infuse audio-visual transmissions of reality, the more we might be able to experience the evoked reality. The book proposes a dialogic journey, inviting the reader to pause during the reading of the book to watch some of the author's films, which exemplify the discussed theories and practices. This innovative work from a practising filmmaker and visual anthropologist invites us to rethink how our cinematic practices, rather than aiming at factual representation and description, might instead contribute to a collaborative understanding of intercultural dialogue and shared knowledge.
