Niemand wird in diesen Tagebüchern so häufig erwähnt wie der Bruder James, und so enthalten sie wichtige Aufschlüsse über die Jahre, in denen dieser an »Kammermusik«, »Stephen der Held«, »Ein Porträt des Künstlers als junger Mann« arbeitete. Wieviel Wirklichkeit in die Werke von James eingegangen ist, wird erst sichtbar durch die zahlreichen Anmerkungen, die der Übersetzer Arno Schmidt für den deutschen Leser beigesteuert hat.
