Elite Jewish women in nineteenth-century France

Herminie and Fanny Pereire were sisters-in-law, married to the eminent Jewish bankers and Saint-Simonian socialists Emile and Isaac. They were also mother and daughter. This book, a companion to the author's acclaimed Emile and Isaac Pereire (2015), sheds new light on elite Jewish families in nineteenth-century France. Drawing on the family archives, it traces the Pereires across a century of major social and political change, from the Napoleonic period to the cusp of the First World War, revealing the active role they played as bourgeois women both within and outside the family. It offers insights into Jewish assimilation, embourgeoisement and gender relations, through the lens of one of the most fascinating families of the century.

Noam Chomskys Buch »Reflexionen über die Sprache« (= stw 185) stellt eine Zusammenfassung der sprachphilosophischen Kontroverse zwischen Empirismus und Rationalismus und zwischen Semantik und Pragmatik dar. Es präsentiert aber auch einen neuen Entwicklungsstand in der Kontroverse darum, ob die Syntax unabhängig von der Semantik operieren kann. Chomsky führt in diesem Buch die bereits 1973 in den »Conditions of Transformation« entwickelte Spurentheorie ein und motiviert diese sowohl aus empirischen Gründen der Sprachbeschreibung als auch mit kognitiven Argumenten sowie mit Beobachtungen aus dem Prozeß des Spracherwerbs. Diese Theorie stellt eine starke Revision der bekannten Annahmen Chomskys dar. In den »Reflexionen über die Sprache« liefert Chomsky sozusagen »nur« den konzeptuellen Rahmen der neuen Spurentheorie. Helen Leuningers Arbeit diskutiert nun die methodologischen und empirischen Fragen, die sich aus dieser neuen Theorie ergeben, und stellt sie in den forschungs- und wissenschaftsgeschichtlichen Zusammenhang, aus dem sie entstanden sind.

Der gekreuzigte Teufel wurde von Ngũgĩ heimlich im Gefängnis - er wurde wegen eines Theaterstücks in Gĩkũyũ verhaftet, aber nie vor Gericht gestellt - auf Toilettenpapier niedergeschrieben. Erst kurz vor seiner Entlassung wurde das Manuskript entdeckt und beschlagnahmt, ihm jedoch wieder zurückgegeben. Die Publikation dieses Romans auf Gĩkũyũ war ein (nicht nur literarisches) Ereignis. Wariinga verläßt aufgrund einer verzweifelten Situation Nairobi und will in ihrem Heimatdorf Ilmorog Zuflucht suchen. Sie fährt mit einem Matatu-Taxi zu einer Einladung - einer Einladung zu einem Fest der Diebe, das vom Teufel organisiert wird. Diese Diebe (lokale und ausländische Geschäftsleute) veranstalten einen Wettkampf in der Prahlerei damit, wie sie reich wurden. Durch dieses Feiern von Korruption in all ihren Formen wird Wariinga zu der Einsicht gebracht, daß ihr Leben nichts anderes war als die Duldung von Korruption. Ngũgĩ kehrt in Der gekreuzigte Teufel den westlichen Symbolismus um. Er konfrontiert Illusion und Wirklichkeit, Träume und harte Tatsachen. Die Erzählung verwendet die alten Rhythmen des traditionellen Geschichtenerzählens als Gegengewicht zum Schreibstil. Aus dieser Verbindung des Alten mit dem Neuen ergibt sich ein leidenschaftliches Plädoyer für die politische, wirtschaftliche und kulturelle Unabhängigkeit des kenianischen Volkes.
