The Germans in their century
1890–1990
by Christian Graf Krockow
Why did Bismarck's new German State Degenerate into Hitler's Third Reich? What happened to Europes leading industrial nation - cultural heirs to Kant, Goethe, Durer and Bach? How did East and West Germany diverge after 1945? In this unique and controversial study the author - Prussian aristocrat, writer, scholar, historian and patriot - fearlessly explores German social mores, political structures and national psyche over several centuries. V. Krockow draws some sobering and novel conclusions about the unfolding drama in general and the Holocaust in particular. First published in 1990 to coincide with the fall of the Berlin Wall, the German edition sold widely. This first translation now makes it available to English-speaking readers worldwide.

Practical R for Biologists
An Introduction
by Donald Quicke, Buntika A Butcher, Rachel Kruft Welton
R is a freely available, open-source statistical programming environment which provides powerful statistical analysis tools and graphics outputs. R is now used by a very wide range of people; biologists (the primary audience of this book), but also all other scientists and engineers, economists, market researchers and medical professionals. R users with expertise are constantly adding new associated packages, and the range already available is immense.This text works through a set of studies that collectively represent almost all the R operations that biology students need in order to analyse their own data. The material is designed to serve students from first year undergraduates through to those beginning post graduate levels. Chapters are organized around topics such as graphing, classical statistical tests, statistical modelling, mapping, and text parsing. Examples are based on real scientific studies, and each one covers the use of more R functions than those simply necessary to get a p-value or plot.The book walks the reader through the data analysis process, starting with very simple plots, and continuing through more complex analyses and programming. It shows how to deal with issues such as error messages that can be confronting for beginners, in order to set students up for a successful scientific career using R.Collectively the authors have a vast amount of teaching experience which they apply here to make the passage into R programming as gentle and easy as possible, whilst guiding the reader to tackle quite complicated programming. Christian Dualist Heresies in the Byzantine World, c. 650-c. 1450
by Janet Hamilton, Bernard Hamilton
Christian dualism originated in the reign of Constans II (641-68). It was a popular religion, which shared with orthodoxy an acceptance of scriptual authority and apostolic tradition and held a sacramental doctrine of salvation, but understood all these in a radically different way to the Orthodox Church. One of the differences was the strong part demonology played in the belief system. This text traces, through original sources, the origins of dualist Christianity throughout the Byzantine Empire, focusing on the Paulician movement in Armenia and Bogomilism in Bulgaria. It presents not only the theological texts, but puts the movements into their social and political context.

Intentionalität
Eine Abhandlung zur Philosophie des Geistes
by Harvey P. Gavagai, John R. Searle

The Best of H. P. Lovecraft
by H. P. Lovecraft, Rudolf Hermstein, H. C. Artmann

Biographie
by Jorge G. Castañeda, Christiane Barckhausen-Canale, Sven Dörper, Ursula Gräfe, Udo Rennert

Invasions
Fears and fantasies of imagined wars in Britain, 1871-1918
by Christian K. Melby
Invasions is an ambitious, new and authoritative study of one of the defining cultural products of the Victorian and Edwardian eras. By the outbreak of war in 1914 invasion-scare fiction had profoundly changed British society, becoming not just a vibrant part of popular culture, but a reference point among military planners, advertisers, and politicians. This intersection between politics and culture, between entertainment and war planning, sets invasion-scare stories apart as one of the most versatile and interesting fictional products in modern British history. Building on recent work in both history and literature studies, Invasions is the first study of invasion-scare fiction to examine both the form (that is, fiction) and the function (the political argument) of the genre.

A history of English spelling
by D. G. Scragg
This book provides an outline history of English spelling from the Anglo-Saxon' adoption of the Roman alphabet to the present day. It shows the respective influences on modern usage of native French and Latin orthographies and attempts a definition of the manner in which spelling stabilised. A final chapter traces changing notions of correctness in spelling during the last four centuries, and also gives a summary of the principle movements for its reform in favour of a more consistent and phonetic system of notion. Students in higher education specialising in English or linguistics and also those studying other languages at an advanced level should find this a useful book. The general reader with an interest in the history of his language or the question of spelling will find it most readable ;

Roosevelt's peacetime administrations, 1933–41
A documentary history
by G. Bennett, Harry Bennett
Over a half-century after the death of Roosevelt the debate on his presidency and the New Deal remains vibrant, for in many ways he created the modern presidency and he remains a giant of American political history. This book, specifically designed for sixth-form and undergraduate use, serves as an essential introduction to his domestic policy during his tenure from the struggles of the Depression to the outbreak of the Second World War. Incorporating archival discoveries at the Roosevelt Presidential Library, this documentary collection focuses on the debates and controversies surrounding the implementation and practice of New Deal policies. It highlights the meanings, flaws and outcomes of Roosevelt's attempts to refashion American society. With an extensive contextualising introduction, the book reproduces extracts from a variety of sources including Government records, public addresses and speeches and the private papers of Roosevelt and some of his closest associates. ;

Conservatism, Christian Democracy and the dynamics of transformation
Traditions, cooperation and influence in North-West Europe, 1945-91
by Gary Love, Christian Egander Skov
Conservatism, Christian Democracy, and the Dynamics of Transformation compares the centre-right political traditions of Britain, the Nordic countries, France, West Germany, and Austria and looks for evidence of political cooperation and influence across borders during the period 1945-90. The book explores howa variety of intellectuals, politicians, and political parties transformed their politics in response to major economic, social, and political challenges and seeks to explain why conservatives and Christian democrats came to feel that they belonged to a wider centre-right political family by the end of this period. It also examines why these political traditions found it difficult to cooperate with each other after the Second World War and why they decided to invest more political capital in inter-party relations and wider transnational projects from the 1960s. As the book shows, these developments resulted in two new centre-right internationals: the European Democrat Union and the International Democrat Union.
