        Philosophie und Lebensform

        by Julian Nida-Rümelin

        Gründe geben unserer rational und normativ verfaßten Lebensform die Struktur, deren wir als Menschen bedürfen – als Mitglieder dieser, wie Julian Nida-Rümelin sagt, »merkwürdigen Spezies, deren hinreichend entwickelte Exemplare sich in ihren Urteilen und ihrem Handeln von Gründen leiten lassen«. Welche Rolle spielt dabei die wissenschaftliche Erkenntnis? In welchem Verhältnis stehen Lebensform und Wissenschaft, Bedeutung und Intention, Ethik und Alltagspraxis, Moral und Politik? Mit diesen Fragen beschäftigen sich die hier versammelten philosophischen Abhandlungen von Nida-Rümelin, die seine pragmatistische Philosophie exemplarisch dokumentieren.

        Humanistische Reflexionen.

        by Julian Nida-Rümelin

        Ein recht verstandener Humanismus ist die Antwort auf die aktuelle Unordnung der Welt – so lautet die Zentralthese des neuen Buches von Julian Nida-Rümelin, der unter »Humanismus« weit mehr versteht als eine Geisteshaltung oder gar das angestaubte Relikt längst vergangener Zeiten. Humanismus ist vor allem eine Praxis der Menschlichkeit und damit die einzige Hoffnung auf eine friedliche, gerechte und prosperierende Weltgesellschaft der Zukunft. Damit der Humanismus seine Prägekraft zurückgewinnt, die er in einigen Phasen der Weltgeschichte hatte, muss er revitalisiert, muss er von Grund auf erneuert werden. Die Texte in diesem Band wollen dazu einen Beitrag leisten.

        The Unorthodox Imagination in Late Medieval Britain

        by Sophie Page, Julian Hoppit

        The unorthodox imagination in late medieval Britain explores how medieval people responded to images, stories, beliefs and practices which were at odds with the normative world view, from the heretical and subversive to the marvellous and exotic. The chapter by Jean-Claude Schmitt examines why some unorthodox images were viewed as provocative and threatening and explores how successfully ecclesiastical authorities contained their impact. The power of unorthodoxy to provoke wonder, scepticism or disapproval provides an opportunity to view medieval culture from fresh perspectives. The essays in this volume show that unorthodoxy was embedded in mainstream medieval culture, from stories of fairies and witches which promoted orthodox moral values to the social conformity of practitioners of ritual magic. This book provides a guide to understanding medieval unorthodoxy and the roles played by experience and imagination in medieval encounters with the unorthodox. It will be essential reading for anyone interested in the exotic, provocative and deviant in medieval culture. ;

        Democracy Into Children's Minds

        Why our future will be decided in schools

        by Julian Nida-Rümelin/Klaus Zierer

        — By two renowned authors from the fields of philosophy and education — Julian Nida-Rümelin – a popular talk show guest The debate about the correct school policy has been going on for many years. And there's no end to the bad news regarding the shortage of teachers, poor performance by students at PISA or the lack of suitable equipment in schools. What is being neglected in the discussions about the education policy but is, in fact, a central momentum in its development, is the school's task of conveying democratic values and patterns of action. This is the only way our society's supporting pillars can be strengthened in future generations. In the light of the complex situation, from the authors' point of view it is important to formulate a wake-up call: Democracy education – now!

        Race, nation and empire

        Making histories, 1750 to the present

        by Catherine Hall, Keith McClelland, Julian Hoppit

        The essays in this collection show how histories written in the past, in different political times, dealt with, considered, or avoided and disavowed Britain's imperial role and issues of difference. Ranging from enlightenment historians to the present, these essays consider both individual historians, including such key figures as E. A. Freeman, G. M. Trevelyan and Keith Hancock, and also broader themes such as the relationship between liberalism, race and historiography and how we might re-think British history in the light of trans-national, trans-imperial and cross-cultural analysis. 'Britishness' and what 'British' history is have become major cultural and political issues in our time. But as these essays demonstrate, there is no single national story: race, empire and difference have pulsed through the writing of British history. The contributors include some of the most distinguished historians writing today: C. A. Bayly, Antoinette Burton, Saul Dubow, Geoff Eley, Theodore Koditschek, Marilyn Lake, John M. MacKenzie, Karen O'Brien, Sonya O. Rose, Bill Schwarz, Kathleen Wilson. ;

        The Scottish witch-hunt in context

        by Julian Goodare

        A collection of essays on Scottish witchcraft and witch-hunting, which covers the whole period of the Scottish witch-hunt, from the mid-sixteenth century to the early eighteenth. Includes studies of particular witchcraft panics such as a reassessment of the role of King James VI. Covers a wide range of topics concerned with Scottish witch-hunting and places it in the context of other topics such as gender relations, folklore, magic and healing, and moral regulation by the church and state. Provides a comparative dimension of witch-hunting beyond Scotland - one on the global context, and one comparing Scotland with England. It is a showcase for the latest thinking on the subject and will be of interest to all scholars studying witchcraft in early modern Europe, as well as the general reader wanting to move beyond shallow and sensational accounts of a subject of compelling in. ;

        Communists constructing capitalism

        State, market, and the Party in China’s financial reform

        by Julian Gruin

        Why has China's 'transition' to a market economy not catalysed corresponding political transformation? In an era of deepening synergy between authoritarian politics and capitalist economics, this book offers a novel perspective on this central dilemma of contemporary Chinese development, shedding light on how the Chinese Communist Party achieved rapid economic growth while preserving political stability. Drawing on extensive fieldwork and over sixty interviews with policymakers, bankers and former party and state officials, the book delves into the role of China's state-owned banking system since 1989, showing how political control over capital has been central to the country's experience of capitalist development. It challenges existing state-market paradigms of political economy and reveals the Eurocentric assumptions underpinning liberal perspectives towards Chinese authoritarian resilience.

        Diario de un defensor de pibes chorros (Journal of a juvenile delinquent's defender)

        by Julian Axat

        This book chronicles Julián's journey to his role as a juvenile defender in the province of Buenos Aires, from which they sought to oust him through harassment and political trials. Others would follow the path he paved: those trained by him, officials and defenders who, witnessing his work, learned to commit to the adolescents and their heart-wrenching stories that he brought to light and presents to us again in these tales.

        Demokratie als Kooperation

        by Julian Nida-Rümelin

        Demokratie – so die zentrale These des Autors – sollte man als eine besondere Form der Kooperation verstehen. Diese These steht im Gegensatz zu einer verbreiteten Rhetorik, die in der sogenannten »Selbstbestimmung des Volkes« die Essenz einer demokratischen Ordnung sieht. Demokratie, so die hier entwickelte Gegenposition, bedarf keines kollektiven Akteurs. Die Idee einer Repräsentation des Volkswillens ist das späte Relikt feudalistischen Gottesgnadentums; sie erschwert die Entwicklung lebensfähiger föderaler Strukturen unterhalb der »nationalstaatlichen« Ebene und den Aufbau supranationaler demokratischer Institutionen. Demokratie als Kooperation steht jedoch auch in einem Gegensatz zur ökonomistischen Spielart des Pluralismus, dem zufolge Demokratie sich darauf beschränkt, bestimmte Spielregeln festzulegen, innerhalb deren Menschen ihre privaten Interessen optimieren. Die Auflösung der Bürgerschaft in konkurrierende Interessenmaximierer unterminiert die demokratische Verfassung eines Gemeinwesens. Die Suprematie des Marktes bedroht die Demokratie ebenso wie die Suprematie einzelner kollektiver Identitäten. Einem einleitenden Kapitel über politische Ethik folgen Studien zur Kooperationsproblematik in der politischen Philosophie. Hauptziel der Argumentation des Autors: Grundlage einer zivilgesellschaftlichen Konzeption von Demokratie ist ein angemessenes Verständnis von Kooperation.

        Ethische Essays

        by Julian Nida-Rümelin

        Die in diesem Band enthaltenen Essays befassen sich mit drei ethischen Themenbereichen: ethische Begründungsfragen, das Verhältnis von Rationalität und Moral und Probleme der angewandten Ethik. Nida-Rümelin vertritt eine kohärentistische Ethikkonzeption, die sich sowohl vom Utilitarismus (Konsequentialismus) absetzt als auch einen überzogenen Rationalismus deontologischer Prägung vermeidet. Dieser Band enthält auch eine ausführliche Dokumentation der aktuellen Debatte über Nida-Rümelins Thesen zu gegenwärtigen Fragen der Ethik.
