A theory of distributive justice for the European Union

This highly original book constitutes one of the first attempts to examine the problem of distributive justice in the European Union in a systematic manner. João Labareda argues that the set of shared political institutions at EU level, including the European Parliament and the Court of Justice of the EU, generate democratic duties of redistribution among EU citizens. Furthermore, the economic structure of the EU, comprising a common market, a common currency and a free-movement area, triggers duties of reciprocity among member states. The responsibilities to fulfil these duties, Labareda argues, should be shared by the local, national and supranational levels of government. Not only should the EU act as a safety net to the national welfare systems, applying the principle of subsidiarity, but common market and Eurozone regulations should balance their efficiency targets with fair cooperation terms. The concrete policy proposals presented in this book include a threshold of basic goods for all EU citizens, an EU labour code, a minimum EU corporate tax rate and an EU fund for competitiveness. Labarada argues that his proposals match the political culture of the member states, are economically feasible, can be translated into functioning institutions and policies and are consistent with the limited degree of social solidarity in Europe. This book is a major contribution to the understanding of what a just Europe would look like and what it might take to get us there. João Ubaldo Ribeiro wurde 1941 auf der Insel Itaparica, Bahia, geboren und starb am 18. Juli 2014 in Rio de Janeiro. Er ist einer der angesehensten und bekanntesten Autoren Brasiliens. Mit 17 Jahren begann er als Reporter zu arbeiten, später wurde er Chefredakteur der Zeitung Jornal de Bahia. Er studierte Politische Wissenschaften. Er war als Journalist und Hochschuldozent in Rio de Janeiro und in den USA tätig und hat als Stipendiat in Lissabon und Berlin gelebt. Seit 1991 lebte er wieder in Rio. Seinen ersten Roman schrieb Ribeiro mit 21 Jahren, Setembro não tem sentido. International bekannt wurde er 1971 durch den Roman Sargento Getúlio (dt: Sargento Getúlio 1984). Der Roman wurde in zwölf Sprachen übersetzt und erfolgreich verfilmt. 1981 erschienen die Erzählungen Livro de histórias (dt. Der Heilige, der nicht an Gott glaubte 1992), und 1984 der Roman Viva o povo brasiliero (dt. Brasilien, Brasilien 1988). Dieser Roman wird mittlerweile zu den besten und erfolgreichsten Werken der brasilianischen Literatur gezählt. 1984 erhielt der Autor, dessen Werk mehrfach mit angesehenen Preisen ausgezeichnet wurden, auch einen Preis für sein erstes Kinderbuch, Vida e paixão de Pandonar, o cruel (dt. Leben und Leidenschaften von Pandonar, dem Grausamen JAHR). Während seines einjährigen Aufenthaltes in Berlin (DAAD-Stipendium 1990/91) verfasste Ribeiro für die Frankfurter Rundschau sehr vergnügliche Kolumnen über das Leben in der nun nicht mehr geteilten Stadt, die in Ein Brasilianer in Berlin zusammengefaßt sind. Karin von Schweder-Schreiner, geboren 1943 in Posen (Polen), studierte Portugiesisch und Französisch in Mainz und Lissabon. Seit 1978 arbeitet sie – nach einer Tätigkeit als Fremdsprachenkorrespondentin – als freie Übersetzerin und erhielt zahlreiche Übersetzerpreise. Nach längeren Aufenthalten in Brasilien, Schweden, Frankreich und Portugal lebt Karin von Schweder-Schreiner heute in Hamburg.

Acting and thinking for the common good in the European Union

This book discusses the meaning of the common good in a European Union thorned by nationalist tendencies and presents concrete policies to improve its achievement. It analyses the normative relevance of EU values as a shared moral standpoint that allows highly diverse member states to label a given collective choice as 'good' or 'bad'. It discusses the role of EU institutions as both guardians and enablers of EU values in a globalised world and introduces a few proposals for institutional reform at the EU level that could strengthen this role. It also presents six strategies to improve civic friendship in the EU, in the absence of which any institutional efforts to promote the common good may be undermined by the citizens' lack of willingness to share its burdens.

Uriel Bachrach was born in Germany in 1926 and immigrated to Palestine in 1933. In 1945 he began studying chemistry at The Hebrew University in Jerusalem. At the end of 1947, future Israeli prime minister David Ben-Gurion realized that once British forces left Palestine in May 1948, seven Arab countries would attack the newly formed Jewish state that at that time was home to only 600,000 people—including women, children, and the elderly, many of them Holocaust survivors. The State had only 10,000 rifles and 3,800 pistols, no anti-tank weapons, and no artillery. Weapons could not be purchased from other countries due to an embargo, so Ben-Gurion decided to produce weapons locally. On February 2, 1948, Bachrach was summoned to a secret meeting where he and twenty chemistry and physics students were told to save the nation. For three weeks they studied the secrets of explosives, incendiaries, gas, and smoke. Gradually more young scientists joined the group and on March 17, 1948, an IDF Science Corps named HEMED was formed. In 1949, Bachrach returned to The Hebrew University and became the chairman of the Department of Molecular Biology. He has been a visiting professor at various American and European universities and was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Bologna in Italy. The Hebrew version of this book was published in 2009 and the author received a special prize for the State of Israel from President Shimon Peres. Uriel Bachrach continues to lecture in various forums about this unique chapter in Israel's history. An English-language eBook edition was published in early 2016 by Samuel Wachtman's Sons, Inc., CA. 256 pages, 15X22.5 cm

Her most known books are "Every Individual – A King, the Political and Social Thought of Zeev Jabotinsky" (Dvir, Tel Aviv and Bnai Brith, New York). For this book she got The Jabotinsky Price. Her second known book is "The Lure of Happiness" (Carmel, Jerusalem). She was the director at the Van Leer Foundation (1977-1980) and an advisor on social and welfare policy to the Israel prime ministers Yitzhak Rabin, Yitzhak Shamir and Shimon Peres. From 1990-1992 she began taking care of street cats who constituted a community in her garden. This book is based on 14 years of observation. She continues to take care of street cats and is about to write a second book on this subject. Ende 1947 erkannte der zukünftige israelische Ministerpräsident David Ben-Gurion, dass sobald die britischen Streitkräfte im Mai 1948 Palästina verließen sieben arabische Länder den neu gebildeten jüdischen Staat angreifen würden, in dem zu diesem Zeitpunkt nur 600.000 Menschen lebten – einschließlich Frauen und Kindern und älteren Menschen, darunter viele Überlebende des Holocaust. Der Staat hatte nur 10.000 Gewehre und 3.800 Pistolen, keine Panzerabwehrwaffen und keine Artillerie. Waffen konnten aufgrund eines Embargos nicht aus dem Ausland gekauft werden, daher beschloss Ben-Gurion, Waffen vor Ort zu produzieren. Am 2. Die hebräische Version dieses Buches wurde 2009 veröffentlicht und der Autor erhielt von Präsident Shimon Peres einen Sonderpreis für den Staat Israel. Uriel Bachrach hält in verschiedenen Foren Vorträge über dieses einzigartige Kapitel in der Geschichte Israels.
