The European or Mediterranean cultivated olive (Olea europaea L., subsp. europaea, var. europaea) is one of the most ancient cultivated fruit tree crops. Today, hundreds of olive varieties are grown to produce high-quality fruit for oil and for table olives consumption. The olive industry has undergone profound innovations in the past 30 years, due to scientific and technical advances, particularly in genomics, breeding, orchard management, mechanization and agro-ecology, although not all these developments are yet available to smaller producers. Olive cultivation has also spread to many countries outside the Mediterranean Basin, where it ihas been traditionally present for over 6,000 years. These new olive-growing countries are experiencing further expansion of the industry, due to increased awareness of the nutritional and health properties of extra virgin olive oil. This book is a much-needed update on olive biology and cultivation, with contributions from leading international experts, and includes: Biology Genetics and breeding Olive propagation and nursery Planting new olive orchards Horticultural management of olive orchards Plant protection Olive by-products (wood, leaves) Multifunctionality of olive groves and ecosystem services The Olive: Botany and Production is invaluable for researchers and students in horticulture and agriculture, as well as producers involved in olive orchard management.

Fungicides in Practice
by Richard P. Oliver, Janna L Beckerman
This is a guide for practitioners and scientists involved in fungicide research and use. It describes the principles underlying decisions about which fungicides to use, when to apply them, and what dose to use. Readers should be able to successfully interpret the labels and promotional material that comes with fungicides as well the regulatory restrictions that govern their use. The focus is on broadacre and horticultural crops, such as cereals, vines, soft and pome fruits. Based loosely on the 2014 edition of Fungicides in Crop Protection this book is significantly altered with new content and major revisions to all chapters. The contents include: · Fungicide markets, discovery and performance · Using fungicides to control diseases - seed treatments, foliar treatments, application methods · Crop-specific aspects of disease control, with case studies · Biological crop protection, and organic cultivation · Fungicide resistance · Legislation and regulation The audience comprises growers, agronomists and consultants who have decision making responsibility in broadacre and horticultural crop protection. The book will also appeal to researchers in agro chemical companies and in the public sector research who are involved in fungicide discovery and resistance management.

On trial
Testing new drugs in psychiatry, 1940–1980
by Marietta Meier, Magaly Tornay, Mario König
The heroic story of the invention of antidepressants is a key part of the psychopharmaceutical turn. On Trial revolves around one of its pioneers, psychiatrist Roland Kuhn, who practiced in Münsterlingen, a state-run psychiatric hospital in Switzerland. Kuhn became famous for the 'discovery' of the first antidepressant, Tofranil, and more recently notorious for his numerous trials on often unsuspecting patients. Largely based on the extensive and previously inaccessible sources of Kuhn's private archive, the book delves into the early days of industry-sponsored clinical research in psychiatry. It examines how the clinic, patients, doctors, nursing staff, corporations, and authorities interacted in the trials. Conducted from the 1940s to 1980s, the Münsterlingen drug trials are historicised and situated in the period's evolving landscape of experimentation.

Warum Klasse zählt
by Erik Olin Wright, Philipp Hölzing, Oliver Nachtwey
Was sind soziale Klassen?

Images of Oliver Cromwell
Essays for and by Roger Howell, Jr
by Essays for and by Roger Howell, Jr.
Oliver Cromwell has been both applauded and reviled and his memory invoked in periods and in countries other than his own. This complex historiography has left us today with many different versions of Cromwell as man, general and statesman of which the conflicting images are the subject of this book. Available in paperback for the first time, this classic study is based on the unfinished magnum opus of the leading scholar of seventeenth-century history, Roger Howell (1936?89). It includes chapters by a team of leading international experts on a broad range of subjects originally planned by Howell himself. It includes Howell's studies of the reactions to Cromwell in the Restoration period and in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Added to these are reprints of his essays on psychohistorical approaches to Cromwell and on Cromwell's contribution to English liberty. Further historiographical portraits of the Protector are offered in chapters which consider Cromwell and the Glorious Revolution; Carlyle's Cromwell; Irish images of the Protector; American interpretations; and the comparisons made between Cromwell and the twentieth-century dictators. ;
